00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio on the day that the legendary fashion designer Tom Ford sees his
00:38second film screened here in the UK.
00:41It's called Nocturnal Animals and it's based on the book Tony and Susan.
00:45It's not about animals staying up all night.
00:48It's rather a thriller.
00:50But it reminds me of the days when I was a youngster when I would stay up all night.
00:54I was a nocturnal animal and my mother would say you're turning day into night.
00:58And I did because there were great parties in those days.
01:01We're talking about the swinging 60s.
01:03And if I actually did go to bed over a weekend, it was obviously a dull weekend.
01:08What about you?
01:09You're a party goer.
01:10Are you an all nighter?
01:11I'm just a night owl.
01:13Yeah.
01:13I think the last time we did a proper all nighter was in Brazil because we were in the Rio
01:17Carnival.
01:18And we were the last school going down the Sambodrome.
01:21So we were supposed to get out there about two o'clock I think it was.
01:25And it was about five by the time we made it on there.
01:28So it was dawn by the time we were finished.
01:30But that was fun.
01:31Quite right too.
01:31It would be a shame to go to bed during Mardi Gras.
01:34My word, that would be a silly thing to do.
01:36Now, Rachel, we've got Rick Anstey back with us.
01:39Account manager from Aylesbury.
01:40Who's won five games.
01:42Heading for a sixth.
01:43Well done.
01:44And you're joined by Jamie Hogg, a trainee financial advisor from Wilmslow in Cheshire.
01:49Big scuba diver.
01:51You've been to Gozo, which is the little island hanging on to Malta, I think.
01:55It certainly is, yeah.
01:56It's good?
01:57Clear waters.
01:58Plenty of fish.
01:59They've got some quite interesting routes that you can dive through.
02:02Okay.
02:02Through walls and stuff.
02:03Excellent stuff.
02:04And you also, like all young men of your age, did a bungee jump while visiting South Africa.
02:10What is it about, you know, terrorising yourself?
02:13I don't know, really.
02:14Just an adrenaline kick?
02:16Yeah, I think when you're asked, you can't say no.
02:18My son went to Australia.
02:19He actually was sort of in a catapult.
02:22So they wound the thing down from two posts.
02:25He used a lot of bad language just before they cut the road.
02:30Anyway, you're very welcome here in the Countdown studio.
02:33Good luck to you both, Jamie and Rick Anstey.
02:40Please welcome to the Dictionary Corner, of course, Susie Dent.
02:44And it's his last day before he heads off to get ready for Beauty and the Beast in Western
02:49Supermare, playing his first ever panto goodie role after many years of playing the panto baddie.
02:55It's actor and writer John Chalice.
02:59Thank you very much.
03:00Good to see you.
03:02All right.
03:03Now let's get down to business on this Friday.

04:34Brilliant.
04:35Very good.

13:05cheers
13:06all right
13:10so 31 plays 28 as we turn to John and John you've been in the acting profession
13:16for quite some time now and inevitably you've met some fascinating people anybody in particular good
13:23stories from famous people that we'd all wish we had met
13:27yes I suppose years and years ago the end of the 60s I I met the Beatles oh well can
13:34you believe it
13:35well three of them actually George Harrison wasn't there but the other three were and they were doing the magical
13:40mystery tour
13:42there was one part they couldn't cast so my agent just had a hunch we might get on and
13:47sent me up to see them and I was pretty nervous as you can imagine because they were
13:51right at the height of their fame about 1968 something like that and
13:56anyway I thought I took a deep breath I thought well I've got to go for this and
13:59I went in and the first thing I said was I thought there were four of you
14:03and John Lennon said well no George is just a cardboard cutout we sacked him years ago
14:10so I thought well yes anyway then we started talking about the goon show
14:14yeah which John John Lennon was a great fan of as I was you know so we swapped a
14:20few silly voices you know what I mean and so we seem to be getting on
14:25pretty well and and eventually he said by the way John have you got a favorite Beatles tune
14:34and then I said something which still haunts me to this day really actually I prefer the Rolling Stones
14:43exactly and I'm waiting to be shown the door and so on with apologies so on but there was a
14:49long
14:49pause and Lennon eventually said actually I think you're right I prefer them sometimes too
14:55the true story and uh and he said anyway look we start we start next week you know and we're
15:01going
15:01on this culture we don't know what we're doing we haven't got a script or anything like that you
15:05know but I hope you're good at making up words and uh I got the job anyway eventually the upshot
15:12was
15:12I couldn't do it because I was unavailable because I'd already said yes to my first telly part in
15:16the newcomers and the dates clash by two days so I never did it oh what a shame isn't that
15:22an awful
15:23end of the story yeah yeah of course I never saw him again but uh at least I met him
15:28anyway no one
15:29three of them you didn't meet the stones ever then yes I met some stones um actually I was uh
15:35I was
15:35doing my own record which was uh which is best not mentioned it was a terrible uh we're recording
15:41Olympic Studios in Barnes and we're sitting there trying to get this uh this song down and uh
15:46suddenly the door flings open and uh Mick Jagger walks in and says has anybody got a tambourine
15:54and I went uh no no I've actually never known but I thought it's Mick Jagger god and I sort
16:02of
16:02practically collapsed really and anyway so anyway we'll find one somewhere and and off he went and
16:08um and of course they're recording something the stones and um so I've followed him ever since
16:12I've seen him seen him at American football stadiums and and everything since then yeah I think the
16:17stones are magnificent uh oh excellent groundbreaking all right thank you John wonderful great stories

19:37Rooting through the undergrowth.
19:39Anybody else, Susie?
19:41Outroll.
19:42A slightly rare word here, but it's the action or act of rolling out something.
19:48That could be perhaps dough on your counter.
19:51Yes.
19:52Making an outroll, but as I say, quite rare.
19:54So it's a cheeky seven.

21:56I left you with a clue.
21:56Gets paid monthly, and he's definitely worth his salt.
22:01And the answer is salaried.
22:03Salaried, because salt originally...
22:06Originally denoted the allowance of salt that was paid to Roman soldiers.
22:11Sometimes that was their only pay.
22:12It was very valuable.
22:13It was the preservative.
22:15Incredibly useful salt.
22:17So, yes.
22:18And that was...
22:18Allowance of salt.
22:20All right.
22:2144 apiece.
22:22Jamie, your letters game now.

22:59And a consonant.
23:00And a consonant.
23:16And a consonant.
23:17And a consonant.
23:18And a consonant.
23:18And a consonant.
23:29A six. A six. Rick? Just a six.
23:32Jamie? Frowns.
23:34And both of you?
23:36Yeah. Two frowners
23:38here. How about John?
23:40We've got six swines
23:42or seven
23:43worsens. Yeah.
23:45And slightly nicer than
23:47worsens is snowier. A snowier
23:49landscape. Snowier
23:51indeed. Yes. Fifty piece
23:53neck and neck and it's Rick's
23:55letters game now. Rick? A consonant please.
23:57Thank you, Rick. G.
23:59And another.

24:27A consonant.
24:51And now, we can see the
24:56now then Rick seven seven and Jamie's try seven not written down all right and
25:05Jamie green reading reading all right grained absolutely fine we have that too
25:12yeah that's a good seven yeah yeah and they say John injured yes there is Nate
25:18actually Nick ad during a DJ uri ng and it comes from the verb adieu which is to
25:24urge or request somebody to do something most earnestly thank you all right so
25:33it's 57 apiece and we're back with Suzy and her origins of words Suzy well I've
25:40mentioned before Nick the idea of the evil eye because it informs so many words
25:44and phrases in English fascinate for example to fascinate somebody was
25:48originally to cast a spell on them to enchant them and enchant has the idea of
25:54singing a song that casts a spell it's linked to chanson and chante in French
25:57to sing and the ancient Egyptians unsurprisingly were well aware of this
26:02so they thought that the evil eye could actually make magic enter somebody's
26:07body through their mouth so they would wear special makeup on their lips to
26:11prevent this happenings is what they thought they would prevent and so this
26:14idea of enchantment and and magic and not always good magic as I say has has
26:19informed English for a very long time and it's actually behind a much more modern
26:22phrase as well which is whammy we often talk about a double whammy whammy has
26:27got the sense of of hitting somebody at this time with it with an even literally
26:31an evil intent if you like and double whammy is probably most associated with a
26:37comic strip called lil abner in the 1950s and there was a character in there
26:42called evil eye fleagle who could literally cast a withering look at his
26:48victims and and crush them and there's a wonderful quote from lil abner which I was
26:53going to ask John to read because he's got a much better American accent than than I do
26:57but this will show you what a single whammy is and a double whammy
27:01evil eye fleagle is the name and a whammy is my game mother nature endowed me with eyes which can
27:10putrefy citizens on the spot there is the single whammy that friend is the full pure power of one of
27:18my evil
27:18eyes it's dynamite it's dynamite friend I do not throw it around lightly and lastly the double whammy
27:28namely the full power of both eyes which I hopes I never have to use
27:44and that's a great accent it's good that's a great great act thanks very much 57 points apiece
