'A PERSONAL DECISION TO PRESERVE INDEPENDENCE'

Former law school dean Ralph Sarmiento, who was supposed to testify as a defense witness, released an official statement explaining his withdrawal from Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, which is set to resume next week, Nov. 9.

In his video statement on Nov. 5, Sarmiento thanked the defense team for recognizing the value of his constitutional and legal views, adding that he never expected these views to potentially become part of the impeachment trial.

However, Sarmiento clarified that his decision to withdraw was rooted in personal reasons, particularly his desire to preserve the independence of his constitutional law scholarship and the impartiality of his legal views and opinions. (Video courtesy of Dean Ralph Sarmiento)
