The City of Palmerston Council has launched a bid to include new developments in Holtze and East Arm as part of the satellite city's boundaries. The move has drawn opposition from the neighbouring Litchfield Council but Palmerston's Mayor says it makes sense as the areas "identify more" with Palmerston than the rural area.

00:02The mayor of most of the Darwin rural area pushing back against Palmerston's efforts
00:07to take some of its land and thousands of future ratepayers.
00:11I wouldn't want to live in Palmerston and if I had purchased a block off the plan and
00:20it was planned for Litchfield I'd be really proud of that and then if then the title settled
00:25and I found out it was in Palmerston I would be ropeable.
00:31The city of Palmerston has made a submission to the NT government to expand its boundaries.
00:36Under the proposal the industrial complex at East Arm and a new residential development
00:42in Holtz would become part of Darwin's satellite city.
00:45Its mayor Athena Pascoe-Ball says this makes sense as East Arm provides employment to Palmerston
00:51residents and ratepayers in Holtz will use Palmerston's facilities.
00:56The population out there is likely to rely on services and opportunities in the city
01:01of Palmerston and probably will identify more of the city of Palmerston than any of the other
01:06centres in Litchfield.
01:08Litchfield's Rachel Wright says even if all that changed was the council the impact on
01:13Holtz residents would be major.
01:14Where you live is a really important part of your life and your identity and the people
01:21that live in Litchfield are really proud.
01:23But Ms Pascoe-Ball says the new developments will be more like Palmerston than Litchfield.
01:28They are 350-450 square metre subdivisions very similar to what you already see in Palmerston so
01:37it isn't really a rural field.
01:39The submission is being reviewed and local government minister Steve Edgington is expected to
01:44make a decision next year.
