00:02Almost two years since floodwaters swept through this North Queensland community,
00:08Michelle Yates is still trying to rebuild her Ingham home.
00:13Another wet season looms, bringing with it a new challenge.
00:17As of today we have no insurance.
00:19Her provider wouldn't renew the policy due to ongoing flood risk
00:24and she's yet to find an affordable alternative.
00:27We've looked into insurance and one company want $28,000 for the year just to insure us.
00:35I don't know how that's possible.
00:37So we are seeing quite common, some quotes coming in $10,000, $15,000 even $20,000 in those high
00:45flood risk areas.
00:46Matthew Porter's home suffered minor flood damage last year.
00:50His premiums soared by 72% at renewal.
00:54To our shock it was on the cheaper end out of everything else.
00:59The Insurance Council of Australia says cover is available in Ingham but premiums will reflect the flood risk.
01:06It says anyone with a non-renewal notice or a large premium increase should ask for an explanation or shop
01:14around.
01:14Council data shows most Ingham households maintain some form of insurance but the majority of those surveyed are struggling to
01:24afford the premiums.
01:26It's something that we are asking the government to look at closely.
01:30There obviously has been market failure.
01:32It's something that we are asking for.
