00:01Senator Matt Canavan, this decision from him today was widely expected but today of course
00:07he made it official saying that his goal is to get rid of net zero and to do that in
00:13his words
00:13there needs to be a change of government so he's putting in his words again everything on the line
00:19to try and make that happen. He made this announcement this morning alongside current
00:24Capricornia MP Michelle Landry who of course announced her retirement late last month. Now
00:31Matt Canavan says that his fight will be of course to scrap net zero. He wants to see Australia
00:39shift in direction and here's a little bit more about what he had to say about the fight ahead.
00:46I want to see Angus Taylor elected the next Prime Minister of Australia because he has solutions
00:51to do all those things. We as a team we'll cut taxes, we will scrap net zero and we will
00:56cut
00:57migration by the biggest amount in Australian history all to make living standards better for
01:02the Australian people. That's what I'm passionate about doing now so I'm happy to put my political
01:06future on the line to deliver that to take our country back. I might, who knows, I might not be
01:12successful. My political career may die but I'm not going to die wondering. Fighting words from
01:18Nationals leader and Senator Matt Canavan there. Opposition leader Angus Taylor weighed in to this
01:24announcement from Senator Canavan today saying that Matt is a valued colleague and also he'd love
01:31to see him in the lower house. We also heard from Liberal frontbencher Andrew Hastie on afternoon
01:37briefing a short time ago. He's just a great advocate for this country. He wants to return
01:42it to prosperity. He wants workers in that part of Queensland to have security for their jobs.
01:49He talks a lot about sovereign capability, heavy industry. These questions are really near and dear
01:54to a lot of people's hearts and that's why I think he's the right guy to take on One Nation.
01:58Andrew Hastie there. Lexi, what has the broader political reaction been?
02:04Well ahead of Matt Canavan's announcement today, we heard from One Nation party director James Ashby
02:11who indicated that he could be considering a tilt at Capricornia. Shortly after the announcement
02:18from Senator Canavan, James Ashby officially ruled out a run at Capricornia along with One Nation
02:24leader Pauline Hanson. Now James Ashby said that it doesn't mean that One Nation isn't getting ready
02:31to fight for this seat. He said that they'll be throwing a ton of resources at this particular
02:37election campaign. We also heard some reaction today from the government, Jade. Labor frontbencher
02:43Murray Watt said that he wished Matt Canavan all the best but that Senator Canavan's constituents
02:51need to know what they're getting. In Murray Watt's eyes, he pointed out that Senator Canavan
02:57and also One Nation had had similar opposition to government legislation in the Senate on wages and
03:05also health policy. Here's Murray Watt a little earlier today. Matt Canavan is currently number two
03:12on the Senate ticket for the LNP in Queensland and with their dire polling as it stands now,
03:17he would have lost that Senate spot. So I can understand why he wants to try and remain in
03:22parliament and his only way to do that is to remember the seat of Capricornia. Best wishes to him.
03:27Labor frontbencher Murray Watt there, Jade. And of course, the next federal election,
03:32it's widely expected to happen in 2028, could come as early as August next year. But of course,
03:41the battle lines clearly starting already to be drawn.
03:44A lot of criminal justice, caseima.
03:44I'm on theinals.
03:45My favorite security of the law is about the law and that's where he is.
03:45I'm on the law.
03:45A lot of criminal justice.
