SA shadow health minister set to be the leader of the state’s Liberal Party

Shadow Health Minister Ashton Hurn is firming as the next leader of the South Australian Liberal Party. While the moderate frontbencher is yet to declare her intentions, she's got the backing of her colleagues to take over from Vincent Tarzia.

00:21I think Ashton Hearn would be an excellent leader if she decides to put her hand up.

00:26The Barossa MP didn't front the cameras today but told the ABC she was continuing to have

00:31conversations with colleagues. One of those colleagues is already seeking a promotion.

00:35New Liberal recruit Frank Pangelo says he's inquired about running for deputy leader.

00:39Did you seek advice on whether you could run for that position?

00:42Deputy leadership? Yes I did. Unfortunately I can't.

00:47The position already occupied by Josh Teague who says he's not going anywhere. But Mr Pangelo

00:52is still keen on a move to the front bench.

00:55I'm not in there just to sit on the back bench and twiddle my thumbs.

00:59If Ashton Hearn takes the leadership she'll have just 103 days to campaign for the election.

01:05Some Liberal sources are confident she can sell the party's message better than her predecessor.

01:10But it's not clear how much that'll narrow Labor's commanding lead in the polls.

01:15We don't beat around the bush when we know that this is a hard ask to change leaders so close

01:22to an election. I've seen teams in footy come from 10 goals down in the last quarter and

01:26win a game. Don't write off the Liberal Party.
