Details of a report expected to recommend that the Nationals dump its support for net zero emissions by 2050 will be presented to the party on Monday. But the review has not undertaken economic modelling of the costs of doing so. Nationals Deputy Leader Matt Canavan led the review with his Senate colleague Ross Cadell.

00:00He's basically been conducting a deep dive into the merits of the coalition's net zero
00:08policy which as we know has been a deeply contentious policy issue for the opposition
00:13for some time now. So he says that he'll take parts of this review to his party room colleagues
00:20this week. There's no guarantee that it'll essentially be backed in. He might find that
00:25he's got more work to do. One of his key issues is around the cost of net zero. This is something
00:31that he brings up time and time again and he did tell ABC insiders as well that he hasn't yet
00:38conducted any I guess modelling into the economics of this policy but that's something that he'd like
00:45to see happen here. As we know when it comes to net zero it has been politically contentious. So the
00:53nationals did briefly walk away from their senior coalition partner the Liberals after the May
00:59election this year. They did get back together but it does I guess stand or loom as another potential
01:07pressure point as we do see detractors within both the Liberal Party and the nationals arcing up over
01:14the future of this policy and would actually like it scrapped. We also heard from Matt Canavan today
01:21backing in his nationals colleague Barnaby Joyce. So we'll remember last week Barnaby Joyce said that
01:28he was having issues if you like with the nationals leadership and said that he wouldn't recontest his
01:35New South Wales seat of New England at the next election and that has fuelled speculation that he
01:41might actually jump ship if you like and move to One Nation. Matt Canavan this morning was asked whether
01:48he'd like to see Barnaby Joyce in those nationals party room meetings this week and this is what he had
01:53to say.
01:54He's a great mate and you know I think he's a great Australian. Been an impactful statesman on the
02:00political stage for some time. I hope we do keep him in the nationals party. Look I can't speak for the
02:04party room David but you know I certainly hope he comes along. You know it's unfortunate when people
02:11don't you know feel like they're part of the team and loved and you know I know lots of people have
02:16reached out to him in the last few weeks and as I say I'd love to keep him part of the team.
