The Dolphins analyst joins Joe Rose to share his thoughts on a strong effort against the Patriots yesterday
Transcript
00:00I mean, Ollie's a competitor and he cares about the game a lot.
00:03And I was just letting him know that in that situation, that he's dead ass wrong.
00:07I mean, that's the honest truth.
00:09And it's not, it would be wrong if I didn't, you know, tell him the truth.
00:13If I'd be like, oh, it's okay, you were just trying to compete.
00:15Like, no, we went from third and four to third and like 15 or 20 and we did not convert.
00:20And that was one of those stalled drives that I'm talking about.
00:23That's something that we can control and that is, you know, wrong.
00:26And I finished it by telling him I'm on his side, I'm with him and we're teammates
00:29and we're in this together and he's going to go out and help us win this game
00:33and we're going to fight the next play and he's going to go back out there.
00:36But at the same time, I got to tell you, you're dead wrong when you're dead wrong.
00:39Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis there.
00:42Let's head out to the Toyota of Hollywood hotline shop over 2,000.
00:44Toyota's on sale, one location, Toyota of Hollywood on 441.
00:47We're going to Hollywood and share it in toyotafollywood.com.
00:50That was unbelievable.
00:54So good the way Malik Willis handled that with Ollie Gordon.
00:58And, you know, we always get on one guy or the other and YZ saying something
01:03or you can't let the guy know.
01:04I thought as a leader of that team, that was handled so well.
01:08Kyle Krabs, host of Locked on Dolphins and A to Z Sports NFL analyst, joins us.
01:13I thought Malik, man, you talk about no controversy, just right to it.
01:18I love him.
01:19We need him.
01:20But you can't do that.
01:21It was nicely done.
01:23Yeah.
01:24Kind of matter of fact, right?
01:25It kind of matches what, you know, Jeff Halfley has been a lot of the times.
01:28And he said that in the postgame, too.
01:30He said good leadership is telling the truth and having direct conversations with people
01:35with what they need to hear, right?
01:37So I appreciated how that was handled as well.
01:40I think Ollie in the locker room after I know Chris Perkins had posted a clip of what Ollie
01:45said after the game.
01:46And he was very matter of fact about it, too.
01:48He's like, you know, I just got to keep my mouth shut.
01:51And, you know, I think as long as we don't continue to have this become a pattern, then
01:57this can be a valuable learning lesson.
01:59And unfortunately, it came at the expense of what's probably going to be a whole bunch
02:02of learning lessons for the Dolphins on the heels of this game.
02:04Yes, you're right.
02:05And we'll get into all of them.
02:07But, you know, it's so when he loses it, it doesn't it the fire doesn't go out real
02:14quickly because we got to see not only on the field from the coach.
02:19And then I think the assistant coach is with him.
02:22And then some of the players, he didn't want to hear it from anybody.
02:26He was like, he was like, and you know, he's going to cool off and he comes goes back in
02:31and runs hard.
02:32Man, I don't want the guy to change anything except the STFU.
02:37Just play, man.
02:38Just, just play.
02:39And because he's been so good.
02:41He's been a great story.
02:42Speaking of that, we haven't talked much about this, but Malik Willis.
02:47I thought he played really, really well in the first half under the circumstances of
02:53getting sacked.
02:54And by the way, I see people going, wow, no, those, those are on Malik.
02:58And I'm going, some of those sacks up the middle are not on Malik.
03:01He had no shot.
03:03Yeah.
03:03It's, you know, there's probably two in retrospect that maybe you could throw the ball away and
03:09minimize a loss.
03:10But, you know, uh, true media had the numbers up after the game and three of those sacks
03:15that he took, the pressure was arriving in, in 2.8 seconds or less.
03:19So like that's getting the ball and getting to the top of your drop and some quick pressures
03:24where guys are running through the, you know, the fastest, you know, sacks and pressures
03:28in the league are about two and a half seconds.
03:29So it's, it's happening very quickly.
03:31And he took some bad L's up front.
03:33Um, I think you certainly missed Caden Proctor in this game.
03:36Oh yeah.
03:37I think Jonas Savanaya played anywhere close to the standard that he had set for himself
03:41throughout the other games that he's played this season.
03:44Uh, so things just kind of compounded on you there from that regard.
03:47And I give him credit for finding something to work with offensively.
03:51And it was obviously was not enough and it was not consistent enough across 60 minutes.
03:56But the way that they were getting pressure on the quarterback in the first quarter, I said,
03:59holy smokes, and then you're not running the ball either.
04:01So, so you're really worried about what it's going to end up looking like.
04:04So I thought they hung in there.
04:06They, they had some nice things to take away from, from an effort that wasn't good enough
04:10to win the football game.
04:12And, um, yeah, I agree.
04:14You know, the, they, the New England kind of smoked you up front.
04:17And I think that was one of the discouraging things out of this game for the Dolphins to
04:21have to try to address.
04:22Let me ask you, what'd you think?
04:23He did some pretty creative things to try to get pressure on Drake May and some of them worked.
04:28I mean, we, we got some pressures and we got some sacks from the guys on the outside.
04:33Chop got two of them.
04:34Oche got one on, Oche got one on the other side.
04:37It was, uh, was nice.
04:39But at times though, still all day to throw.
04:43If you don't get creative and New England made some nice adjustments in the second half
04:48to give him more time.
04:49Yeah.
04:50And then you had a couple opportunities to get them on the ground too.
04:53Chris Johnson off the edge and didn't finish that one.
04:56And that one touchdown pass, Chop Robinson has a chance to get them on the outside of
04:59the pocket and you can't quite finish him.
05:01Now he's great.
05:02That's a big quarterback, right?
05:03Yeah.
05:04Big, big athletic quarterback on the edge.
05:06So, you know, those guys get paid too.
05:08They make some plays, but you know, that, that, that last one for Chop really hurt because
05:12of how good he was early.
05:13And then that turns into an explosive play touchdown when he gets outside the pocket.
05:18So, um, if you're not going to have consistent waves of organic form and pressure up front,
05:25the, the opportunities that you do have, you really need to make them count.
05:29And, uh, if I remember correctly, the Chris Johnson one ended up, I think that was on the
05:34possession where they missed the field goal.
05:36So it ended up be like, they bailed you out with a missed kick.
05:38Right.
05:38Uh, but then the other one in the second half with Chop, you know, that, that goes for
05:41a touchdown.
05:42So, uh, you, it's kind of the whole team, right?
05:46Like you, you're only going to have so many opportunities and you got to take advantage
05:49of the ones that you have.
05:50And if you don't, you just kind of look up and you hope that it doesn't come back and
05:54get you in the end.
05:55And, and those, that, that element of the game kind of, it came back and got you when
05:58it was all said and done.
05:59You know, the one with, uh, with, uh, Johnson, you're talking about Chris Johnson, he looked
06:03like he thought he was going to step up.
06:05Like he was in, he, he had already made up his mind it cause he, he tried to tackle him
06:10like the front.
06:11He almost like whiffed on him from the front there in the middle.
06:14And like, he wasn't sure where to hit him, but I mean, he had him square, he had him square
06:19and it, uh, you know, obviously to your point, it was a great opportunity.
06:23The other one is a fourth down.
06:25I thought they got to stop.
06:27I didn't even think it was close.
06:28Listen, and, and, uh, to see it get overturned, I, I, uh, again, I, I don't know what it looked
06:34like on TV to you, but, uh, that surprised me.
06:37Did you, do you like the mark in that or not?
06:39Um, you know, listen, it's not the reason they lost the game, but I certainly would like
06:43to think that reviews and overturned calls would come in the face of inconclusive evidence.
06:50And I didn't think I saw anything that was inconclusive evidence on the TV replay, but
06:54that, that was just me.
06:56And you know, it is what it is and you gotta pick it up and go to the next play
06:59and, and
07:00yeah, no, no, no.
07:01That's not why you lost, you know, but yeah, I, yeah, I was kind of the same boat as you
07:04know, I was, I watched a replay and I'm like, I don't think they have enough to overturn
07:07it.
07:07And then we came back from a commercial break and New England's offense was on the field
07:10and we're like, Oh, I guess they overturned it.
07:12So there you go.
07:12And they didn't waste any time on it.
07:14I mean, that, that thing didn't take three and a half minutes to get done.
07:16They, they were all over.
07:17I think one of the stories is, I think you hit on, I thought we got beat up a little
07:21bit on both sides of the football, to be honest.
07:23Don't you up sides?
07:25I know the offensive line did not look anything like the jets.
07:28And I think, as you said, Caden Proctor, and I want to talk about Caden Proctor for a second.
07:33I had an interesting talk with Jermon Bushrod, who does the, the pre and post game sometime
07:38for us.
07:39And it was a hell of a player for a long, long time.
07:41We were talking.
07:43He he's big on like Joe Caden Proctor at three 53 60.
07:47I'm leaving them right there.
07:48I don't want to move him.
07:49Go find another tackle.
07:50If it's not Austin Jackson next year.
07:53And I thought it was really interesting because I, he's getting better and better.
07:57He goes, man, Joe, he is, uh, he didn't get pushed around at all.
08:00And he's only getting better and better between Brewer and Paul.
08:04Um, how do you feel about that?
08:06And he wondered how much he struggled against the fast guys on the outside at tackle.
08:10Well, what do you think?
08:12Oh, you're watching some of these guards across the NFL get 25, $26 million now.
08:17So it's not like it's, it's not like those guys aren't valuable, you know, the last 10
08:22years or so last five years or so that that position has been amongst the leaders as far
08:26as the acceleration for the top of their respective market.
08:28So guards had become a much bigger thing.
08:31And I think with kind of the way that the league cycles through that's, that's probably
08:35a trend that's going to continue for a bit.
08:37If he's good there, like I I'm all for finding like needle moving pro bowl caliber players
08:43at any spot.
08:44I really don't care where, what position they play.
08:46You know, the, the best Fred Warner's an off ball linebacker.
08:49He's an elite player.
08:50Uh, Kyle Hamilton's an elite safety.
08:52Those, those elite players, if you can find him and that's a good, you've seen the flashes
08:56of what maybe if Caden continues to develop, you hope he can be that caliber of a player
09:00at his respective position.
09:01If that's what fate has for him, great.
09:04I think with Caden right now, it at least gives you flexibility to, to not go into the
09:10off season and say, we have to get this one thing, or we have to overpay a free agency
09:14to get an average player and pay a top end of market money.
09:17That's true.
09:18Or we have to use our first round pick on this position.
09:20You can just kind of let it come to you.
09:23And as you let it come to you, if something happens and you get an investment opportunity
09:29to sign a tackle or to draft a tackle or to sign a guard or draft a guard, like you
09:33can kind of just let the chips fall where they will and find the value of it.
09:37So I think the fact that he's capable of doing both should take some of the pressure
09:40off to feel like you have to overextend yourself and make a, a over-invest in somebody
09:47that that's maybe their caliber of play is not worth what you'd be investing in with.
09:51Um, I hate to do this today, but special teams, I, we had, we had a, a decent return
09:58yesterday, uh, right.
09:59Had one nice return, but again, they start their first drive at the 50.
10:06Now they only get a field goal out of it, but it's like, this is just not acceptable.
10:11And I just can't let it be acceptable because, well, it's all, you know, again, the Joe, this
10:16is all part of the young development.
10:17They get a 26 yard return.
10:20I want to say to the 50.
10:22So you're putting, uh, a guy that's been on fire for more than a month now, a quarterback.
10:27Uh, I don't care how many weapons he's missing at the, at the 50.
10:31Uh, and now later on, I know we had some good coverage.
10:34I don't want to forget about that.
10:35Katron Allen did a great job of right.
10:37As the guys catching it, a big pop on him, but, and the hold that backs you up after a
10:43kick, it's just until that, that it looked like he might've had a chance to try to feel
10:48that with a foot out of bounds.
10:49And that would have, would have been an illegal kick out of bounds.
10:52That could have been, you could have just automatically started the 40 yard line.
10:55Cause that was right along the side.
10:56That's right.
10:57So he, he, it bounces and then you play it and then it prompts the hold.
11:03So not only did you get a hold and you get backed up and you start at your 12 cause
11:07the
11:07holds enforced at the 22, but could you have played it where it is out of bounds and it's
11:13an illegal kickoff?
11:14And that's, that's 28 yard difference while you're trying to weather the storm of what
11:18New England is doing coming out of half.
11:20It's a huge deal.
11:20I always wondered if the guys know that rule because I remember the first time that popped
11:25up, I was looking and, uh, the guy's gone.
11:28That was a brilliant play, you know, to get, get, uh, get the foot out of bounds.
11:31So I, uh, again, you know, I'm sure they know that.
11:34And I'm not sitting here dogpying that, you know, the, the bigger picture, everything's
11:38got to go right.
11:39And one area of the team's got to dominate for them to have a chance to win like they
11:44did against the jets.
11:45Would you agree with that?
11:46Yeah, I think so.
11:47I think they need to play.
11:48They, they, they certainly can't play uncomplimentary football.
11:50You need to have something that's really working for you all throughout the game.
11:53And against the jets, it was what you're able to do on, on the line of scrimmage, uh,
11:59offensively and how you were able to really push them around and bullying when it mattered
12:02most.
12:02And, uh, that you, you didn't get any contributions.
12:05And if anything, New England kind of hit you on both sides of the ball.
12:08I thought off, off the first watch through, um, with what they did last night.
12:13Yeah.
12:13So, uh, now I got to get, you know, we, we went there for a while, Dulcich and Caleb
12:20don't touch the ball.
12:22And then we got them involved in a, in a drive there, but still, still with you.
12:27Are you with me to find more ways to get Dulcich?
12:30And I want to take anything because I saw the route Malik Washington ran one of the great
12:34routes that I seen to get open in the slot in the end zone.
12:37And it was just, my body would never allow me that the movement he made going inside
12:42and ended up coming back, making an easy throw from Malik was one of the great routes.
12:47And, uh, uh, he could have played anytime, anywhere with that route.
12:50He ran that was, that was big time stuff that, that we got out of Malik Washington.
12:56But boy, Caleb Douglas has got to be in every game plan with targets.
13:00Doesn't he?
13:02Yeah.
13:03Uh, I thought he had a great route against, um, Christian Gonzalez when they got backed
13:08up on that touchdown drive.
13:09And he, he caught that out route, uh, that, that set him up inside the 10 yard line.
13:13I thought that was an excellent route from Caleb.
13:15Yes, it was from Caleb.
13:17Um, now they, they've got a pair of really physical experience corners and Carlton Davis
13:22and Gonzalez.
13:23So you recognize that that's part of it too.
13:25And I think Malik Washington is, is becoming a really nice football player for you.
13:30But, um, you know, for, for the tight ends and, and, and Greg, you know, we, we had the
13:36first possession out of the, the half.
13:38You've, you force a three and out and Greg gets a target on third and nine and he doesn't
13:42get his head back to the ball and it hits him in the shoulder pad and you know, it almost
13:44gets picked off.
13:45Yeah.
13:46So like everybody's opportunities, you have to make the most of them.
13:51And that was like kind of the first of many throughout the course of the second half
13:56of like, Hey, what the heck, man?
13:58Like we, we had a chance there and it unfortunately didn't work out or we weren't on the same page
14:02or for whatever reason it was.
14:06Um, there's only so much to go around.
14:08They ended up running, I think 60 plays offensively throughout the course of the game.
14:12They kind of found some rhythm in the second and fourth quarters.
14:15But I think if you took the, the, the team total offense in the first and third quarters
14:20combined, you include the penalty yardage.
14:23I think they had negative yardage and across those 30 minutes of football.
14:27Yeah.
14:27So if, if that's how it's going to be sometimes, if you're going to be streaky and you can't
14:33expect them to, to execute at a super high level because there is so much use in new players
14:38and whatnot that you got to make a chance, you got to make your chances count when those
14:41balls come your way.
14:42Yeah.
14:42We've, uh, we've had a different personality from, uh, no question about it from, from quarter
14:48to quarter with this, uh, with this football team for, for sure.
14:51Hey bud, I, uh, I really appreciate you coming on with me this morning.
14:55And, um, what, what are your thoughts going forward now with, with there?
14:59We got a lot of guys playing better.
15:00I know nobody wants to hear that, but there are a lot of guys are making more and more
15:05plays and not just this class, but I thought Jordan Phillips had some really nice plays.
15:09Yeah.
15:10I'm glad you called Rodriguez and Brooks look good at time.
15:14Rodriguez, you know, forces another fumble with, uh, his ability to pop the ball out.
15:19And I don't know if Chopin Uche can do much more except close on a couple of plays that
15:24Chop has that one or two plays where he's right there and he just doesn't make the play
15:30when he gets a chance.
15:32Yeah.
15:32And I think some of that probably comes down to, to the front being complimentary too.
15:36I think that's credit to new England.
15:37They had a really good complimentary pass rush plan where they, they were getting off and
15:42winning early inside, but they were being disciplined on the edge.
15:45And they often had an extra guy that was kind of like a catch all guy.
15:49Right.
15:49And that's, you know, this pass rush for Miami, you know, the, just the complimentary element
15:54of it, I think it's still a work in progress unless you can get into some of your exotic
15:57fronts where you can put guys in different spots.
16:00So, uh, I agree with some, there's some really positive individual takeaways.
16:05It's just getting all of those performances to kind of be on the same level and an elevated
16:10level in a single week.
16:12And I thought you generally got that against the jets.
16:15You didn't get that against the Patriots.
16:17So you get another chance to do it against the Detroit.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Hey bud, thank you.
16:21Appreciate you coming on with me on a Monday.
16:23Thanks.
16:23Of course.
16:24Good talking with you.
16:25All right.
