A pair of adopted biological sisters who had never met or had contact with each other were left gob smacked when they discovered each other playing for opposite teams at a softball tournament. Sam Rensvold, 19, lives north of Billings, Montana, with her adopted family who knew she had a sister called Kyann, but because their adoptions had been different, had no way of contacting Kyann's family. Sam and the sisters' biological brother, Case, had been adopted through Lutheran Family Services, but Kyann, the middle child, had been adopted directly from their birth parents. As a result, Sam and Case were able to continue meeting up after being adopted to different families as babies, but Kyann's closed adoption meant they couldn't find her. Growing up in different parts of Montana, Sam and Kyann both shared a love of playing softball – even choosing the same number, playing in the same position, and pitching in a similar style. The sisters' talents took them to the state's annual Veterans Memorial Softball Classic, in Belgrade, a gathering of some of the best players in Montana.

00:00When I was growing up, I would like sit there imagine what it would be like if I ever met
00:03my
00:03sister. I've never heard of this happening. My mind knew like I met my sister, but I just
00:08couldn't understand like that was actually my sister. I was adopted immediately after birth.
00:16My adoptive family came and picked me up, took me, fostered me, and then they adopted me. I knew she
00:22existed. I just didn't know anything else about her. I was probably three-ish when my birth
00:29brother was born. He was able to find me. He just couldn't find Kyan. So that was like the missing
00:34piece. I was adopted like right when I was born and my adoption was closed. So I didn't know
00:41anything about my siblings, my birth mom, or like my birth parents. And so I would wonder like if I
00:49had siblings, but I didn't know how many like their genders were or how old they were or if they
00:54were
00:54still in Montana. I grew up playing every sport that I possibly could. I started playing
00:58t-ball when I was probably three or four. So it's been my whole life. I've been playing softball
01:05and it's just something I love with my whole heart. I played softball since like I can remember.
01:11My dad was like really into it. He coached me through all my younger years. So it was a really
01:17big part of my life. And every summer I would play. Right after I had graduated from high school,
01:24the tournament that we were at, they invite like the top softball players in Montana from every high
01:30school. Me and Haley have been friends since we were little. And she played in that softball tournament
01:36the year before. She told Sam like you just look exactly like my friend Kyan. Then next year comes
01:42around and I'm on Haley's team again. It was the first game of the day and I was playing Sam,
01:48but I didn't
01:49realize it. Me and my family were sitting in the outfield like behind the fence. My mom left to
01:55Kyan's family and asked if her daughter was adopted. And Kyan's mom was like, yeah. And my mom started
02:01saying all this information about my adoption, things she knew about Kyan's adoption. And then it was
02:06obvious that we had to be sisters. During a lightning delay of the game that me and Haley were playing,
02:11my mom comes over to the dugout and she's like, you have to come over here right now.
02:21My initial reaction was just to give her a handshake. I was just so excited to meet here.
02:27I almost couldn't like control anything. Over the summer, we finally got to meet up with Kyan too.
02:31So it was all three of us. And that was honestly one of the most fun times I've had in
02:35my life.
02:35It just seemed like we clicked really well. Just the way we play, like catch the ball pitch is all
02:41the same. Everything and how we act will laugh the same. It's just like looking in the mirror.
02:45The biggest thing is just our smile and our giggle. In any situation when we're playing,
02:50we both like tuck our sleeves up. That's what Kyan's mom noticed too. It's just crazy. We talk
02:55pretty much every day, always checking in on each other, how college is going. I think it was like
03:00the best possible way to meet her, doing something that we both love. And it was just like a full
03:06circle
03:07moment. South Pole's been such a big part of my life. And I know that she grew up the same
03:11way.
03:11The fact that we got to meet through it, it just makes it so much more special.
