In an exclusive interview on India Today, Congress leader and Member of Parliament Renuka Chowdhury mounted a sharp offensive against the central government, accusing it of systematically weakening democratic institutions. Chowdhury rejected allegations by the Bharatiya Janata Party that the opposition is undermining constitutional bodies, asserting instead, "They have misused every institution that has been established." She stated that the opposition had knocked on the doors of the Election Commission, the judiciary, and the President before taking the matter to the public. Highlighting parliamentary disruptions, she claimed her zero-hour notices were repeatedly disregarded and pointed out allegations of electoral roll manipulation, noting cases where living citizens were wrongly disenfranchised. Chowdhury maintained that the Congress party remains prepared to discuss voter roll discrepancies on the floor of the House, demanding transparency from the government.

00:00Renuka Chaudhary, Member of Parliament of the Congress Party, former Women and Child
00:06Development Minister, a veteran Congress leader, I would say, Renuka Ji, the BJP is saying
00:12that you are making mockery of institutions. If you are not able to win elections, you
00:18start mocking a constitutional authority like the Chief Election Commissioner. Next, if
00:24you are not able to get a favorable judgment, you will start mocking judiciary.
00:34It is a direct reflection in right proportion of their fear and terror. They are shrill and
00:44they are panicking and they will continue to make mistakes because this is an unjust, illegitimate
00:52government sitting there. They have misused every institution that has been established.
00:59They have fudged the entire electoral roll system and they will talk like this. We went
01:06to the EC, just to remind them in case they don't know. We went to the courts. We went to
01:12the Rashtrapati. We have tried every fora available to put this out democratically. And what have
01:21we done? What is the whatever words they're using? It's ridiculous. We have used the principle of
01:28democracy by the people, of the people, for the people. And that's what has happened to me.
01:36You are a member of parliament. Rahul Gandhi is a member of parliament. You have the parliament
01:43resolutions and options. They're talking. They're all preaching. Yes, yes, nothing happened.
01:50Nothing happened. Impeachment we tried in parliament. They didn't allow it. So this kind of bulldozing that
01:57this government indulges in, they've realized they've reached the end of the road. I want to tell you,
02:03I have given 20 notices, zero-hour notices in parliament. I'll show you the proof. Mysteriously,
02:13none of mine are accepted. Not a single one was I permitted to speak. An entire session. I'm not allowed.
02:21So what is the recourse for someone like me? I'll get back to the people. Because that is what democracy
02:29is about.
02:30So let them rant and revo. We'll have mock judiciary mock. You have made a mockery of all these institutions.
02:38You will go and arrest a young child in Kanyakumari because they said something about the prime minister.
02:44But the prime minister of this country doesn't come to parliament. He will not address a single press conference.
02:51He'll travel all over the world while Manipur is burning. They humiliate women in parliament and outside.
02:59Somebody, somebody is Pachasko Aror ka girlfriend. Somebody, I am Surpanaka.
03:03Which my dear brother, the prime minister will say because he recognizes familial traits.
03:10And this is the kind of government. And they have the audacity to question us and talk to us.
03:15Now, these, see the fraud that they indulged in. They told us, we said Jantar Mantar.
03:21They said, no, we've removed that. Arbitrally, middle of the night, they've changed their mind.
03:26No Jantar Mantar anymore. Where do we go? Go to Ramlila.
03:30So we applied for Ramlila. They gave us permission for Ramlila.
03:34And suddenly all business owners are writing letters to us. Why are you asking us?
03:39Ask the government. They didn't know that there are shops there.
03:43They didn't know that business will get affected. Why did they recommend Ramlila?
03:48This is how this government works. Then they're blaming us. We are anarchists.
03:53We are this. Now we don't have permission to walk on the road.
03:56You can go to Ramlila, but you can't walk. How do we reach the aeroplane?
04:01They'll give us tangas.
04:03My question now will be that you have been raising the issue of special intensive revision on multiple platforms.
04:16It started with the Supreme Court petitions, then moved to the streets.
04:21Rahul Gandhi is consistently saying that there is vote chori.
04:24But here is Home Minister Amit Shah, who proposes a special session of Parliament to discuss vote chori.
04:30Will the Congress be open to such an idea?
04:32Why not take up this entire issue on the floor of the House?
04:35What we saw at Mr. Khargei's home, have it on the floor of the House.
04:39Let it be part of House records.
04:42We have not denied that. We have not refused it. But when did they come up with this proposal?
04:50They have kept Parliament without proroguing it.
04:53It's the first time I'm seeing so many days that the Parliament is not prorogued.
04:57We are on to the heels of a winter session. I don't even know if there will be one.
05:02And this is how they operate. And so suddenly last night they wake up and say,
05:07Oh, but let's discuss it in Parliament. Why didn't you all these days?
05:12You had an entire session where there was disruption. Why didn't you call for it?
05:17Why didn't you say, OK, let's stop all this. Let's get on. This is the subject. Single point agenda.
05:23You think all those citizens who came today and spoke in that, they're all liars.
05:29They're citizens who were handed their death certificates while they're alive and kicking in front of the EC.
05:36I mean, isn't this bizarre? This is ridiculous that you treat your citizens like this.
05:44Thirteen crored people. This government has no experience. Do they understand the consequences of that?
05:51If these citizens are disenfranchised now, you have stolen their right.
05:58You have forged and fudged documents. You have violated every norm of the Constitution.
06:06And you are denied. Where will they go? They can't get jobs.
06:09Now, I don't know in this country, who are we? Who's going to certify who we are?
06:15We are dhimagin aksals. Thank you. At least you recognize we have a dhimag. Can't say the same about you.
06:22But what are we? How do you recognize us? Tomorrow you'll turn around and say all of you are...
06:29Members of Parliament don't have their vote right while he's sitting in Parliament.
06:33Come on. I mean, forget this ruling and opposition business. Please recall. The world is watching us.
06:43The youth are watching us. Last question. And I have 30 seconds for you, ma'am. I have 30 seconds
06:47for you.
06:48In 30 seconds, please respond what will follow this. This was high on optics, high on political messaging.
06:58What is... Sorry, I didn't get that.
07:00I'm saying what will... What now? Because an election commissioner can be impeached only through a proper process.
07:13If the government has the audacity or the courage, let them go through the proper process.
07:20We'll do what now is something I won't tell on TV. What now is what we'll do and we'll show.
07:25If the government has to... The government has to decide. It's not our responsibility.
07:30If one Gyanesh is more valuable to them than Bharat Desh, then let them make it clear. We'll take it
07:37from there.
07:39All right, veteran Congress leader, Renuka Chaudhary. Always a pleasure speaking to you, ma'am.
07:45Thank you so much for your time here on India Today.
07:48Thank you. That's all from me.
