Besides the obvious R&R, one of our favorite parts about going to the beach is that sexily tousled hair that seems to only be attainable after a day spent in the surf — until now. We were puzzling out the best way to store cases of bottled ocean water when our go-to hair expert, Bethany Brill, thankfully intervened. In this video tutorial, Bethany shows us her insider hair tricks to achieving perfectly imperfect beach waves, no sea salt required.

00:00Start over.
00:01Hi, I'm Tara from Refinery29.
00:03Wait, I wasn't smiling.
00:04Sorry.
00:09Hi, I'm Tara from Refinery29.
00:11And I'm Bethany Brill.
00:12Everyone loves beachy hair in the summer.
00:14Here's an easy way to get that texture.
00:16So we're starting with second day hair.
00:19We're going to center part.
00:21It doesn't have to be perfect because this is beach hair
00:24after all.
00:25Scrape a little bit of mousse on the surface of the hair.
00:29This will give us a little extra hold
00:31without adding any weight to the style.
00:35Loosely braid large sections of the hair.
00:37Holding the end, loosen the braid even further.
00:40And straight iron over the braid.
00:43Clamp down as you go.
00:45Straight iron twice or more, depending
00:48on the thickness of your hair.
00:50Continue around your head with large sections.
00:54After you finish braiding and ironing your whole head,
00:57go over the braids one more time with the iron.
01:00This will reinforce the wave.
01:03Don't overcome with your fingers.
01:05Run your fingers through your hair and rub your roots,
01:08making it all big, voluminous, and tousled looking.
01:12Use an iron to polish the front of your hair.
01:16Add a little dry texturizing wax to give it a piecey post-swim texture.
01:21You may not be able to hit the beach as much
01:23as you like this summer.
01:24But with these quick tricks, you'll
01:26look like a cute surfer girl all the time.
