00:00Let me give a little bit of an introduction before we begin with this conversation.
00:05Dr. Apoor is trained at the SDM College of Ayurveda in Urupi and founded the Ayushree Ayurvedic Clinic.
00:14He has been in practice for about 25 years and his patients range from film stars to corporates to celebrities,
00:24industrialists and also the common man.
00:25So he's got a lot of wisdom. He's treated everything from psoriasis to arthritis and he describes Ayurveda as a
00:35lifestyle and he favors moderation over strict diets as well.
00:39So there are lots of reasons to believe that and believe him already.
00:44When it comes to Dr. Mathai, he is a homeopath. He's trained at the Bengaluru BHMS and also an MD
00:53in homeopathy from London.
00:54He further went on to study acupuncture and Chinese pulse diagnosis.
00:59He talks about the mind and body medicine for which he went to Howard Medical School and he speaks about
01:07therapeutic yoga as well.
01:09Amongst his many patients are King Charles who came all the way down to Bangalore to get treated by him.
01:18He was also one of his personal guests at the 2023 coronation that happened in London and along with treating
01:26very high profile guests,
01:28he also runs a free community clinic around Bengaluru and he has patients that come to him from across 125
01:35countries.
01:37So there is a lot of belief, there's a lot of merit that goes around here.
01:41So let me take the first question to you, Dr. Mathai.
01:45When the King of England drops everything that he has to do to come see you in Bengaluru,
01:52what is it that he understands about alternate medicine that a lot of Indians don't?
02:00No, Indians believe in it.
02:03I would say the Indians believe in eye systems of medicine more than anybody else on the planet Earth.
02:08But the Western world also now recognize the benefits of Ayurveda, naturopathy, homeopathy, therapeutic yoga,
02:15which is widely practiced all over the world.
02:18So my practice in the last 40 years seeing patients in Americans in America to Europeans and Indians,
02:24all over the world there's a search for the proper, authentic, integrative medicine.
02:29I don't want to call it as alternative medicine.
02:32Because today's world, Western medicine and other systems of medicine are working together in America and Europe and other parts.
02:40And India is the motherland of all the systems of medicine.
02:42So we have got an opportunity to combine together and do the best for the patient.
02:49When you look at the patient first, you don't think about the systems of medicine.
02:52I have patients coming from ICU to our hospital.
02:56And I have patients from our hospital moved into the other hospital for investigations or second opinion.
03:03So we had to work together.
03:04That's the future of medicine.
03:06That's the reason that the king also came, and I know him for more than 25 years,
03:12and a personal physician for 15 years.
03:14But they decided to come to Bangalore to my center to stay and publicly do treatment,
03:19which some people think that we are doing some UHA medicine.
03:24But it's not UHA medicine.
03:25It is a genuine, authentic methodology, which scientifically proved also.
03:29So because of the benefit, actually it is recommended by the best of the best Western medical doctors,
03:35recommendationally the king came.
03:37So that will show that how respectful Indian systems of medicines are.
03:42Yes, indeed.
03:44Dr. Apoor, there is a word these days which is more popular than health,
03:49and it's called wellness.
03:51But would you say that Ayurveda was the original wellness,
03:56what was known as Ayurveda then,
03:58the science that did not want to cure but wanted to prevent.
04:05Is that what the true meaning of Ayurveda really is?
04:10Good evening, all of you.
04:12Now, in the next half an hour with Sonal,
04:15let me sail you through so many practical experiences,
04:20which you all can adopt in your day-to-day life.
04:23It should be like so good for you that you go from here with a wealth of knowledge,
04:28which you can adopt in your day-to-day life.
04:30So coming to Sonal's question, there is a quote in Ayurveda,
04:39to prevent disease in the healthy is the primary goal of Ayurveda.
04:44To keep the health in healthy form as you are is the primary goal of Ayurveda.
04:55So please, please, please understand that try your level best to prevent the diseases,
05:01not get there by following a healthy lifestyle.
05:05Once you get there, it's all about medicines, whether it is Ayurveda, allopathy,
05:10popping pills, does not take you anywhere.
05:12So I see a lot of young kids here, preventive, start good lifestyle when you are young,
05:19keep yourself healthy, adopt simple Ayurvedic principles,
05:22you will really, really be away from doctors, not the appellate.
05:28Stay away from doctors, that's what we want to do,
05:30and the best doctors are the ones, they say that I am a good doctor if my patient does not
05:35come to me.
05:36That means I am doing something right, right?
05:38But what is it about Ayurveda, what is it about homeopathy, Dr. Mathai,
05:44that we don't understand truly?
05:48If there is one sort of definition you could bring about.
05:52No, the situation is that the Western medicine is very much a scientifically researched methodology of medicine.
06:03That's great.
06:04And Western medicine has given amazing benefit to the humankind.
06:08But the same way, the traditional systems of medicine cannot be measured in the very same Western medical model,
06:15in a lab test or a test on an animal.
06:18But the Ayurveda or other systems of medicine, omepathy also, is a time-tested methodology.
06:254,000 years of evidence is good enough evidence.
06:30Actually, I am not criticizing, but many of the modern Western medical evidence won't even last for 40 years.
06:36So the Ayurvedic systems of medicines have proved the efficiency of the treatment,
06:41especially in chronic diseases, for thousands of years.
06:43And we are not reinventing, we are providing in the most authentic way.
06:48I know that some of the Western medical doctors could say about the claims of the gurus and Ayurvedic physicians.
06:56I don't suspect for the claims.
06:58I would say the most proper methodology of treatment is the answer.
07:03That answer under the medical care, under the qualified doctors and their methodology,
07:08and provide it in the right, straightforward way, that's what we are doing.
07:12That's attracting patients from all over the world.
07:14But what would you say to some very popular doctors like the liver doc?
07:19He goes online and he says that Ayurveda is a scam, he says homeopathy is a scam,
07:26it's doing more damage than good.
07:28Yes, I know, I know him, but he doesn't know me, so he doesn't see my patients because my patients
07:35won't go to him.
07:37So he sees patients from places where some nonsensical things were done.
07:42You mean to say your patients don't need to see him?
07:45No, I see a better, my patients see better doctors around the world and come to me.
07:49So they don't go to one liver doctor in one part of India.
07:52So it's not personally criticizing the person, but a lot of so-called,
07:55I would say at the same time, the best of the best Western medical doctors in India and abroad
08:00recommend and refer patients.
08:03I don't want to name them, but they are all the world-famous doctors.
08:06So that means there are sensible doctors, they understand the limitation of their systems of medicine,
08:11like I know my limitation.
08:14Same way Western medical doctors also know the limitations, so they refer each other,
08:19and because their aim is the benefit of the patient, not my ego trip,
08:23or just a so-called scientific trip.
08:26Yeah.
08:27Dr. Apto, but tell me this.
08:29Say a person walks up to your clinic, and he says,
08:32you know what, I've come to you, but I'm a non-believer.
08:36What would you tell them?
08:37How would you turn an allopathic believer into an Ayurveda believer?
08:43So the first and foremost thing here is go to an Ayurveda doctor to improve your lifestyle,
08:51not to take a prescribed medicine, prescribed medicines like so many,
08:55kashayams, powders, that, this.
08:58You would also be like, many of you would have gone to Ayurvedic doctors,
09:01you come back from them with lengthy prescriptions, right?
09:05Like, kashayam, churanam, powders, so many things which are non-palatable.
09:10So, first, the audience mindset should change, patient's mindset should change.
09:17Approach an Ayurveda doctor to change your lifestyle,
09:21to improve your lifestyle, to get better,
09:23to follow dhincharya, to follow ruthucharya, seasonal regimen,
09:27and be fit, stay fit, by adopting simple principles,
09:31which cost good for you, can never cost bad for you.
09:35But I have a counter to that.
09:39Both sciences on, say, homeopathy and Ayurveda,
09:43was written back in the day when lifestyle was very different,
09:48where life on earth was very different,
09:50where screen times did not exist,
09:52where all of us did not have this crazy work schedule.
09:55So how do you still apply Ayurveda in a non-complicated way,
10:01in this hustled-up life that we all have?
10:04How does one do that simply?
10:06So to adopt certain simple things which can be game-changing,
10:10as I told you in the beginning of the session,
10:13I will travel you through so many things which you can take away from here.
10:17Like, for example, the moment you wake up in the morning,
10:21you are supposed to have about 400 to 500 ml of room-temperature water.
10:27Do not drink hot water in the morning.
10:29Many of you prefer some kardas and hot liquids, hot water.
10:34No.
10:34Have about 400 ml of room-temperature water first thing in the morning.
10:38Like the book said, six anjelis of room-temperature water.
10:43Anjeli is two fistfuls.
10:44So which roughly in today's time is about 400 ml, 500 ml of room-temperature water.
10:51It doesn't take away your screen time.
10:53It doesn't cause damage to your busy life.
10:55At night, I will tell you another wonderful tip for night.
10:59What the book said, exactly from the book,
11:02take two tea mugs of water,
11:05boil it in such a way that it reduces to one mug,
11:09and a low fire.
11:11Drink this water, hot, hot water at night every day.
11:15You see your digestion.
11:17You will never get into heart attacks,
11:20which usually happen at 3 a.m. in the morning.
11:22You will end up going to a good bowel moment in the morning.
11:26Does it cost you anything?
11:27Just water.
11:28Hot water.
11:29But the book specifically mentioned
11:32two mugs of hot water reduced to one mug.
11:35Not just in a kettle you made the water hot and had.
11:39And like now, oh, where is the research for this?
11:43If you drink hot water at night,
11:45you will definitely not die.
11:46Just drink it.
11:47You will definitely benefit out of it.
11:49So such simple tips can be game-changing.
11:52Dhinacharya is another amazing chapter,
11:54which can be like,
11:55like for example,
11:56the book says you have the heaviest meal for lunch.
12:00Like usually we all have a busy schedule.
12:04We have heavy dinner.
12:05Heavy dinner is one of the reasons
12:07for so many metabolic disorders,
12:10PCODs, heart attacks, cholesterols,
12:12thyroid problems, heavy dinners,
12:15late night awakening.
12:16So you can just,
12:18the book says like have your lunch.
12:21The heaviest meal should be lunch.
12:22The breakfast should be light.
12:24The dinner should be lightest.
12:27Never drink water with your meal.
12:29Like we all,
12:30like I was in US the other day,
12:32not even water,
12:34ice water with the food.
12:36So never drink water with your meal.
12:38Keep a gap of 45 minutes before and after.
12:41Chew your food well.
12:43Sheta padam.
12:43Walk 100 steps after every meal.
12:46This does not disturb any of your day-to-day routine.
12:50Like say you are in office,
12:51you just had your lunch.
12:52Walk 100 steps,
12:53like go there and come back as 100 steps.
12:55Walk that and see the benefits.
12:57You'll never get bloating,
12:58you'll never get acidity
13:00and eat in moderation.
13:02Do not overeat,
13:02eat in moderation.
13:04The simple techniques can be
13:06very, very game-changing.
13:07Dr. Prud,
13:08do you think
13:09Ayurveda would really benefit
13:11from a name change?
13:12Maybe if we called it wellness,
13:13people would understand that better
13:14because everything that you've said
13:16is what wellness experts
13:18speak about on Instagram.
13:19I think that they would have picked up
13:20from these books
13:21or from doctors like me.
13:23Okay.
13:24Probably the second one.
13:25Probably the second one.
13:29Dr. Mathai,
13:30there is so much spoken
13:32on alternate therapy
13:34where there is focus
13:37on something that you also love
13:39which is Panchakarma.
13:41Could you explain that
13:43to our audiences a little,
13:44you know,
13:45easily on what exactly is it
13:48and why it is such a focus?
13:50Focus on?
13:51On Panchakarma.
13:53Yes,
13:54Panchakarma is one of the best
13:55methodology for prevention,
13:58early intervention
13:58and healing.
14:00Many diseases
14:01much before it's developed,
14:02especially the chronic diseases.
14:04My observation
14:04in the last 40 years
14:06of practice
14:06is that 10 years
14:08before you develop
14:09a metabolic disorder
14:10like diabetes
14:11or a neurological disorder,
14:13even a simple balance issue,
14:15it is visible slowly
14:16in the system.
14:17Nothing happened overnight.
14:19All the chronic diseases.
14:21Panchakarma is one of the methodology
14:22in our practice
14:23we use
14:24and I have people
14:25using it
14:25every year
14:26for the last 20 plus years.
14:28it will prevent
14:29and reverse
14:30the aging process.
14:31Somebody especially
14:31above 60.
14:33So it is an amazing methodology
14:35where it rebalances the system
14:37and put the system
14:39into a healthy path.
14:41It's not for nirvana
14:42or some amazing things happening.
14:45It is a proper balancing.
14:47And I do that every year
14:48so I can see the benefit myself
14:51and I have patients
14:52from around the world
14:53coming over,
14:53Indians also,
14:54do every year
14:55in a proper panchakarma.
14:56So I would say
14:57anybody
14:58is interested in health,
15:01aging issue,
15:03longevity,
15:04which is scientifically
15:05we proved also
15:06that it has an impact
15:09on anti-inflammatory markers,
15:11even impact
15:12on the DNA molecules
15:14of the aging process
15:15in your system.
15:16Yeah.
15:17So panchakarma
15:17is an amazing methodology.
15:18Yes,
15:19but it is in India,
15:21it is widely used
15:22to misuse it
15:23more than use it properly.
15:25That's a problem
15:25with Ayurveda.
15:26Yes, yes.
15:27I'm so glad you brought it up
15:28because that was going
15:29to be my next question.
15:30That the biggest issue
15:31I think alternate therapy
15:32faces in India
15:34at least today
15:35is that we do not
15:36find pure products.
15:38There is a long list
15:39of products
15:40that one has to follow
15:41and one does not find
15:42always the right thing.
15:43Do you have a tip
15:45for the audience
15:46on how to test
15:47that what you are being given,
15:48what you are being prescribed
15:49is actually correct or not?
15:50We will start with Dr. Proul.
15:52So if you,
15:54as I said,
15:55if you follow
15:56a proper lifestyle
15:57and follow proper dinacharya,
15:59proper ruthucharya,
16:01and now for example,
16:03it's such an amazing day
16:05we have this meeting here
16:08that we are,
16:10today is October 30th.
16:12From November 1st
16:14to November 15th,
16:15we are in ruthu sandhi.
16:17Ruthu means season,
16:19sandhi means joining,
16:20one season joining.
16:22We are in shardh ruthu now
16:25and we are entering
16:26hemantra ruthu.
16:27This is the time
16:29the next 15 days
16:30doctors will make
16:32a lot of money.
16:33Viral fevers,
16:34dengues,
16:35cold scuffs,
16:36fevers.
16:37So during this ruthu sandhi,
16:39follow a healthy lifestyle.
16:41This is the right time
16:42for like,
16:43you asked Dr. Isaac
16:44about panchikarma.
16:46Like 1st November
16:47to 15th November,
16:48roughly the next 15 days
16:50is the ideal time
16:51to do panchikarma.
16:53Because that one season
16:54is changing,
16:55your pitta,
16:56which is very,
16:57very high
16:57at the moment,
16:59gradually shifts
16:59its focus to vata.
17:01Pitta is the gut.
17:02Pitta is the fire
17:03and water in the body.
17:05The acid quotient
17:05of the body
17:06is very high
17:07during this time.
17:08So you are coming
17:10from that phase
17:10and you are entering
17:11into a phase of vata.
17:13So pitta and vata,
17:15two different phases.
17:16This is the time
17:17when you get sick.
17:18When people get sick,
17:19they get fevers,
17:20they get viral infections.
17:21But Dr. Abdur,
17:22this is also the time
17:22for Diwali.
17:23Diwali.
17:24This is the time
17:24for all the lovely sweets.
17:26Pollution.
17:26This is the time
17:27where you meet people,
17:28you make merry.
17:30Yeah.
17:30And you are asking people
17:31to let go of all of it
17:32and do panchikarma.
17:34No, no, no.
17:34You just got it
17:35a little wrong.
17:37You know,
17:38we just finished Navaratra.
17:40That's the real Ruttasandi.
17:42So the Navaratra fasting,
17:44the nine days of fasting,
17:46which if it is done correctly,
17:48is purely meant
17:49for your health.
17:50Yes.
17:50You keep it in the name
17:51of the goddess,
17:53but it's actually
17:54for your good health.
17:55That is the Ruttasandi.
17:56So you fasted
17:57and your agni has improved now.
17:59And now you are ready
18:00to eat the sweets
18:01for Diwali.
18:02Well, I'm very glad
18:03because I fasted
18:04all nine days
18:05and I'm constantly looking
18:06for an excuse to fast.
18:08But which brings me
18:09to this concept of fasting.
18:10I think alternate medicine
18:12taught us that.
18:13A lot of times
18:14we do not have
18:16perhaps the right data
18:18to back it.
18:18But if you look
18:19at the science
18:20of autophagy
18:21or what science
18:22called autophagy
18:23and what is what we call
18:24fasting in different cultures
18:25and different religions,
18:26it often comes
18:27at a time
18:28when the weather
18:28is shifting.
18:29Exactly.
18:30It often comes,
18:31Navaratras for example,
18:32even Rosa in,
18:33you know,
18:34in Islamic countries,
18:36it's followed
18:36at a time
18:36when the season
18:37is changing.
18:38So there was
18:38some science
18:39behind how
18:41these pasts
18:42were also kept.
18:43Why is fasting
18:44so important?
18:45If I can start with you.
18:45Especially today's world
18:48with the junk food
18:49and everything,
18:49fasting is more important
18:50than the olden time.
18:52So fasting
18:53in a regulated way
18:54helps your intestine
18:56and your liver
18:57and your entire system
18:58to get a restful time.
19:00But fasting
19:00also cannot be done
19:01just like that.
19:02Go and start a fasting
19:03like overnight
19:04and do it.
19:05That can have
19:06its own negative effect
19:06on your health.
19:07So you have to have
19:08a balanced
19:09as well as
19:10a regulated fasting,
19:11either religious,
19:13properly,
19:13which was done
19:13for thousands of years
19:14or a medical
19:15based on a doctor's advice.
19:17If you do properly
19:18and you cannot
19:20jump into fasting
19:21and get out of fasting.
19:22So you have to do it
19:23in a regulated way
19:24and if you do
19:25that on a regular basis
19:26on a yearly basis
19:27or twice a year
19:28in a short or long,
19:29it has huge impact.
19:31It will take away
19:32a lot of your
19:34billing in the hospital.
19:36Dr. Apoor.
19:37So there is another quote,
19:40another amazing quote
19:41from Sanskrit Ayurveda.
19:43Langanam Paramaushadham.
19:45Langanam means fasting.
19:46Param means best.
19:47Aushadham means medicine.
19:48Fasting is the best medicine.
19:50But when, where,
19:52whom, how, why.
19:53This is so important.
19:56If I want to keep it
19:57simple for the audience,
20:00do you like say,
20:01you all know what is
20:02Eka Dashi in Hindu calendar?
20:04Yes.
20:04So just fast on a day
20:06of Eka Dashi
20:06and see your health.
20:07How better you will be.
20:09Like all the rubbish
20:10you have eaten
20:10in the last 15 days,
20:12it just washes it out.
20:13It's basically fasting
20:14every 15 days,
20:16giving your body a break.
20:17It comes twice a month.
20:18Month.
20:19It comes on the 11th day
20:20of raising and setting moon.
20:22Yes.
20:22Eka Dashi.
20:22Dashi means 10.
20:24Eka plus 1, 11.
20:25So 11th day of raising moon
20:26and the 11th day
20:28of setting moon,
20:29if you just fast.
20:30You can just search
20:31what are the Eka Dashi
20:32dates for the next month.
20:33Google will tell you.
20:35Just fast on those
20:36Eka Dashi days.
20:37You can fast like say
20:40begin with 24 hours.
20:41People do 36 hours.
20:43People do sajal fasting.
20:45They drink water and fast.
20:46People do nirjal fasting.
20:48They don't even drink water.
20:50This fasting,
20:52like say,
20:52all the bad things
20:54you have done.
20:55You have eaten bad foods.
20:56You have eaten sweets.
20:57You have eaten maida.
20:58This will just wash away
20:59from your system.
21:00And why?
21:01Why is it the 11th day
21:03of the moon?
21:03Can anybody in the audience
21:05guess why the scholars,
21:07why Ayurveda scholars,
21:08how our ancient scholars,
21:10our ancestors,
21:12have put it for the Eka Dashi,
21:1411th day of the moon?
21:22It's the mind and the gut.
21:25So 11th day of the moon,
21:27of the rising moon,
21:29if you fast,
21:30not only your gut is cleansed,
21:32your mind is cleansed.
21:33The mind is your first brain
21:36and your gut is your second brain.
21:38So that's the reason
21:39why it's the 11th day.
21:41And then came
21:42the intermittent fasting,
21:44then came autophagy
21:45and so many stuff.
21:46But just in your busy lives,
21:48don't need not go
21:49for intermittent fasting.
21:50It's tough.
21:51You're starving.
21:52You have work.
21:53You need your coffee.
21:55But do this on Eka Dashi
21:57twice a month
21:58and see amazing health benefits.
22:00That's a good prescription.
22:01Twice a month is not bad.
22:03But when you say fast,
22:04what do you mean by that?
22:05Because some people
22:06fast only with fruits.
22:08Some people fast
22:09by having only liquids.
22:11Some allow themselves
22:13some tea, coffee indulgence.
22:14What is the true meaning
22:17of fast?
22:17My grandmother used to call
22:20all different types of fasting
22:22as monkeys fast.
22:25So it's like you fast,
22:27you fast.
22:28Otherwise, please don't.
22:29And I've seen some of my relatives,
22:32they eat much more carbs,
22:34much more sugar.
22:35They feast.
22:36The feast on the day of fasting,
22:38that can only do harm.
22:40Their sugar levels increase
22:41during the day of fast
22:42and that only spoils their health.
22:45It can be so damaging
22:47for your livers,
22:48for your kidneys.
22:49It can increase proteinuria.
22:51Very, very bad.
22:52If you fast,
22:53just fast.
22:53Have lukewarm water.
22:55Fast.
22:55You can target like,
22:57okay,
22:57on the day of Eka Dashi,
22:58I'll do 12 hours.
23:00I'll do 24 hours.
23:02Oh,
23:02there is like,
23:03oh,
23:04Vishnu ke naam se Eka Dashi.
23:05It's not Vishnu,
23:06it's your health.
23:07Who is Vishnu?
23:08Vishnu is your health.
23:09Within you.
23:10The Vishnu is inside you.
23:12So you start with,
23:13say,
23:13an elderly person,
23:14okay,
23:15let me do intermittent fasting
23:16on the day of Eka Dashi.
23:18Or let me do 12 hours.
23:19Let me do 24,
23:2036.
23:21You're a young girl like you
23:22should do 36 hours of fast
23:24on Eka Dashi.
23:24Very happy to do it.
23:25We'll take you up
23:26on that challenge.
23:27But I just want to take a moment
23:28to reflect on
23:29what has just been said
23:30on stage here.
23:31And yes,
23:31you're hearing it
23:32from a homeopath
23:33and yes,
23:33you're hearing it
23:34from an Ayurveda expert.
23:35But just a couple of hours ago,
23:37we heard a gut doctor
23:39speak about it.
23:40We had an entire session
23:41on gut and brain access
23:43and he said exactly this,
23:45that how your gut
23:45and brain is connected
23:46is very intertwined
23:47and one impacts the other.
23:49So you see
23:49the common thread there.
23:51The science with facts
23:52or without does exist,
23:54which is really interesting.
23:55We are towards
23:55the last few minutes
23:56of this conversation
23:58in which I want
23:59to bring in
24:00a quick one.
24:01We are in the era
24:02of supplements.
24:03Everybody loves them
24:04or even if they don't,
24:06they like popping it.
24:07We as Indians love
24:08if we give them
24:09a pill for something.
24:10One for sleep,
24:11one for good energy,
24:13one to ensure
24:14that your mind
24:15is not overactive.
24:16But in alternate medicine,
24:19there are so many
24:20beautiful remedies
24:21that are available
24:22in your kitchen as well.
24:24We spoke about it
24:24a little while ago.
24:25So if I could throw in
24:27a couple of diseases
24:30at you
24:30which are very common
24:31and if you could give me
24:32some natural ways
24:34of sort of
24:35helping with it.
24:37Again,
24:37I just want to give
24:38our audiences
24:38a cavity over here.
24:39This does not mean
24:40that you stop
24:41having your medication.
24:42This means
24:43that you're helping
24:44your body to recover.
24:45So we'll start
24:46with Dr. Aprood
24:46and I'll come to
24:47Dr. Mathai as well.
24:48Right?
24:49Dr. Aprood,
24:50for diabetes,
24:51what is the one
24:52kitchen spice
24:53that you think
24:54could help?
24:55Methi dana,
24:56fenugreek seeds.
24:57And before further talking,
24:58let me tell you,
24:59you start your
25:00methi seeds
25:01every morning
25:02doesn't mean
25:03you stop
25:04your allopathy medicines.
25:06You do the methi seeds,
25:08you improve your lifestyle,
25:09you reduce
25:10your carbohydrates,
25:11you maintain
25:12your protein quotient
25:13in the body,
25:13exercise regularly
25:14and request
25:15the allopathy doctor
25:16showing him
25:17your results
25:18to reduce
25:18the allopathy medicine
25:19gradually.
25:20Please, please,
25:20please do not
25:21stop anything overnight.
25:22That's one of the
25:23worst things
25:24patients can do
25:26and some of the
25:27doctors claim
25:28they can cure
25:29diabetes overnight,
25:30they can cure
25:31cancers overnight.
25:32Please, please,
25:33don't fall prey
25:34to any of those.
25:35Over a period of time,
25:37it's like,
25:37you take it
25:38as a challenge
25:39and prove to the doctor,
25:40your allopathy doctor,
25:42that yeah,
25:42now it's time,
25:43doc,
25:43you need to reduce
25:44my medicine.
25:44My numbers are much better.
25:46Yeah, well,
25:47that's the right,
25:48that's an absolutely
25:48brilliant approach.
25:49Dr. Mathai,
25:50what about
25:51the fenugreek,
25:52let me give them
25:53the right advice
25:54of the area.
25:55Fenugreek seeds
25:55must be taken
25:57as per your age.
25:58Okay.
25:59Like, say,
25:59a 70-year-old man
26:01counts 70 fenugreek seeds,
26:03methi seeds,
26:03methi dana,
26:04soak them overnight
26:05in a cup of hot water
26:07and in the morning
26:08drink the water,
26:09chew and eat the seeds
26:10as well.
26:11Oh,
26:12chew and eat the seeds
26:13as well.
26:14Get it right,
26:15otherwise it can
26:16backfire.
26:17Okay.
26:17And as per the age.
26:20Yeah.
26:21So, if I'm 30,
26:22I got to have 30.
26:2330?
26:23No, not more.
26:24It'll cost too much
26:25pitta in the body,
26:25otherwise.
26:26Ah, that's interesting.
26:28What about cholesterol?
26:29Me?
26:30Yeah.
26:31Kashmiri single garlic buds.
26:33Kashmiri garlic,
26:34not the normal garlic.
26:35Every morning,
26:36you can consume
26:37four or five
26:39Kashmiri garlics,
26:40preferably with
26:41small b honey.
26:43Like,
26:44honey,
26:44there is
26:45one normal honey
26:46and one small bee honey.
26:48Now, again,
26:48to the audience,
26:49why small bee honey?
26:50Why not the normal honey?
26:52What's the difference?
26:53Research.
26:54Okay.
26:54Small bees can penetrate
26:56deeper into the flowers
26:57and can get the best
26:59out of the honey.
27:00Because they're so tiny.
27:01They can go deep.
27:02So,
27:03this small bee honey,
27:04a spoon,
27:05put five Kashmiri
27:06single garlic buds
27:07into them,
27:08chew this empty stomach
27:09every morning.
27:11This can manage
27:12your cholesterol
27:12very well.
27:13And slowly,
27:14slowly,
27:15slowly,
27:15if you're on a
27:1620 mg statin,
27:1740 mg statin,
27:18with the advice
27:19of allopathy doctor,
27:20you can cut it down
27:21by having good results.
27:22Okay.
27:23What about high blood pressure?
27:25I'll give you
27:26a fantastic trip.
27:27Especially,
27:27nowadays,
27:28even young children,
27:30130s,
27:30140s,
27:31where you don't need
27:32that medicine,
27:32but you can still
27:33control it yourself.
27:35Like,
27:35a cup of hot water,
27:38ajwain,
27:39like,
27:39half a teaspoon of ajwain,
27:41boiled in hot water,
27:41like a green tea,
27:42and add five to six
27:44saffron into it.
27:45Okay.
27:46Your good quality
27:47organic saffron
27:48and sip it
27:49so aromatic,
27:50so nice tea
27:50at bedtime.
27:52You can do that
27:52two times water,
27:54reduce it to one time,
27:55by adding this stuff,
27:57drink it,
27:59it's one of the best
28:00blood thinner
28:01and controls
28:02your blood pressure
28:03so effectively.
28:04Dr. Mathai,
28:05for sleep.
28:07That's a million dollar
28:08question.
28:09Yes, yes.
28:10There are several
28:11herbal extracts
28:12which is very good
28:13to calm your mind.
28:14There's no sleeping
28:15medicine as such.
28:17These days,
28:18Kareena Kapoor Khan
28:19has made it very famous
28:20to rub ghee
28:21on your foot
28:22before you go to sleep.
28:23Does that work?
28:25It works.
28:26Not necessarily ghee.
28:27Your loving person
28:30gives you a foot massage
28:31and makes you
28:31put you to sleep.
28:32I give that prescription
28:33to people also.
28:34But there are
28:35some herbal extracts
28:36like passiflora
28:37and things like that.
28:38They will help.
28:38So when people
28:39ask for a medicine,
28:40they say there's
28:41no medicine to sleep.
28:42You have to do
28:43the right thing,
28:44keep the mobile phone away
28:45and then don't watch
28:46your television
28:46and maybe put your
28:47foot in your cold water.
28:49There are so many
28:50lifestyle modifications
28:51and lifestyle management
28:52will give your best sleep.
28:54So it's possible
28:55and we do that
28:56but we won't do
28:56any prescription for sleep.
28:58Right.
28:58What about hormone imbalance?
29:00Women specifically.
29:02Yeah, hormone imbalance
29:04is a lot of herbal
29:05extracts are very,
29:06very efficient
29:07and homeopathic medicines
29:08are there
29:08and Ayurvedic medicines
29:10are there.
29:11Again, it's not about
29:12one hormone.
29:13It's about that person's
29:14constitution.
29:15That's the difference
29:16between the Western medicine
29:17and the AIU systems
29:19of medicine.
29:19We have to look at
29:20each person's constitution.
29:21Based on that,
29:22we have to provide
29:22certain herbs
29:23or certain so-called
29:25medicines to balance
29:26the hormonal system
29:27and menopausal woman
29:28and everybody
29:29we treat very well
29:30without any HRT
29:32and things like that
29:32or those who are in HRT
29:34we reduce it
29:35over a period of time
29:36because hormonal changes
29:38or menopause
29:38is a normal human nature.
29:40It's not a disease.
29:42So don't treat it
29:42like a disease.
29:43Treat it to balance
29:44the situation.
29:46Again, lifestyle is important.
29:48Eating habits are important.
29:49All the aspects are important.
29:50So it's,
29:51by the end of the day,
29:52there's no one solution
29:53for any disease
29:54or one solution
29:55for anything.
29:56It's all goes
29:57with a lifestyle modification,
30:00eating habits
30:01in today's world
30:01and stressful
30:02reduction of stress
30:04and good sleep.
30:05That will give the answer.
30:07Dr. Apoor,
30:07you want to take up
30:08on hormonal imbalance?
30:10A couple of things, yeah.
30:11So one is the
30:13rubbing ghee on the feet.
30:15Maybe probably
30:15she can afford that.
30:16But the thing is
30:18in Ayurvedic books,
30:20when we speak on the stage,
30:22we need to speak
30:22with reference
30:23from the book, yeah?
30:24Yeah.
30:24So we trust the book.
30:25We go by the book.
30:26So the book says
30:27the best thing
30:28one can do
30:29every night
30:30is Pada Abhyangam.
30:31Pada means feet,
30:33Abhyangam means massage.
30:35Okay.
30:35Have a foot massage
30:36like your maid,
30:37yourself,
30:38rub oil on your feet
30:40every night
30:41and before going to sleep.
30:44It says,
30:44it can,
30:45you will not get
30:46any disease.
30:47So Pada Abhyangam
30:48is what mentioned.
30:49Ghee is fancy
30:50because probably
30:51she could have heard that.
30:52And again,
30:54as Dr. Isaac told,
30:56Vata people
30:56must use sesame oil,
30:58Pitta people
30:59which is must use ghee
31:00and Kaffa people
31:02must use mustard oil.
31:04How you know that,
31:04I will not ask you
31:05that question.
31:06But last one
31:06for heart health.
31:08Heart health.
31:09So again,
31:10I think
31:11when we talked
31:12about heart,
31:15the best way
31:15is again
31:16Kashmiri single garlic
31:17but methi seeds
31:18in the morning
31:19and a combination
31:20of achvain
31:22and saffron water
31:24at night.
31:25This is amazing.
31:26If you follow
31:26these three,
31:28usually you will
31:29never get into
31:30cholesterol,
31:30heart diseases
31:31and any such
31:32disorder
31:33and obesity as well.
31:34Right.
31:35And your hormones,
31:37the question with hormones.
31:38So there are two
31:39different hormonal variations.
31:42One is younger girls
31:43go for Tulsi,
31:45like have a Tulsi tea,
31:47very tasty,
31:48very aromatic
31:48and elderly,
31:50like menopausal women
31:51eat a pomegranate
31:52every day.
31:53Amazing.
31:54Just amazing.
31:55All right.
31:56Tell me a little bit
31:57about tackling obesity.
32:01We live in the times
32:02of GLP-1 drugs
32:03and weight loss drugs,
32:04right?
32:05Everybody now
32:06has an injection
32:07to put it in.
32:09No food noise.
32:10You don't get the cravings.
32:12You don't even feel
32:13like craving
32:13for all the stuff
32:15you used to like.
32:17No alcohol.
32:18All of that is quiet
32:19and people are losing
32:20tons of weight.
32:22What are your thoughts
32:23on that firstly?
32:24So as Dr. Isaac
32:26was saying,
32:27allopathy,
32:28the research
32:29that is so good,
32:30it's a fantastic science.
32:31But suddenly after
32:32maybe 20 years,
32:34the same researchers
32:36say,
32:37oh, no, no,
32:37we didn't know this.
32:39So these GLP drugs
32:40can cause cancer.
32:42They can cause
32:44Alzheimer's.
32:45They can cause
32:45memory loss.
32:46which can come up
32:47later.
32:48So my suggestion
32:49being an Ayurveda
32:50doctor to all of you
32:51is maintain a healthy
32:53lifestyle.
32:53Don't go there.
32:55Don't try to reach.
32:56They are amazing.
32:57Like say,
32:58an amazing actor
32:59wants to lose weight,
33:00GLP drugs,
33:01Ayurveda can't do
33:01anything for him.
33:02But you,
33:04like you and me,
33:05should not go there
33:06as much as possible.
33:07Have a good lifestyle.
33:09Be healthy.
33:10prevention is always
33:11better than cure.
33:12Yeah.
33:13Dr. Mathai?
33:14It is essential
33:15for a certain
33:16number of people.
33:18Yes.
33:18Especially start
33:19with diabetes.
33:20Yes.
33:20And interestingly,
33:21the Western doctors
33:22in Western countries,
33:24which a lot of the
33:25might treat that
33:25patients,
33:26they prescribe it
33:27only for
33:28really necessary
33:30patients with diabetes
33:31or that kind of
33:33a weight issue
33:34which is damaging
33:35to their other organs
33:36and all that.
33:38Unfortunately,
33:38in India,
33:39in Bangalore,
33:40not only the specialist
33:41is prescribing,
33:42that is official,
33:44even the corner shop
33:45is selling,
33:46calling somebody
33:47and saying,
33:47no, no,
33:47there's a new medicine
33:48in town,
33:49why don't you take it?
33:49It will make you
33:50shape you up.
33:51And it's like
33:53paracetamol is going on.
33:54That is dangerous.
33:55So even the Western
33:56medical approach
33:57of properly doing
33:58for the selected
33:59number of patients
34:00in a proper way
34:01is appropriate.
34:02Side effects
34:02maybe may not be
34:04in the future.
34:05That's okay.
34:06but this vast use
34:09of this especially
34:09country like India
34:10is very dangerous.
34:12Dr. Apoor,
34:13can I ask you this?
34:15There is so much
34:17knowledge that you have
34:18on what to eat,
34:19when to eat,
34:20how to do things.
34:21What does your routine
34:23look like?
34:23What are you having
34:25in the morning?
34:26What kalha is being made
34:28with some bees
34:30and some garlic there?
34:32What is your routine?
34:34I'll tell you
34:34a simple routine.
34:36to be free
34:38from diseases
34:39and I'm 50 now.
34:42So to not get
34:44God's grace,
34:45no diabetes,
34:46no cholesterol,
34:46I'm not on any
34:47medication,
34:48even Ayurveda.
34:49So I think
34:51a simple thing,
34:52wake up early
34:53in the morning.
34:54So early in the morning
34:55doesn't mean 4 a.m.
34:56in the morning.
34:576,
34:58just wake up
34:59with the sun,
35:00have your
35:01methi water,
35:02have your
35:03fenugreek seeds,
35:05have your
35:05room temperature
35:06water
35:07and the first
35:08four hours
35:09of the day,
35:10say up to
35:1110 o'clock,
35:12it's the kapha time.
35:13kapha is earth
35:14and water
35:15in the body.
35:15You're supposed
35:16to exercise
35:17during this time,
35:18you're supposed
35:19to be physically
35:19active during this time,
35:21you're supposed
35:21to eat very less
35:22food during this time,
35:24where we are
35:24usually advocated
35:25to have a heavy
35:26breakfast.
35:27Heavy breakfast,
35:28Ayurveda says no,
35:29a light breakfast
35:30and then get
35:31into your day.
35:33So 10 to 2
35:34is the time
35:34of pitta,
35:35that's a fantastic
35:36time for decision
35:37making.
35:39What should I do?
35:40How should I do?
35:41That's the time,
35:42that's office time,
35:43decision making time
35:44and your heaviest
35:45meal has to be
35:46in the pitta time.
35:47Between 10 to 2
35:48has to be
35:49your heaviest meal.
35:512 to the next
35:52four hours
35:52up till 6 o'clock
35:53is the execution
35:54time because
35:55it is the
35:56vata time.
35:57Whatever your
35:57mind thought,
35:59that's the time
36:00to execute it.
36:01And again
36:02comes the kapha
36:03next four hours,
36:04unwind,
36:05slow,
36:05relax.
36:06And by 10 p.m.,
36:08this is very
36:08interesting,
36:09young people here,
36:1110 to 2 a.m.,
36:1210 p.m. in the
36:13night to 2 a.m.
36:15in the morning
36:15is the pitta time.
36:17You're supposed
36:18to be fast asleep
36:19during this time,
36:20fast asleep.
36:21And this is where
36:22I think hormone
36:23imbalances for girls,
36:25they're scrolling
36:25their internets,
36:26they're seeing
36:27their Instagrams.
36:28So this is the time
36:29you're supposed
36:29to be fast asleep,
36:31this is the pitta
36:32period.
36:34And another
36:35very interesting
36:35thing here,
36:36during this time
36:37your liver
36:38repairs.
36:39If your mind
36:40is active,
36:41where is the
36:41blood rushing
36:42to?
36:42Your mind.
36:44So if you're
36:44asleep,
36:45the blood rushes
36:46to your liver
36:46and repairs
36:47your liver.
36:48That's the
36:48reason why
36:49you're seeing
36:49so many liver
36:50diseases these
36:51days,
36:51even on the
36:52way I saw
36:53liver
36:55biliary clinic
36:56something.
36:56So that's
36:58even with
36:59non-alcoholic
37:00liver disease
37:00that are
37:01non-alcoholic
37:01fatty livers.
37:03So big,
37:03so big.
37:04So please
37:05sleep by
37:0610 o'clock,
37:0710 to 2
37:07should be
37:08your deep
37:08sleep,
37:092 onwards,
37:10the lightest
37:10sleep automatically
37:11comes in,
37:13wake up by
37:136 o'clock,
37:14follow basic
37:15rituals,
37:15eat in
37:16moderation,
37:17control your
37:18carbohydrates
37:18and the
37:19biggest killer,
37:20the biggest
37:21killer,
37:21take it away
37:22from here,
37:23if you can
37:23change one
37:24thing tonight,
37:25stop having
37:26sugar.
37:28Just stop
37:29having sugar,
37:30you will
37:31automatically
37:31get better.
37:33Your health
37:34will automatically
37:34get better.
37:35The sweets,
37:36the sugars,
37:37and I also
37:38advocate,
37:39like say first
37:40stop white
37:41sugar,
37:41then totally
37:42get rid of
37:43jaggery,
37:43next thing
37:44get rid of
37:44fruits as
37:45well.
37:47What?
37:48Did you
37:49just say
37:49get rid of
37:50fruits?
37:51Yes,
37:51I'll tell
37:52you why.
37:53So,
37:53there are
37:54fruits and
37:54there are
37:55vegetables,
37:56but when I
37:56said get
37:57rid of the
37:57fruits,
37:58increase your
37:59vegetables and
38:00eat them
38:01like a
38:01cow,
38:02because both
38:03fruits and
38:03vegetables are
38:04high on
38:04antioxidants,
38:05they are
38:05high on
38:06minerals,
38:07they are
38:07amazing in
38:08fiber,
38:09but why
38:10is the
38:10vegetable
38:11superior?
38:12Because it
38:13doesn't have
38:13sugar.
38:14So,
38:15prefer having
38:16plenty of
38:16vegetables,
38:17plenty means
38:18plenty of
38:19vegetables to
38:19compensate
38:20your fruit
38:21loss,
38:22then target
38:24a time,
38:25like say,
38:25especially in
38:26your 40s,
38:2750s,
38:28that's when
38:28the mid-age
38:29crisis comes
38:30in.
38:31Mid-age crisis
38:32is, oh,
38:32I've gotten
38:33diabetes,
38:33oh, my
38:34blood pressure
38:34is going
38:35high.
38:35That's the
38:36time you
38:36just stop
38:37having sugar,
38:38including
38:38fruit sugar,
38:39exercise
38:40regularly,
38:40cut down
38:41on your
38:41carbohydrates,
38:42you don't
38:42need any
38:43doctor,
38:43including me.
38:44I have
38:44a follow-up
38:45on sugar.
38:45What about
38:46sugar alternatives
38:47like allulose,
38:49like monk
38:49fruit, which
38:50are very
38:50popular these
38:51days?
38:51Instead,
38:52please have
38:52sugar.
38:56All right.
38:57Dr.
38:58Mathai,
38:58as we come
38:59towards the
39:00end, talk
39:00to me a
39:01little bit
39:01about, you
39:03know, we
39:03spoke about
39:04weight loss.
39:05There are two
39:06things that
39:06really impact
39:07every Indian
39:07apart from
39:08clinical issues.
39:09It is, you
39:10know, having
39:11excess fat in
39:12your body and
39:12having very
39:13little hair on
39:14your head.
39:14Is there a
39:15remedy that
39:16you can speak
39:16to us about
39:17for hair loss?
39:18Yes.
39:19If it is an
39:20abnormal hair
39:20loss in early
39:21stages, in
39:22the teenage or
39:23in the middle
39:23age or after
39:24delivery or
39:25anything like
39:25that, there
39:26are proper
39:27medication and
39:28treatments for
39:29that.
39:29And there
39:30are high
39:30oils that are
39:31very efficient
39:32for that.
39:32But again,
39:33hair loss is
39:34not always an
39:35issue with the
39:35hair.
39:36It will be
39:36most of the
39:37time an issue
39:37with the
39:38metabolism.
39:39A lot of
39:39cases, they
39:39will have
39:40some issues
39:40with the
39:41liver.
39:41Not necessarily
39:42disease of
39:42the liver, but
39:43metabolic
39:45imbalances.
39:45So we
39:46have to
39:46correct the
39:46gut and
39:47the intestine
39:48and the
39:48eating habits
39:49and sometimes
39:49at delivery
39:50and such
39:51situation, it
39:52can be
39:52changed.
39:53So we
39:53have to
39:53look at the
39:54root cause
39:54of it and
39:56treat that.
39:57And that
39:58can be changed
39:58both with
39:59Ayurveda and
40:00homeopiric
40:00medicines.
40:02Dr. Prud,
40:02what's your
40:03take on
40:03coffee?
40:05It's so
40:05good.
40:06Yeah?
40:07Like, what's
40:09coffee is a
40:10herb, right?
40:11Tea is a
40:12herb.
40:12No herb can
40:13be harmful
40:13to you.
40:14But what
40:15makes coffee
40:16or a tea
40:16harmful is
40:17the milk and
40:18the sugar in
40:18that.
40:19so if you
40:20adopt a nice
40:21black tea or
40:22maybe a black
40:23coffee, it's
40:24just amazing.
40:25Black coffee
40:25can be a
40:26medicine in
40:27fatty liver if
40:28you have it in
40:29moderation.
40:30Of course, don't
40:31cross two cups a
40:32day, but have
40:33two cups of
40:33black coffee a
40:34day, it'll
40:35help in weight
40:36loss.
40:36It'll help in
40:37fatty liver.
40:38So these are
40:39also herbs.
40:40They're not bad.
40:41But one small
40:43point here,
40:44compatibility and
40:45non-compatibility
40:46is the biggest
40:48issue.
40:48What do you
40:49mean by that?
40:49So compatibility
40:50is a simple
40:51herb by mixing
40:53with other herb
40:54becomes the
40:54greatest of
40:55medicine.
40:56And a simple
40:58herb by mixing
40:59with a non-compatible
41:00thing can become
41:01the biggest
41:02poison.
41:02So what is the
41:03biggest non-compatible
41:05virudh ahar is
41:06the Ayurvedic word
41:07for that.
41:08What is the
41:08biggest virudh ahar
41:10we all generally
41:11eat, especially
41:11delhiites?
41:13Any guess?
41:14Virudh ahar,
41:15non-compatible food?
41:18Palak paneer.
41:20Never mix
41:20palak and paneer
41:21together.
41:22Another, one of
41:23your favorites is
41:24dahi vada.
41:26And what's
41:27another name for
41:28dahi vada?
41:28Dahi bhala.
41:29Dahi bhala.
41:30So never have
41:32udad dal,
41:32urad dal and
41:33dahi, curd
41:35together.
41:36Never have
41:36palak and paneer
41:37together.
41:38It interferes in
41:39the absorption of
41:39the protein and
41:40also of the iron.
41:41It doesn't work
41:42as a pairing.
41:43It doesn't work
41:44after pairing.
41:45Same like coffee
41:46with milk and
41:47sugar, poison.
41:48Tea, milk and
41:49sugar, poison.
41:50Kadak chai, very
41:51dangerous.
41:53All right, on
41:54that note, thank
41:55you so much, Dr.
41:56Aprood and Dr.
41:57Mathai for being
41:57here.
41:58It's been an
41:58eye-opening session
41:59and I love that
42:00you've shared so
42:01many tips with us
42:02that people can
42:02take back home and
42:04actually practice.
42:04Before I let you
42:05go, would you
42:06please be kind
42:07enough to write
42:07what we are doing
42:09here at the
42:09Healthwell Summit as
42:10a health prescription
42:11for India?
42:12If you had to
42:13give one health
42:14prescription for
42:15the country, what
42:16would that be?
42:16Please join me
42:17there.
42:57I might need a little bit of a translation on that one.
43:00Way of life.
43:01Way of life.
43:03Okay.
43:03All right.
43:04Thank you so much.
43:04Ladies and gentlemen, please put your hands together for Dr. Mathai and Dr. Uprood.
43:08Please.
43:09Please.
