Abdul El-Sayed takes a sarcastic swipe at President Donald Trump over rising grocery prices, turning Trump’s “Abdul Ramadan” name gaffe into a sharp joke about the cost of food in America.
Responding to Trump’s remark, El-Sayed joked that groceries have become so expensive under Trump’s leadership that the president might as well tell Americans to observe Ramadan and fast all day. He mocked Trump’s approach to the affordability crisis, saying, “Listen, just fast ALL DAY.”
The pointed remarks highlight growing concerns over grocery prices, inflation and the cost of living under the Trump administration. El-Sayed’s Ramadan joke quickly turns a personal name gaffe into criticism of the administration’s handling of everyday expenses.

00:00I'll go through a metal detector if you'll sit for a lie detector.
00:11Simple.
00:14I got nothing to hide. You've got so much to hide.
00:19My first question, Epstein.
00:31Second question, did you win the 2020 election?
00:37I got to thank a few people here.
00:40Just to the Western Michigan University Miller Auditorium staff, can we give them a round of applause?
00:46Our staff, our security keeping us safe, thank you so much.
00:52Our Union sisters and brothers, we've got UFCW Local 951.
01:00We've got our incredible teachers and paraprofessionals at the MEA.
01:06And we've got our fighting sisters and brothers at the UAW.
01:15I want to say a special thank you to Commissioner Jen Strebs.
01:21Our State Representative Julie Rogers.
01:28State Rep. Dr. Matt Longjohn.
01:34Our emcee and organizer for the day, James Gasper.
01:41And then you heard from some of our incredible speakers, Patrick Cole, an MDP organizer.
01:49The National Director for the Workings Families Party, Maurice Mitchell.
01:57Your Vice Mayor, Drew Duncan.
02:04Commissioner Montez Morales.
02:10President of the National Nurses United, Jamie Brown.
02:17And of course, our incredible, my soon-to-be colleague, Senator Alyssa Slotkin.
02:28She knows a thing or two about sending Mike Rogers back to Florida.
02:35And I'm Abdul El-Sayed and I'm your candidate for U.S. Senate.
02:43Because y'all, it just shouldn't be this hard.
02:46Shouldn't be this hard in the richest, most powerful country in the world to afford a tank of gas.
02:53Shouldn't be this hard to buy a second bag of groceries.
02:56Shouldn't be this hard to see a doctor.
03:00And it shouldn't be this hard to pay your taxes and know that that money is going to be spent
03:06on you and your kids,
03:07rather than dropping bombs on somebody else and their kids.
03:09It shouldn't be this hard.
03:18Now, Kalamazoo, I never set out to be a politician.
03:21That was not part of my life's plan.
03:22All right, my folks gave me an 11-letter first name.
03:26Got sounds that come out of parts of people's throats they don't know they have.
03:30I wanted to be a doctor.
03:32I wanted to be a doctor because I could go 15 hours to my family's native Egypt.
03:37Or 15 minutes from where I grew up.
03:39And either way, I'd cross 10 years difference in life expectancy.
03:44And it shouldn't matter the color of your skin.
03:45It shouldn't matter where you grow up.
03:46It shouldn't matter what you or your parents do for work.
03:48You deserve a long, healthy life in the United States of America.
03:52Isn't that right, President Brown?
03:57Now, I went to medical school to learn how to heal, only to realize that our healthcare system is more
04:02often too interested in billing than healing.
04:06So I went into public health.
04:08Got to rebuild Detroit's health department.
04:10Got to lead Wayne County's Department of Health, Human, and Veterans Services.
04:14We thought outside the box about what public health could be.
04:17We put glasses on kids' faces for free.
04:1916,000 pairs for kids who otherwise wouldn't get a pair of glasses.
04:24Took on some of the biggest corporate polluters in our state.
04:27We forced Marathon Petroleum to invest $10 million of their own money to reduce emissions when they had applied to
04:33increase them.
04:35After Flint, we had every school, daycare, and Head Start tested for lead in the water.
04:4168 schools we tested, 19 of them tested positive for lead.
04:46In Wayne County, we put Narcan in vending machines for free in a hundred different locations.
04:55We built a program to provide free health insurance for new small businesses.
05:00And when we found out that our county ranked number eight for medical debt nationwide,
05:04we set aside $7 million to erase up to $700 million in medical debt for 300,000 families.
05:16But I'm never going to forget that day, sitting in my office, nearly two years ago, feels like ten years
05:21ago now,
05:22when this administration froze federal funds.
05:24Y'all remember that?
05:25I'm trying to get one more round of WIC checks out to moms and babies so they can eat for
05:30a few more weeks.
05:32Trying to make sure that our community health centers don't get shut down.
05:35When I get a notification on my phone that after his two terms in the United States Senate,
05:40our current Senator Gary Peters is not seeking re-election.
05:44There's going to be an open U.S. Senate seat.
05:46And I had to ask myself, where is the fight for the public's health now?
05:50Because if I were to be elected, I'd be the first Democratic doctor elected to the U.S. Senate in
05:54nearly 60 years.
06:00I'd be the first ever public health official elected to the United States Senate.
06:05And if you've ever wondered why RFK Jr. runs public health in this country,
06:08I think we all could agree we probably need a public health senator right about now.
06:16Now, you might have seen the news.
06:20I love you back.
06:24RFK Jr. was in town this week.
06:40And he was here to lecture you.
06:45He wanted to give you a history lesson.
06:48He said that the 500 million Arabs in the world had never contributed anything to science.
07:00But, to be fair, he is an expert on people who've never contributed anything to science.
07:10He wouldn't know science if it smacked them in the face.
07:14And at this point, some of them probably have smacked them in the face.
07:20This is the dude who literally takes his grandkids swimming in Schitt's Creek.
07:41And I just, I find it personally offensive.
07:45That the guy, the guy works out in jeans.
07:51Which means, by definition, he's gotta skip leg day.
07:55Can't be doing leg day in some jeans.
08:02And now, this would all be a laughing matter if in this day all summer we weren't running around trying
08:08to dodge lettuce.
08:16If you can afford it, right?
08:20Does everybody, everybody have to worry about the shit lettuce epidemic.
08:26He didn't bother to show up when 8,000 people were infected by the shit lettuce.
08:33But he wants to come here and lecture you about potentially electing an Arab American to the U.S. Senate.
08:40And here's the funny thing about it.
08:42My guy has zero doctorates.
08:44I got two of them.
08:51And I'll tell you this.
08:55You don't have to have gone to medical school to know that you don't want people to eat the lettuce
09:00that has been shat upon.
09:01That's the bad lettuce.
09:03You don't want that.
09:04But this is what happens when you doge the part of government that is supposed to protect you from that
09:10lettuce.
09:12That's what happens.
09:14And we all suffered the consequences.
09:17And the CDC couldn't even count it.
09:19Michigan's numbers were 2,000 cases higher than the CDC's.
09:25That's the legacy of appointing RFK Jr. to run our public health agencies.
09:31So yeah, I think we probably could use, probably could use a public health senator right about now.
09:42But y'all, you know this is not my first rodeo.
09:46I ran for governor back in 2018.
09:48Some of you supported me.
09:50Not nearly enough of you.
09:55To be fair, I was 32 years old.
09:57I'd never run for office in my life.
09:58I said, you know, I'm gonna go big or go home.
10:00I went big and then I went home.
10:02But I said something in that race folks weren't quite ready to hear.
10:05Which is that Donald Trump is not himself the disease of our politics.
10:09Donald Trump is the worst symptom of the disease of our politics.
10:13The disease is the system that allows corporations and billionaires and special interests and oligarchs to buy and sell politicians
10:20in ways that leave them rigging the system against us.
10:24It's why we pay more for all we gotta buy.
10:27We get paid less for the work we do.
10:29And we watch as our tax dollars get misspent.
10:34To drop bombs on other people and their kids rather than to build schools and healthcare and opportunity for our
10:39own.
10:41So y'all, back in April of 2025, we kicked off a campaign to do three simple things.
10:47Y'all already know what they are.
10:48Money out of?
10:49Money.
10:50Money in your?
10:51Money in.
10:51Medicare for?
10:52And we took that campaign everywhere.
10:55700 public events.
10:57120 cities.
11:00And we said the same thing everywhere we went.
11:03Didn't matter if you saw me in a room of five or 25 or 500 or 2,000.
11:10Didn't matter if you saw me on an Instagram reel or a TikTok.
11:13Didn't matter if you heard me on a podcast.
11:16Didn't matter if you saw me getting a colonoscopy on CNN.
11:20I was saying the same thing.
11:22Talking about the same set of issues.
11:24Talking about why in the state that showed us what unions could do that we've got to stand for union
11:31rights again.
11:34Talking about the notion that in the government of the people, by the people, and for the people, corporations and
11:41special interests shouldn't be able to dictate our politics to us.
11:46Talking about keeping our tax dollars here to provide schools here and healthcare here rather than send it abroad to
11:51do the worst things over there.
11:57Talking about why in the richest country in the history of the world you deserve the guarantee of healthcare through
12:05Medicare for All.
12:15Now we knew, we knew they were going to spend some money against us.
12:18I remember when we kicked off the campaign we said they're going to spend $20 million to beat me.
12:23That was the, we were young and dumb back then.
12:2720 million turned into 40 million, 60 million, 70 million dollars in the primary alone.
12:33We got outspent 11 to 1.
12:35They set a record for the amount of money spent in a single primary campaign anywhere in American history.
12:42And guess what?
12:44They might as well have set their money on fire because we beat them anyway.
12:52Because if you've got to choose between the many and their money, pick the many.
12:59If you've got to choose between the politics of the people or the politics of the special interests, pick the
13:07politics of the people.
13:12We find ourselves now with just five days left until this movement that we've been building for 19 months reaches
13:22its crest.
13:24You can do it.
13:25We can do it.
13:27It's all of us.
13:28And, you know, given the fact that we're spending nearly $5 a gallon in gas and our groceries are more
13:41expensive than we've ever seen,
13:44you'd think that their campaign might want to mention gas or groceries.
13:51But instead, they just want to point to me and be like, he's Muslim.
13:55Y'all, let me just tell you.
13:57I am Muslim.
14:04And I'm an American who believes in the Constitution and that that shouldn't matter.
14:10Because it doesn't matter how you pray or if you pray at all.
14:14We all believe in an America big enough for all of us.
14:20Unless, of course, unless, of course, you are the president or vice president.
14:31Because if you haven't noticed, they can't seem to keep my name out their mouth.
14:38Donald Trump can't seem to figure out what my name is.
14:42Abdul.
14:48Now he's taking a calling me Muhammad.
14:51The funny thing about it is Abdul means servant.
14:53Muhammad means the praised one.
14:56I'm like, alright, bro.
14:57You want to take me from servant to the praised one, I'm okay with it.
15:04You might have heard just recently, he called me Abdul Ramadan.
15:13Now, if you don't know this, Ramadan is the month in which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.
15:22I mean, the thing about it is, groceries under his leadership have gotten so expensive,
15:29I wouldn't be surprised if he's like, listen, we could just do Ramadan for all.
15:33That's Donald Trump's approach to groceries.
15:36Groceries got too expensive.
15:38Listen, just fast all day.
15:40I'm trying to bring your groceries down.
15:45Abdul Ramadan.
15:48It's about to be Trump Ramadan soon.
16:01Why are you fasting?
16:02I can't afford food.
16:20And then, here's the thing, I don't know if you saw this.
16:27Just recently, he said, he said that I should have to go through a metal detector.
16:34It's alright, man, he took that Wolverine thing seriously.
16:36He knows I got claws.
16:44But here's the deal, Donald.
16:45Listen, I'll go through a metal detector if you'll sit for a lie detector.
16:57Simple.
17:00I got nothing to hide.
17:02You've got so much to hide.
17:05My first question, Epstein.
17:17Second question, did you win the 2020 election?
17:24So that's the deal.
17:26I'll go through a metal detector every day.
17:28You sit through a lie detector one time.
17:31That's the deal.
17:37That's the thing about it is, you know, the only reason that they do this is because they're con men.
17:47And the thing about the con is, when they're deceiving you, they're picking your pocket.
17:51That's how this works.
17:54And then, I don't know if you saw this,
17:57Donald Trump was supposed to come to Michigan again.
18:01He came, he came last Sunday.
18:03He wanted you to know something, okay?
18:05So let me just faithfully relay this to you.
18:09He wants you to know that he's on the ballot.
18:12Okay?
18:13He wants you to vote like he's on the ballot.
18:16So Kalamazoo,
18:19on Tuesday,
18:20I want you to vote like Donald Trump is on the ballot.
18:25Because Donald Trump is on the ballot.
18:29His war in Iran is on the ballot.
18:34His tariff war is on the ballot.
18:36His big ugly bill is on the ballot.
18:45Now,
18:48Trump though,
18:50he realized that this was probably not helping.
18:52So instead, he canceled all his next rallies and he's just gonna go home to Mar-Lago.
19:03and we're about to normalize
19:06con men politicians
19:07going back home to Florida
19:21but you know there's always
19:23someone in that group that's thirsty for attention
19:27they keep sending that
19:29that Ohio State Buckeye here
19:33what's his name
19:34JV Dance
19:37they keep sending JV here
19:43and asking
19:44and asking JV to do the dirty work
19:47but that's the thing about it
19:49JV's got zero charisma
19:52they taught him that at Ohio State
19:56when your school mascot's like a nut
19:58what do you expect
20:06JV Dance
20:11but here's the thing about it
20:13y'all
20:14they can keep saying my name
20:15they can keep pointing to my faith
20:18my name and my faith are not the reason
20:19you can't afford your grass
20:20and your groceries
20:22my name and my faith are not the reason
20:24you can't afford your gas
20:26my name and my faith are not the reason
20:28you can't see a doctor
20:30I mean chances are if you're seeing a doctor
20:31they might actually have my name and my faith
20:40you laugh so you don't cry
20:44it is their policies that are doing that
20:47it is their Iran war
20:49that is the reason you can't afford your gas and your groceries
20:52it's their tariff war with Canada
20:55which is the reason you can't afford anything else
20:58it is their big ugly bill
20:59that is making it harder for you to see a doctor
21:02and the reason they don't want to talk about any of it
21:04is because they can't do anything to fix it
21:14and beyond that I just don't think it's going to work
21:16see I know what my name is
21:20for most of my life I thought that meant
21:21that there was no world I could ever consider running for office
21:24my college graduation
21:26I was the senior speaker at the University of Michigan
21:28the main speaker was Bill Clinton
21:30and look I gave my speech
21:32President Clinton gives his speech
21:33he comes up to me afterwards
21:34he said
21:34son why are you going to medical school
21:36I'm like I'm brown and Muslim so we do
21:41but I love people and I love science
21:42he said that's great
21:43but you got a gift for communicating
21:44maybe someday you're on for office
21:45I laughed in his face
21:48I was like Mr. President
21:49people like me don't get to run for office
21:50do you see my name?
21:51it's very long
21:58he kind of thought about it for a second
22:01then he chuckled and walked away
22:02that was 2007
22:052008
22:05I watched Barack Hussein Obama run for and win the presidency
22:17I got to spend some time with President Obama on Saturday
22:22he was here supporting our campaign
22:25and I got to tell him what it meant to see him do what he did
22:30but in some respects he had the same
22:34confirmed the same understanding that I've always had
22:37when you got a name that's uncommon
22:40your family comes from a place that's uncommon
22:43you're not taking a bet on you and your name
22:46that's not the bet I've ever taken
22:47the bet I'm taking is on Michigan
22:52when they say
22:54how are you going to vote for a guy named Abdul
22:56they're not talking about me
22:58you understand
22:59you know what they're talking about
23:01they're talking about you
23:03and that's the part that bothers me
23:05because I've had the privilege of traveling this state
23:08for the last 19 months
23:10been invited to
23:12living rooms and backyards
23:18I was at his backyard
23:21churches
23:23synagogues
23:24I've been all over the state
23:27and people
23:28people
23:29here in Michigan
23:30they take our differences
23:32as an invitation for a conversation
23:35and I know
23:36that there's always a few small people
23:37who want to make us small like them
23:39they speak loudly
23:41because they want you to think
23:43that they speak for everybody
23:44but they don't
23:45the vast majority
23:46of folks in our state
23:49open hearted
23:50big minded
23:51they want to understand
23:53what you're about
23:54what is it that you want to do
23:56and how can we do that thing together
23:58so as I've traveled this state
23:59I've seen the best of Michigan
24:00people who want a big Michigan
24:03earnest and gritty
24:06we here in Michigan
24:07we understand
24:08that we're willing to work hard
24:10very few people in the world work harder
24:12than Michiganders
24:13and we're earnest
24:16we give the best
24:18and we expect the best
24:20we just don't want our hard work
24:21exploited by a billionaire
24:23from New York
24:23or a millionaire from Florida
24:31and as I've been able to travel
24:33this state
24:34and meet folks
24:36in their communities
24:37I realize just how big we are
24:39we understand something
24:41the union movement taught us that
24:44that solidarity
24:47solidarity is an act
24:50solidarity is about reaching
24:51across your divides
24:52not despite
24:53but because of your differences
24:54see we can have nice things
24:56we just can't do it alone
24:58the only way we get those nice things
25:00is by reaching together for them
25:03covering one another's weaknesses
25:05and flaws
25:06to build together something
25:07we can't have alone
25:09that has been the story
25:10story of solidarity
25:12from the jump
25:13it's what built the middle class
25:15built the 40 hour work week
25:16built the fact that our kids go to school
25:19it's what can build that again
25:21our willingness to reach across the divides
25:24that they tell us we can't breach
25:25divides of geography
25:27or race
25:28or faith
25:28or sexual orientation
25:29or gender identity
25:30building together
25:32what we can't have alone
25:34that is the story
25:35of Michigan
