00:00I'm Lucy Fink and this week is five days of switching up my routine.
00:04What's up guys? Welcome back to Try Living with Lucy. This is like episode
00:0987. I don't know. This week is about to get interesting because it's all about
00:15taking my life as we know it and flipping it on its head. So every day this
00:20week is going to be dedicated to completely shaking up one aspect of my
00:26life. I wanted to start off on Monday with perhaps the most blatant switch up so I
00:31asked myself what is the one thing about a person that immediately upon viewing
00:36them you would notice is different? Their style. I'm never quite sure how to
00:40verbally describe what my style is and I get that question a lot but I just don't
00:45think I'm fashionable enough to know a term to describe my style. I'm pretty casual
00:50all the time. I don't wear a lot of fancy things. I like flats and very
00:54comfortable clothing and given my job as a lifestyle producer who's pretty much
00:58always on the go, I do not have the ability to be dressing up in fancy clothes
01:03all the time. But today we're changing it up and I'm getting trendy. So my friend
01:08from Refinery29, Sam Richmond, came to my apartment this morning and she bought a
01:12few outfit options for me. All non Lucy outfits. Okay. Some really cool culottes.
01:17I've definitely never worn a culottes. Love that. Doesn't feel very me but I love
01:22the color. Back to the point. Each outfit option had some elements to it that were
01:26just completely new to me fashion wise and my personal favorite options were the
01:30red flare pants and the short mini skirt. But you got to remember this video is
01:35all about my anti-routines so it's not about picking out the outfit that I liked
01:39the most and felt the most comfortable in. It was about picking out the outfit that I
01:43put on and thought hmm. I wound up choosing the mid-length wrap skirt with a mix match
01:48pattern top. But I did switch it up a bit and I threw the trench coat from the other
01:52outfit over this one. And then I also wore high heels. To make it a little different I
01:58was also wearing glasses all day. But since I typically wear contact lenses and not glasses,
02:03putting on my glasses gives me a whole different look. I even bumped into my friend Julie in the park
02:08and she seemed to like the outfit.
02:10New jacket? New clothes? New everything. Do you like it? Wow. I love it. I mean it's a little out
02:14there for you but it works.
02:16Oh my god thanks Jewel. Anytime Lou. And when I got to work it was a bit of a struggle.
02:20Today was a pretty hectic day on set. I was gathering a lot of equipment. I was
02:24holding heavy gear and I was doing all this in not only a pretty uncomfortable
02:28outfit but also high heels. And that was not fun. But to think that you have so much
02:34power over your daily aura just by picking something that's a little bit
02:38different and that's gonna make people see you and think ooh fresh new exciting.
02:43That's cool. There's a lot of power in that wardrobe.
02:48My second attempt at switching up my routine was pretty ridiculous. It was all
02:53about my makeup routine. As you might know from watching previous episodes of the
02:57series I typically don't wear that much makeup. My daily look is pretty natural and
03:02simple and that's mostly because I like it that way but it's also slightly
03:06because I don't really know how to do makeup. But today I followed an Instagram
03:11beauty tutorial and I attempted to make my face look the way all of those
03:16Instagram beauty bloggers look. Super made up using a ton of makeup products
03:20that I've never even heard of. Surprise! This is how I look right now.
03:25I got home from the office and I took the look off pretty quickly because I
03:29started to sense some breakout action beginning. But because I know you're
03:33interested in my anti-Lucy beauty routine here's what I did. I started out
03:37with a clean face and I first applied some moisturizing drops. Then after a
03:41full face of foundation and concealer put in specific spots I baked my face as
03:48they say. And I didn't know this was a term but apparently people use the term
03:52baking their face for when they put that powder on and they let it all set. And I
03:57did that while I focused on my eyelids and I did eyeshadow and liner. Very
04:01intense look. Very intense. I filled in my eyebrows, I added some fake lashes, I
04:07bronzed up my cheek a bit with some contouring, I added highlighter, blush, made my
04:13lips drastically bigger than they are and then I filled them in with some matte lip gloss.
04:17This look was anti-Lucy in just every way possible. I'm not kidding, it took almost
04:23an hour to get that onto my face. So bless the people who do that every day. Bless them.
04:29Wearing all of this makeup today had me feeling a little interesting because on the one hand
04:33any potential blemish or flaw or anything on my real skin that I wanted to hide was
04:38completely covered and hidden away. But on the other hand I felt that I stood out like a sore thumb
04:44and not
04:44necessarily in a good way. But I know that this day has inspired me to try five days of
04:49glam makeup because I need to live this every single day for five days in a row to
04:54really gauge how I feel about this. And now I'm peeling it off. Careful now. Almost there.
05:08We did it. Ew.
05:15Over the weekend when I was thinking about what aspects of my life are set in the biggest routine,
05:20food was one of the first things that came to mind. Because even though I'm not the type of person
05:25that eats the same thing every day, there is one thing that's pretty consistent in my food life.
05:30And that is, I like to order in and pick up takeout.
05:34So to make today more exciting and to break out of my typical mold, I decided that everything I'm
05:39going to eat, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is going to be cooked at home in my kitchen by Chef Lucie.
05:46So now the question is, what did I make? Well, I wanted to make sure that each of my meals
05:51had some
05:52element to them that was completely fresh and new and something I hadn't done before.
05:56Number one, breakfast. I am no stranger to bagels. I could have a bagel pretty much every single morning.
06:02But I can't remember the last time that I cooked a bagel at home, let alone a gourmet bagel.
06:09So I stole my twin sister's recipe for this and I toasted a bagel.
06:14I spread on some laughing cow cheese. And then I toasted up some vegan bacon bits and sprinkled them on
06:21top.
06:28For lunch, I made deconstructed tacos with a twist.
06:32Tacos are also nothing new to me, but I did challenge myself to make them in a new and fresh
06:37way.
06:37Firstly, using mushrooms instead of meat. And secondly, by assembling the tacos in a jar.
06:43I first layered corn, tomato, red onion, and lettuce in a mason jar.
06:48And then on the side, I sliced up a portobello mushroom into strips.
06:51I put it in a bowl with some olive oil and various seasonings.
06:54And then I sauteed it in a skillet with some cilantro and a few pieces of a very, very spicy
07:00pepper.
07:04I put the mushrooms into a separate jar and then I brought both of the jars plus two corn tortillas
07:09to work.
07:10And tonight, I just got home from work, so I'm about to change out of this and put on my
07:14pajamas.
07:14And then I'm cooking dinner for me and Michael.
07:16I'm making salmon with a side of a kale, black bean, and avocado salad.
07:20And this is a recipe that was in my bullet journal last year that was just sitting there waiting to
07:25be made.
07:26I decided to stop putting it off and just cook it already.
07:29When you cook all of your meals for yourself, everything about your whole day just feels different.
07:34You're being crafty, you're working with what you've got, you're changing things up on the fly.
07:38This whole day to me felt like an entire celebration of art, color, food, and creativity.
07:44There is something special about food, I'm telling you.
07:50In order to really switch up something big about my life, I asked myself,
07:54what is the one thing that the foundation of my entire day is built around?
07:59Sleep.
08:01Sleep!
08:02My regular sleeping routine is like most adult humans.
08:06I get between six to eight hours of sleep every night, one entire chunk of unconsciousness in a row.
08:12But after doing some research into alternative sleep cycles, I realized that we adult humans are pretty much the only
08:17ones that do it this way.
08:19Most animals don't settle down for a third of the day and just sleep straight through.
08:24Instead, they alternate between periods of waking and sleeping, just like human babies.
08:28I did the math, and this is very interesting math.
08:31If you sleep eight hours a night, you are cumulatively only awake for roughly 243.3 days out of the
08:39365 days in a year.
08:41I'm not trying to sleep less or for fewer hours, I'm just trying to sleep for different hours in the
08:46day
08:46to see if changing up that typical sleep routine where I get all the sleep in one chunk perhaps makes
08:51me feel more productive.
08:52So last night, to set myself up for some intermittent napping today, I set my alarm for 5am and I
08:58went to bed at midnight.
08:59I woke up early this morning, I made my coffee, I got to work right away,
09:03and truthfully I was feeling pretty groggy after only five hours of sleep, but remember the plan was to get
09:09a total of eight.
09:09So since I had already gotten five, I needed three more and I decided that to get these three hours
09:14of sleep,
09:15I was going to take two separate one and a half hour naps throughout the course of the day.
09:20The first nap came at 9am.
09:22I got to work nice and early and it was completely empty.
09:25Thankfully I have a donut float next to my desk.
09:28Don't ask me why.
09:28So I tried to get comfortable on it, but it was a little bit difficult.
09:31I wound up moving around a lot.
09:34Jeez.
09:35And I eventually settled on the floor, very surprising,
09:38and a co-worker came in around 10.30.
09:41She shook me and I got up.
09:43I was a little startled at first, but then I got back to work.
09:46At 1pm it was time for my second nap of the day and for this one I just decided to
09:50stay out in the open.
09:51We have some nice couches at Refinery29.
09:53Almost immediately I felt totally unprofessional.
09:57I was like, what am I doing?
09:58You can't just nap in the middle of the office.
09:59So eventually I just picked up a bean bag and I started dragging it down the hall
10:03and I was looking for a little bit more of a private space to do this in.
10:07And then I had a genius idea.
10:08My friend Ron, who is an editor at Refinery, has a really small, really dark, warm, and cozy office.
10:14And so I knocked on his door, he let me in, I dragged the bean bag in,
10:18and I just crashed right next to him while he was doing his work.
10:21And even though I didn't get the full amount, I did nap each time.
10:23I'm not a huge napper to begin with, so maybe this is just like some people wake up from naps
10:27refreshed
10:28and other people wake up groggy.
10:30I'm a groggy waker, I guess.
10:31This is more of a, you should try this thing if you want to try it,
10:35but know that your body is going to feel completely different.
10:37And if it makes you feel good, then you should do it.
10:40And if it makes you feel like this, you probably shouldn't.
10:46Today was all about ditching my typical Friday routine, which would have been work, work, work, work, work,
10:52to do something completely new.
10:55I asked myself, what is one thing, Lucy, that you've never done before that you can do right here in
11:00New York?
11:01And somehow, that led me to a giant rock climbing wall.
11:05After some light stretching, and some practice free climbing with no ropes,
11:11we were ready to give it a go.
11:14Hey, bud.
11:16Hey.
11:16How's it going?
11:17Good, you?
11:18How do people do this on actual rocks?
11:20It was not easy.
11:24This is insane.
11:27Dang.
11:27Damn it.
11:28Good job.
11:28That was good.
11:29High five.
11:30After just one climb to the top, our forearms had never been so sore,
11:35and our entire bodies felt like we had just done a full body, high intensity interval training workout.
11:41What a day.
11:42But overall, it was incredibly fun, a little bit scary,
11:46and definitely a very different way to spend our morning.
11:50This week has been especially cool for me because it's one thing to change up one routine in your life,
11:56but to actually pinpoint multiple routines and change them up all in one week feels very fresh and fun.
12:02Getting out of the mundane motions that you go through in your everyday life helps make your life way more
12:07exciting,
12:08and you only have one life to live.
12:10So try as many new things as you possibly can.
12:13So try as many new things as you possibly can.
12:16Developing the circuit one of the surgeries that you could get there to gotta avoid with at least sunny surgeries.
12:16And by the wind itself, my heart ratio is changing.
12:16So try as many o's腳' drawing.
