00:03Hi, I'm New York City based artist Karis Reed and I'm here today with Refinery29 to show you
00:09how to make an easy DIY holiday card that doubles as artwork and has a special added bonus. What
00:15you need to get started are magazines. I chose vintage magazines, but you can use any magazines
00:19that inspire you. Tape, scissors, glue, vinyl lettering, and cardstock. I have mine cut into
00:26circles and squares. So I'm going to go through my vintage magazine and look for things that
00:31inspire me. Sometimes I find solid blocks of color that I like to cut into shapes and other
00:37times I look for imagery that catches my attention. Once you've selected some pieces, get some
00:43general cuts. And don't worry so much about the composition, that comes in later. Once
00:50I have some shapes selected, I cut them out more closely. It's nice to have colors and
00:55patterns cut into abstract shapes for your collage. Once you have a good amount of things cut
01:01out, both shapes and images, it's nice to look at what you have and start arranging them into
01:06setups. So I'm going to take some of the red shapes I cut out and use them to juxtapose
01:14some black and white imagery from the vintage magazine. Part of the fun of collage is the
01:19unexpected combinations that happen. So once you've made your arrangements, it's time to glue.
01:24You can use glue sticks, but I like to use Mod Podge. And when you use Mod Podge, you're
01:30also going to need a brush. And then take things and flip them in reverse to start painting.
01:42Hold down lightly the pieces in place as you glue them. It can be a little messy, so it's good
01:49to have
01:50some paper to put down to protect your work surface. And when you place the objects back on the card,
01:56keep in mind that they're wet, so you want to be very careful.
02:04Once you've made your cards, it's nice to add a little message on the back. You could do that with
02:10marker or pen, but I like to use vinyl lettering. I feel like vinyl lettering has like a certain
02:16DIY spirit to it, which is nice.
02:30I think it's a really nice gift to give money to a great cause over the holidays. And these cards
02:36give a little personal touch to that donation. So there you have it, an easy and fun DIY holiday project.
02:42So, one that you might do for those who go through a days after you enjoy.
02:45You know what's going through.
02:46I don't know.
02:46That's about terms of 평aisers.
02:47I'm bad, I just check much.
02:47Remember how bad it is.
