00:00Hi, I'm Sarah, and I have definitely lied to impress people.
00:04We all want to impress our peers, people we like, and it often starts with a little white
00:08lie.
00:09I would definitely lie to impress.
00:11No, I would not lie to impress anybody.
00:14I'll lie if it's easy, I'll lie if I sound cool, I'll lie to sound smarter.
00:19I'm very embarrassed to say that I've definitely lied to impress someone.
00:23I would never, ever lie to impress.
00:26Ever.
00:27Asking me if I've ever lied to impress somebody is like asking if this guy is green.
00:32No it's not, and no, I have not.
00:35I was 15, and I was really into this guy, and he happened to be super into extreme rollerblading.
00:43In an effort to impress him, I was like, yeah, totally, I'm super into that too.
00:48The biggest one that I've told that I remember was throughout high school, I told people to
00:54sound cool that I had smoked a bunch of weed before, but it became a problem for me, so
01:00I quit.
01:01I had never tried weed before, I had never even seen weed before.
01:04I convinced someone that I learned how to French kiss because I practiced with my brother.
01:09Why that's impressive to literally anyone or why I thought it was, I don't know.
01:14He was saying, oh, let's go to this skate park, I can show you tricks, and me not knowing
01:19anything about it, I had to lie to get out of hanging out with him.
01:23I would tell him I was grounded or that I couldn't hang out with him because I was busy at
01:30school,
01:30and it just made me super paranoid because I was telling him all these lies, and I was
01:36so worried that I was going to run into him and he was going to call me out.
01:39And I thought I saw his car coming down the hill, and just my bare instincts to avoid telling
01:47him the truth was just to run away and hide.
01:51When I go back home to Peru to visit family, I'm a whole different person than I am right
01:56now.
01:56Like, I lie about almost everything.
01:59They want to hear cool stories about their cousin who lives in New York.
02:02I go out every night, I see celebrities.
02:05My older cousin, right before he came, he was messaging me on Facebook, he was like, oh,
02:09Daniel, I'm so excited to see you, we're going to go out in the city, we're going to take
02:13me to all those clubs you've been telling me about, and I was like, oh man, I really hope
02:18my fake ID works this time.
02:20The lie escalated really because I was trying to impress this, like, girl.
02:24She was like, you want to come over and smoke weed?
02:25And I was such a goody two-shoes kid that I didn't want to, but I did want to, but
02:30I
02:30was like, no, I don't really smoke much anymore, I used to smoke a lot, but I don't.
02:34So she took out the weed, and we smoked, and I coughed.
02:38I was like, yeah, this is good stuff, man.
02:40This is like crazy, like, I know my, this is good stuff.
02:44And she was like, this is your first time, and I went, yeah.
02:47I tried to take him to a barcade that I usually always go to, but of course, this time, there
02:53was like a bouncer I'd never seen before, and my fake ID just gets denied, like, not
02:57even, like, doesn't even give me a chance, just looks at the ID and goes like, nah, bro,
03:01not today.
03:01I shamefully had to walk away and tell my cousin, who doesn't even understand English,
03:07like, oh yeah, this barge is not, it's not having it today.
03:11It's just a complete fail.
03:12We didn't end up doing anything that night, but I took him out to get some Chipotle that
03:16they don't have in Peru, and I guess that was really the only highlight of the day.
03:20It's so much easier to tell the truth, and to be honest, if someone doesn't like you for
03:25being yourself, then it wasn't meant to be.
03:27Stop trying so hard, just relax, talk to people as yourself.
03:31If they don't like you as you, they're not going to like you as you lying about yourself.
03:35I want people in my life to accept me for who I am, so therefore, I am not going to
03:39lie
03:39to impress somebody, because then I am not being myself, and I love myself, I'm great.
