On the ISS, a haircut can take two people: one uses clippers while the other holds a nearby hose to catch loose hair. The hose leads to a vacuum cleaner. In microgravity, cut hairs do not simply fall, and cabin ventilation does not remove them quickly enough. Here, “vacuum” means the cleaner in the station’s pressurized cabin—not the vacuum of space.

The astronauts, haircut, and equipment shown are original illustrations, not NASA archival footage.
