The electric Porsche Macan 4 is meant to answer a simple question: can a battery-powered SUV still feel like a real Porsche? In this test drive and review, the new Macan is pushed through motorway cruising, rough B-roads and tight corners to see how sporty, desirable and usable it really is.

The video compares the second-generation, electric-only Macan with the old combustion model and looks at the key specs, styling changes and everyday practicality. It covers the 100 kWh battery, claimed range, real-world energy use, charging speeds, rear-wheel steering, ride quality, driver assistance, interior screens, storage, boot space and the small frunk. There is also a look at towing, ground clearance and how the car behaves on twisty roads.

If you are researching a luxury electric SUV, a Porsche EV review, or simply want a detailed real-world road test, this is a useful watch. It is especially relevant for viewers comparing the Macan 4 with other premium electric crossovers, or looking for an honest take on comfort, performance and charging.

00:00porsche the brand enthusiasts associate with the 911 sports car these days actually sells mainly
00:07suvs the mid-size luxury suv cayenne and the compact macan are porsche's best sellers with
00:14experience gained thanks to the electric only model tycan the stuttgart based car maker decided
00:19to electrify the macan this is the porsche macan 4 electric is it any good let's find out
00:57this is the porsche macan the stuttgart
01:10in some markets porsche still sells the internal combustion engine macan which is yet another
01:15facelift of the first generation model the second generation is electric only and it is available
01:20as the macan macan4 macan4s and the macan turbo this nomenclature is supposed to allow the clients
01:29better grasp what they're actually paying for we can argue if an ev should have a turbo in its name
01:34but it's what porsche decided for the tycan launch and they're sticking with it on the macan
01:41performance is more or less the same as in the ice models so the macan which is rear-wheel drive
01:46only
01:46has similar performance to the old two liter macan macan4 is more or less the macan s macan 4s is
01:53about the same as the gts and the turbo is well any guesses like the turbo the new macan is
02:02some
02:02six centimeters longer than the first generation model and it measures about 478 centimeters in
02:07length it's only about a centimeter wider at just shy of 194 centimeters without mirrors it's also
02:15about two and a half centimeters taller at 162 centimeters the wheelbase is now almost nine
02:21centimeters longer that's more than 289 centimeters the front track is almost four centimeters wider
02:28while the rear track increased by a modest two millimeters
02:33visually the new macan stands out mainly thanks to the redesigned headlights the signature four spot
02:39day running lights similar to those on the tycan remained on top of the front while the proper
02:44headlights are now lower probably to fill the void after the grille which is now a relatively small air
02:50intake at the bottom just enough to cool the batteries from the profile we can see shorter
02:56overhangs a result of extended wheelbase and the rear window is at an acuter angle more acute acuter can you
03:03say acuter anyway it's probably for improved aerodynamics the rear view also shows more of a coupe look than a
03:11hatchback which the macan almost was but the rear lamps and the rear light bar running across the tailgate
03:18are similar to that in the previous generation after facelift facelift facelift facelift oh and there's no exhaust obviously
03:38the porsche macan 4 as the name suggests has all-wheel drive it's slightly more powerful than the base 360
03:44horsepower macan the macan 4 has up to 408 horsepower with launch control under normal circumstances there
03:51is just 378 horsepower to play with
03:56porsche claim the macan 4 will do 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 5.2 seconds i checked and
04:03i got 5.4 seconds
04:05in sport plus mode with launch control and five and a half seconds in normal mode usually internal combustion
04:12engine porsches get better results than spec but evs are sometimes affected by factors which we don't
04:19think of it was about plus eight degrees celsius i don't know what's the recommended traction battery
04:24temperature and its minimum state of charge to achieve full performance the macan regardless of the
04:30version can tow up to two tons and the hitch weight rating is 80 kilograms the car can also take
04:37up to 75
04:38kilograms on the roof as long as you order the roof rails
04:44it takes a while to get used to the electric macan and to understand how it behaves right after picking
04:50up the car i drove it for about 200 kilometers about a third of which was on dual carriageways and
04:56the
04:56rest was on b roads
05:00regardless of the type of the road driver aids work superbly
05:04that is they aid rather than disturb it's relatively easy to configure what's supposed to be on and
05:10what should remain off and the heads-up display with augmented reality helps better understand the
05:15situation on the road visibility is good
05:23it was a windy day so even at relatively low speed there was some considerable wind noise on the expressways
05:30but regardless of the wind noise i could also hear trucks i was overtaking
05:34that's despite the optional sound absorbing windows
05:38soundproofing adds cost and weight so what drowned in the engine and exhaust noise in the ice macan
05:45here can only be masked with sounds from the speaker and i'm referring to the optional burmeister audio system
05:51not the porsche electric sport sound i understand porsche experimented a bit with the tycan but
05:57five years later is this what the finest automotive brains couldn't could come up with
06:05also this futuristic speaker fart costs 452 euro at pay to have it removed
06:14artificial sound is on by default in sport and sport plus modes but can be disabled or it can be
06:19enabled
06:20in normal mode which i advise against anyway the point is that the electric macan could be better
06:28soundproofed especially if every now and then it will get driven on the motorway
06:37on b roads the macan is very sensitive to bad road surface wide tires catch every hole in every rut
06:44and they don't always fit because of the width the chassis and the suspension are very stiff so the
06:50car jolts at times the macan 4 with passengers and luggage weighs about two and a half tons
06:56you can feel the weight when overtaking i imagine porsche chose to leave some performance for the turbo
07:02but the brakes are superb slowing down i don't feel the car's heft as much as i do upon acceleration
07:09the macan becomes surprisingly light on twisty roads all of a sudden it feels quick and agile this test
07:15unit has the optional rear wheel steering which allows it to take corners tighter and at speed it aids
07:21stability in these conditions the chassis rigidity is more than welcome
07:31exiting sharp turns the macan can even slightly oversteer
07:36of course the traction control intervenes instantly so fun is over before the driver can put on any
07:42opposite lock traction control can not i'm not sure be disabled completely in its limited setting it
07:49allows for some slip but it's rather to prevent unnecessary slowing down in fast corners than to
07:55encourage drifting so when necessary the macan rides and handles like a porsche should and i imagine the
08:02more powerful models allow for a bit more fun after all the macan 4 will most likely do school and
08:07shopping
08:07runs
08:12speaking of everyday driving regardless of the power output the macan has a traction battery with 100
08:18kilowatt hours gross or 95 kilowatt hours net capacity the wltp range is between 641 kilometers
08:26for the rear wheel drive macan and 590 for the macan turbo the macan 4 should be able to cover
08:32up to 612 kilometers the claimed energy consumption is between 18 and 21 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers
08:41we don't need advanced mathematics to calculate that optimistic range in this case is less than 530
08:47kilometers and up to 450 on the lower end theoretically recuperation might help boost efficiency
08:54the macan can regenerate up to 240 kilowatts upon braking as long as the battery state of charge
09:00temperature and other factors align in your favor the problem is that in order to regain so much energy
09:06one would have to be driving quite fast and brake with forces that stop the earth turning and this will
09:12negatively impact energy consumption in the first place realistically on my 200 kilometer long road
09:18trip i managed to get the energy consumption down to about 22 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers
09:24perhaps on a warmer day i'd get a better result but in most of europe for six months we see
09:2910 degrees
09:30celsius or less so as they say your mileage may vary
09:37going back to recuperation for a moment porsche wants you to use regular brake pedal
09:41if you let go of the accelerator pedal the car will just coast only when you apply the brake the
09:46macan
09:47will start regenerating energy until friction braking kicks in it's so seamless that i never noticed the
09:53transition after about two days of driving my total range dropped below 400 kilometers and energy
10:00consumption jumped to over 24 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers adding 30 kilowatt hours from the home
10:06charger bumped the range up by about 150 kilometers
10:13as far as charging is concerned the macan has an 11 kilowatt onboard ac charger and it takes 10 hours
10:19to
10:19charge from empty to full type 2 sockets are on both sides of the car on the rear fenders the
10:25ccs port is
10:26only on the left side charging from a 400 volt dc charger at 135 kilowatts the macan will recharge from
10:3410
10:34to 80 percent state of charge in 33 minutes but using an 800 volt dc charger at 270 kilowatts the
10:42same amount
10:43of energy will be recuperated in just 21 minutes
10:52so under optimum conditions the macan can regain up to 250 kilometers in just 10 minutes
10:57optimum conditions mean the optimum battery temperature and the right state of charge of
11:02course when planning a route with charging stops using the oem satnav the computer will preheat the
11:07battery before charging the macan also features plug and charge which means you can plug the car
11:12in and there is no need for additional authorization with a card or an app plug and charge works only
11:19on
11:19certain networks
11:25and since this is an all-wheel drive car let's do my diagonal approach test standard macan has 185
11:32millimeters ground clearance which goes up by 10 millimeters with the off-road package and then the
11:38adaptive suspension in off-road mode allows the car to go up by 20 and even up to 40 millimeters
11:44so how
11:46did it do i stopped halfway so two wheels on the diagonal have limited traction and then i try to
11:52get
11:52going again the first attempt was an off-road mode the second attempt was a normal mode and the third
12:00attempt
12:00was in normal mode with the traction control off i doubt the macan leaves the tarmac often especially
12:07not on 22 inch rims and road tires but i also suspect sooner or later someone will slap on some
12:14all-terrain rubber on their macan because why the hell not the traction battery is protected from the bottom
12:20with a composite shield the traction battery is made up of 12 modules each module consisting of 12 prismatic
12:27cells and each cell has its own aluminium casing individual modules and crucial components can be
12:33individually replaced
12:44the macan cockpit features not two but up to three displays and the third one in front of the passenger
12:50is in my opinion useless like in other cars the passenger can control the multimedia system like
12:59they oh i can't reach it from here really i can reach it from here so you also can you
13:04lazy bum anyway
13:06they can also stream some videos which the driver won't be able to see now the curved display in front
13:11of
13:11the driver is from the tycan you can display something that pretends to be porsche analog instruments or you
13:16can turn the whole thing into like this wide screen navigation and the directions are presented not
13:23just on the screen but also on the heads up display the central display gives you more data and all
13:30the
13:30settings i suspect there are more features with the porsche app paired with the car however as this is a
13:36brand new press car i wasn't able to get the press office to get me paired with my porsche account
13:41and without your personal account and the app you get asked about data privacy and data transfer every
13:47time you start the car underneath the porsche interface runs android automotive os you can of
13:54course use wireless android auto and apple carplay but route planning with charging stops is available
13:59only via the oem navigation according to specification these are the comfort seats i don't know how
14:07uncomfortable are the standard seats then despite 14 way electrical adjustment the lateral support
14:13isn't great well at least there are up to three memory settings the door pockets are large there are
14:21okay cup holders there is some small storage under the armrest and a small glove box under the central
14:27display and the air vents is a wireless charger for just one phone you can also run a usb cable
14:33into
14:33this cabbie there is a small hole from a shelf underneath where usb ports are located access to
14:39this lower space is obstructed by drinks in the cup holders doors cover the sills and that's a plus
14:46however i'm more interested in the sharp finish of these rather nice aluminum window frames the internet
14:53spent the last six months chopping vegetables and wieners with the cybertruck frunk with the macan you can peel
15:01potatoes and if you're not careful you can hurt your finger or tear your clothes
15:09despite longer wheelbase there's not as much more space in the back as i thought
15:14perhaps it's not as bad as in the ice macan but i don't know where almost nine extra centimeters
15:19disappeared rear passengers can enjoy two climate zones heated seats usbc ports automatic window blinds
15:28door pockets armors with cup holders and somehow despite a dedicated ev platform porsche left a
15:35tunnel running through the middle not a big one but still isofix on the rear side seats are of course
15:43standard the one on the front passenger seat costs 178 euro
15:51the macan has a trunk and a frank or a boot and a fruit the frank fruit has 84 liters
15:57capacity regardless
15:58of whether the car is rear or all-wheel drive now the shape is that of a wedge so while
16:04a soft
16:05weekender bag should fit a hard carry-on suitcase will probably not fit and i wouldn't throw a jacket in
16:13here
16:13this is where the type 2 charging cable lives so this area is not going to be particularly clean
16:26i don't want to bend the bonnet
16:35the boot should have 540 liters volume that's if you don't specify the 4750 euro brewmaster
16:45audio system which occupies about 100 liters of underfloor storage what you see here is about 440 liters
16:54there are levers to fold backrests in the second row these split 40 20 40 there's also an optional 230
17:00volt socket for 143 euro there is one shopping bag hook elastic tapes to secure some lighter items
17:08anchor points to secure bigger luggage there are also buttons to lower the rear suspension for easier
17:14access prices prices of the porsche macan electric start at 80 700 euro for the rear wheel drive model
17:21when i last reviewed a macan back in 2022 the base model started around 65 000 euro the macan 4
17:29starts
17:29at 81 100 euro this test example with options costs 126 565 euro although electrification of the automotive
17:42sector seems inevitable that's still a decade away today car makers are calculating emissions to be
17:47able to sell ice cars which the customers still demand for the petrol 911 to be with us as long
17:54as
17:54possible porsche has to sell electric macans is the electric macan exceptional no at least not the macan 4
18:01but it feels like a real porsche even without the engine noise and definitely without the porsche electric
18:07sound fart and what do you think about the electric macan let me know in the comment section below
