Can a budget Chinese crossover really go toe-to-toe with the Hyundai Kona, Kia XCeed, Toyota C-HR and Dacia Duster? The Chery Omoda 5 tries to make that case with modern styling, a 1.6 turbo badge, and equipment that looks far more ambitious than the price tag suggests.

This review digs into the Omoda 5’s real-world strengths and weaknesses: the surprisingly good ride and handling, the seamless dual-clutch gearbox, decent front visibility, and the noisy cabin at motorway speeds. It also covers the quirks, from remote engine start and USB video playback while driving to the mixed driver-assist calibration and the split climate-control menus. Inside, there are wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a Sony-branded audio system, electric seats, and enough practicality for everyday use, even if rear visibility and adjustment range could be better.

The test car is the Premium trim, while the Comfort version starts at around 27,000 euro and the higher-spec model tested here is around 30,000 euro. Boot space, rear-seat room, fuel consumption, and the confusing 290T versus 275T badge are all part of the discussion, alongside whether Chery has finally narrowed the gap with established brands.

00:00can you have a decent card that's also relatively cheap my experience with chinese brands so far
00:06is that while they can be cheap there's usually a good reason behind a low price
00:11when will they catch up with established players is it going to be in a couple of years or are
00:16they just around the corner or maybe they are already here on my set this is the omoda 5 290t
00:23and it's as obscure as it sounds so let's see if it's any good
00:55so
01:05so
01:36the omoda 5 brand is owned by china's cherry it's like the fruit but misspelled with only a single
01:43r the omoda 5 crossover also known as the cherry omoda 5 is omoda's first model it debuted in late
01:502021 the letter o is for oxygen and moda is for modern omoda 5 is more or less the size
01:59of the dacia
02:00duster ds4 hyundai kana kia x-seed skoda carog or toyota chr however with the exception of the dacia
02:09which even fully loaded is on par with omoda other competitors price lists start above top premium
02:16spec omoda 5. the design is as modern and as generic as you'd expect from a crossover i see a
02:24lot of
02:25facelifted nissan cash kai here without pointing fingers at who was first to draw the features
02:30anyway the omoda 5 attracts attention because on the one hand most people still don't recognize the
02:36brand and on the other hand it looks pleasing to prospective buyers
02:46before we set off something i suppose many people will like even though it may not be legal
02:50in some markets it is possible to start the engine remotely something that's normal in the us is mostly
02:58banned in europe for example in poland it is illegal to leave the car running unattended and in most of
03:05europe it's also illegal to leave the car idling for extended periods of time sure it's nice to get
03:10into a warm car in the winter but bear in mind that modern cars are designed to warm up while
03:14being
03:15driven rather than idling
03:36most chinese cars i've reviewed so far had some terrible auto translation of the interface from chinese
03:42to english this one has a good translation into polish and i suppose into other european languages as
03:49well though since the input material was complicated some of the output is also not as straightforward
03:56as one would like
04:01the omoda 5 also has another not necessarily legal feature which seems to be okay in china
04:07you can play videos from a usb drive on the infotainment screen while driving when you exceed about 20 or
04:1430
04:14kilometers per hour there's a prompt that perhaps you shouldn't be watching but you can just close it
04:19and continue watching most car makers either block video playback while driving completely or use a
04:27special screen which only the passenger can see
04:32okay so much for unorthodox features and now let's discuss the 290t badge on the tailgate it refers to
04:40the 1.6 petrol turbo engine which should have 290 newton meters of torque in some markets there is also
04:46in 1.5 turbo petrol which bears the 230t designation this here is a 290t badge but it seems to
04:55have only 147
04:56horsepower and 275 newton meters of torque probably to meet the euro 6e norm omoda's polish distributor
05:03told me the next batch of cars delivered here should have the 275t badge now performance the omoda
05:115 290t which is in fact 275t should accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 10.1 seconds
05:17before i
05:17tell you what result i got you have to listen and watch this sport mode animation it's called super mode
05:36so obviously with this fake engine noise on there is no media playback so it's something you'll turn
05:42on for a quick laugh by the way i got 8.4 seconds in sport mode and 8.9 seconds
05:48in normal mode
05:49the fuel economy is also off instead of playing 7 liters per 100 kilometers i assume that's in the
05:57combined cycle i barely managed to get below 8 liters per 100 kilometers an extra urban cycle
06:04on motorways i was closer to 10 liters around the city high 8 liters per 100 kilometers is feasible
06:12there is a reason why chinese car makers decided to focus on electric power trains
06:16they can't do efficient internal combustion engines
06:21other than that the omoda 5 probably has the best ride and handling out of the chinese cars i've driven
06:27so far the suspension evens out bumps nicely and it's also quiet the car sticks to the road in the
06:34corners and i don't have to fight understeer the double clutch gearbox works seamlessly as it should
06:41visibility front and to the sides is good 14 t5 shows in a chinese car one cannot be certain even
06:49of such
06:49fundamentals only rear visibility isn't great because of the falling roof line i only see what's happening
06:56right behind the car in the rearview mirror and i have to rely on the wing mirrors to see further
07:02back
07:03i'll also complain about the soundproofing above 100 kilometers per hour it gets so loud inside that you
07:09really have to turn up the volume of the audio of whatever you are listening to this unfortunately
07:15seems to be a recurring problem with chinese cars
07:22there are driver aids again some chinese cars i've reviewed were missing even traffic sign recognition
07:29the omoda 5 has everything required under the current eu regulations most settings are on the central
07:35display which makes them hard to turn off while driving adaptive cruise control with lane keeping
07:40assist is calibrated in such a way that on the one hand you can't pull the steering wheel too much
07:45because that disables lane keeping assist and on the other hand you can't just let the car drive itself
07:50because that will result in a warning that you should take over either way there's a lot of warning sounds
07:58and the driver attention monitoring system also bings and bongs all the time driver aids
08:03calibration leaves a lot to be desired here fortunately you can turn the warning sounds
08:08down with buttons on the left side of the gauge cluster
08:22let's talk ui the car has wireless android auto and apple carplay and when you start the car before you
08:28manage to get into any settings you're looking at the external interface you can get out of it
08:33pulling down a shortcuts menu from the top of the screen or pulling up the climate control menu from the
08:41bottom
08:42or you can use the programmable button on the steering wheel which can either mute the media or pull up
08:48the
08:49safety systems menu i selected the latter because then i'm closer to the main menu and i know
08:55whoever designed this never drove a car the driver aids menu shows the translation is good although the
09:04original may have been a bit complicated when going into the climate control menu it turns out the steering
09:11wheel heating is in one sub menu and the seat heating and ventilation is in a different menu steering
09:16wheel heater is quite weak and it shuts off quickly and sometimes cannot be turned on again for a while
09:23other settings are straightforward enough the light switches and the parking brake are over the
09:29driver's left knee the parking brake will release automatically only when you set off with the
09:34seat belt fastened under a central display are air vents and a wireless charger it's not very powerful
09:40but at least it doesn't overheat the phone like the one on the face lifted kia sorrento i reviewed recently
09:47and then we have cup holders a small cubby and some storage under the armrest there's also a cubby under
09:53the center console and in it are usba and usbc ports as well as a 12 volt outlet the glove
10:01box is average
10:02size the door pockets are large enough some of the switch gear looks like it's from mercedes also the
10:09speaker grills look like from mercedes or bmw while the audio system is branded by sony it's good enough to
10:16play loud over the engine and wind noise but that's that the seats are more comfortable than i expected
10:24but i wouldn't mind lumber support adjustment and like in hyundai and kia back in the day
10:31there is electric seat adjustment but no memory function i checked if it's not perhaps in the
10:38seat heating menu like in some other chinese cars but i couldn't find it anywhere and check your sitting
10:44position before you buy the seat and steering wheel adjustment is limited i'd like to sit back further
10:52but i can't because the steering wheel reach adjustment is insufficient doors cover the sills
11:00the door pockets accommodate bottles there is good leg room assuming you and the driver are no taller than
11:07175 centimeters same with headroom it's fine for me but a taller passenger could have a problem headroom is
11:15achieved mainly thanks to the backrest angle i wouldn't mind the backrest to be a bit closer to
11:20vertical but this would impact headroom in the back we get air vents usba and usbc ports an armrest with
11:30cap holders but no ski hatch ice fix anchor points are on the side seats in some markets there must
11:37be
11:37an option for heated rear seats but not here in poland according to the specification the boot capacity
11:44is 360 liters above the false floor is about 320 liters according to my calculation and there is also a
11:53styrofoam insert down there where you could store something and at the very bottom is a mini
11:58spare there are no shopping bag hooks but there are some anchor points to secure your luggage and
12:05there is a 12 volt outlet omoda 5 is available in comfort or premium trim premium gets things like a
12:12sunroof dual zone climate control heated steering wheel a 360 camera or electrically operated tailgate
12:19the lesser comfort trim costs 27 000 euro and the premium trim like this test car costs 30 000 euro
12:29until recently when someone asked me about chinese cars i said their low price finds reflection in
12:36quality which is a decade or so behind the established players omoda 5 proves it is possible
12:43to offer low price and quality similar to that you'll find among the competition it's not ideal but i
12:50suggest you test drive one not just because of the price and how do you like the omoda 5 let
12:56me know in
