00:00he's national nfl writer for the boston globe hey ben what's up boys sorry for the mix-up this
00:05morning no all good you know what maybe we should start with the giants because you wrote about
00:09scadaboo recently and uh jj mccarthy should we buy into the giants or should we remember that
00:17you know they could have lost the game here to the commanders and they lost to the saints the
00:21week before i mean i'm buying the giants just because the nfc east is so down and they've
00:28already uh racked up four wins it really is going to come down to the giants or the cowboys and
00:34do
00:34any of us trust the cowboys to be consistent on a week-to-week basis right i mean it's a
00:38it's
00:38impossible and uh you know i i do think eventually the giants uh are going to hit their ceiling like
00:46i don't think they have that dynamic of an offense they're playing with backup quarterbacks but john
00:51harbaugh is a great coach and he gets the most out of that team and he's setting a culture there
00:55and
00:56they're going to win some games that maybe they shouldn't win or they're going to win some games
01:00in the fourth quarter that that are close so i just think uh what he's building there um yeah the
01:06giant the giants are going to be i don't think a super bowl contender but i think a contender to
01:11win
01:11the nfc east and be a wild card team and they're going to get to feast on the commanders and
01:17the
01:17eagles for the rest of the year and uh i just you know the the division is so bad that
01:23you have to
01:23take the giant seriously going to feast on the commanders that's that's hilarious um just looking
01:28at the cowboys schedule and you may be right ben cowboys this is the time in the schedule they have
01:33to kind of make their move card cardinals at home at the colts and we'll talk about them selling all
01:39the pieces off in a second now they play the 49ers but they get them at home then they play
01:44the
01:44titans and the eagles before the schedule really starts to toughen up so in the next five weeks
01:49that's kind of when dallas needs to make their move and uh and get to the top of the division
01:54yeah they've got to win at least three of those games and probably four to feel good about right
02:00winning the nfc east and i mean the cowboys should win that division uh the other three teams are very
02:06flawed uh and the giants are nothing special but uh i think john harbaugh just has a good uh he's
02:13building a good program there he's um building a good culture i think you know you saw two weeks
02:19ago you know cam scadaboo gets benched no carries john harbaugh making a point that you know ball
02:25security is pretty important and then he comes back and scadaboo has 17 carries for over 100 yards and
02:30scores that game-winning touchdown uh jj mccarthy we'll see what he can do um if he can not throw
02:36the interceptions maybe the giants have something there because that was the issue with james winston
02:41is the giants were turning the ball over three times a game with him so uh i'm not totally sold
02:46on
02:47the giants but yeah you know the cowboys i just every week man it's like you don't know which
02:51team is showing up that defense is still not fixed um that was a good you know good fourth quarter
02:58and
02:58a good win in philly the other day but do any of us have any confidence that they're going to
03:01come back
03:02and play well against the cardinals who do have a couple of nice upset wins already this season
03:07so i just the cowboys are just so inconsistent week to week i don't know how you can trust them
03:12yep uh all right so you mentioned the commanders and obviously they've had some significant struggles
03:19with game management decision making certainly from jayden there against the giants and um they're
03:25coming off a game where they look like they're going to get beat by six touchdowns against san
03:29francisco made it a game could have won it had the uh the the holding call on bill's uh bill
03:35merits run
03:36a touchdown could have taken the lead there uh one four and one they're playing the eagles
03:42sunday night it's a must win do you think the commander should be maybe buying some pieces
03:47before the trade deadline or i guess kind of depending on what happens sunday night and selling
03:52off i don't think they should be buying pieces uh i don't think this is a team that wants to
03:58be
03:58giving up draft picks because i think everyone sees where this ultimately is headed uh dan quinn's seat
04:05is red hot right now um and it just looks like unless they pull off you know some big miracle
04:12run
04:13here and and uh you know win eight of ten or something like that then i think the commanders
04:18are probably going to be starting over uh this offseason so i don't think they should be adding
04:23pieces you know they already have like you know stefan diggs and they've already added some veteran
04:29pieces to kind of get ready for this year um so i think if anything if they lose then it's
04:35probably
04:36white flag time i think dan quinn could be in trouble i think yeah maybe you start to maybe you
04:41could trade stefan diggs to a contender um but i don't think they want to be adding just the odds
04:47of
04:48them going on a run and making a playoff run are pretty slim right now and you know look at
04:53the colts
04:54they're trying to rebuild they're they're starting over but they've already traded away their their
04:58first round pick for next year so that's not that's not a great way to reset so i think the
05:02commanders you know they don't have to trade their first round pick it could be a later pick but i
05:06think they're in the mode of wanting to accumulate picks as opposed to trading them away but that's
05:11assuming that adam peters is safe right and he can just let it play out you know be let quinn
05:18be the
05:19sacrificial lamb how do you make that distinction when a gm is able to survive these kinds of things they
05:24typically do survive a little longer right but they they these two feel like huh yeah but these
05:31two feel like they're kind of tied together in many ways they're such a united front um i don't think
05:37we've necessarily seen a fraction yet like publicly where you know they're not standing next to each
05:43other anymore or they're not yet sort of united but how do these things typically play out i think the
05:50better organizations tie the general manager and the head coach together just because you want
05:56everyone on the same timeline i think you see a lot i've seen this a lot with the jets and
06:00the
06:00dolphins over the years where they fire one guy but keep the other and so then the you know like
06:05if
06:06they keep the gm he's still feeling the heat he wants to win now but the coach wants to start
06:10over
06:10and rebuild and start from scratch so you know you just i think it's better to have everyone aligned
06:16by having them on the same timeline you know you mentioned the colts they did fire their gm chris
06:21ballard but he survived a few coaching turnovers he was there when frank reich was there and um
06:27i'm blanking on who they had after frank reich and then shane or maybe shane so anyway he he survived
06:32a
06:32while you know the gm uh those guys sit next to the owner during the game so they can kind
06:39of sit there
06:39and tell the owner why why the coach is messing things up and why the team is supposed to be
06:44good but
06:44the coaching staff just and i'm not saying that necessarily happened here but i think you see
06:49that a lot where the gm just has the opportunity to sit next to the owner a lot during during
06:53the
06:53games uh and and kind of explain why things are happening and uh i do think finding a coach might
07:00be a little bit easier than finding a good gm uh i yeah i get the sense that dan quinn's
07:06seat is hotter
07:07than adam peter's seat i haven't gotten any indication that uh josh harris wants to completely wipe out
07:14the front office but uh you know with dan quinn just the the you know last year was such a
07:20struggle
07:21and then the game management stuff this year has been so bad i i really feel for dan quinn like
07:26if they lose this game to the eagles it honestly like the most humane thing for josh harris might be
07:31to just fire him instead of making dan dan quinn go through this week after week and talking about
07:36his job security so it is definitely a must win um for for dan quinn and uh you know maybe
07:42for for
07:43adam peters too but i don't get the sense that josh harris wants to make wholesale changes i would
07:49imagine really just the coaching staff is really on the hot seat ben how did you forget that great
07:53coach jeff saturday after reich how'd you forget you're right and and he's the one who's ripping all
07:59these analytics decisions this week right uh so so maybe the colts made the right move to not hire
08:05jeff saturday so what what other right what other pieces do you think will go um i don't know if
08:11you
08:11think jonathan taylor remove what about saquon if philly loses uh sunday night here do you think
08:16saquon goes or maybe goddard do you think there's another two or three big names that might move
08:21yeah i do think the eagles are going to be selling off i do think the colts the colts thing
08:26is really
08:26interesting because they fired the gm and they have an interim guy who's now making the trade
08:31and the interim guy is probably not going to be there either so that that's just kind of like
08:35a weird setup and the owner's on the sideline taking notes during games or the woman or say is
08:41that the is that the daughter yeah the daughter yeah and and i'm fine with carly ursay being on the
08:47headset i think that's smart for the owner but to be standing on the sideline is such i think
08:52performative nonsense like she should find a quiet place in the stadium to watch the game by herself
08:56and listen in but it's just so overbearing um what coach in his right mind would want to work
09:03for an owner that's literally looking over his shoulder you know on the sideline so she you know
09:08she i think is has the right idea by listening in to the headsets during the game but to stand
09:14on the
09:14sideline is i think really bad form and so it doesn't sound like she has anyone telling her that so
09:20anyway but yeah i i do think uh there will i don't know about sake one that that's a that's
09:25a big
09:26piece to trade away um if you're the eagles he's such a big part of that organization i know he's
09:31a
09:31running back and and they want to rebuild but i'm not sure about sake one but i do think the
09:36eagles
09:36will be selling off um you know the chargers will probably be selling off some pieces uh the titans
09:44have a few veteran guys so like there's going to be some names uh but not many teams are really
09:48waving the white flag at this point in the season that's why they have uh the trade deadline so early
09:53in the season they don't want teams giving up and and selling away all their players so definitely the
09:58colts are going to do it well i think whoever loses this game between the eagles and commanders is
10:03probably a seller but there aren't going to be too many big big names yeah just because teams aren't
10:10ready to give up on the season yet talking to ben valin national nfl writer for the boston globe so
10:15a couple thursdays ago we saw that great matchup between caleb williams and drake may bears came
10:20out on top 30 to 24 both teams are playing good football which team do you think has a better
10:25chance to make it to the super bowl of course the patriots did it last year but the bears all
10:30of a
10:30sudden look like a force in the nfc yeah the bears definitely look formidable they've got a lot of
10:35talent a really great coaching staff and uh caleb williams has taken so far a really nice jump
10:42to go from 58 uh percent completion to 71 this year reminds me of uh josh allen in his third
10:49year
10:50went made a very similar jump uh like that so caleb williams definitely starting to come into his own
10:56i'd say probably the bears have a little bit better shot at the super bowl just because i think the
11:01patriots already having three losses they're probably going to be a wild card team assuming they make the
11:07playoffs and i just think that's a tough road uh to the super bowl to get there whereas i still
11:12think
11:12the bears could win that division i don't fully believe in the vikings yet i think they've been
11:17schedule merchants a little bit now it's going to be a lot tougher for them uh kyler their defense is
11:22great but kyler murray has been so so ineffective that i think the vikings are going to start to fall
11:27back a little bit so yeah the bears look strong but i i do like how the patriots are playing
11:33right now
11:33i i thought i thought that that thursday loss in chicago is actually like fairly impressive that's a great
11:39game he can't drake may can't throw interceptions in the end zone and they made a few too many
11:44mistakes but that game could have gotten out of hand in a hurry for the patriots you're down 10
11:48nothing on the road on a thursday night like soldier field is rocking um the patriots were down
11:54several starters and they kept fighting and they kept coming back and they made a game of it and
11:59drake may played really well other than that one interception i don't see too many glaring weaknesses
12:04for the patriots the offense is scoring 31 points a game and they haven't even gotten aj brown going
12:10yet right the last four weeks so you know the patriots their schedule is tough and they're probably
12:15going to end up being a wild card team but i do like the way that they're playing right now
12:18i think
12:19they're they're looking pretty good what what uh what were fans up there because you're up there in
12:23the in the boston area what were fans saying about may's first game where he had one touchdown
12:28and six picks um and some fumbles too as and now after three that was after three weeks now he
12:35has
12:3512 and two in the games after that so four through seven but what were the fans saying after the
12:40first
12:41three starts yeah there was a lot of panic after week three they lost to the jaguars 35 to six
12:46just a total blowout and this is you know coming off uh kind of a down stretch to end last
12:53year i know
12:53they made the super bowl but drake may's numbers in the playoffs were not that strong
12:57uh a lot of fumbles and giveaways and then it continued into week you know weeks one through
13:03three this year not just the jaguars game but the the kickoff game against the seahawks there was
13:07three picks in the fourth quarter and including that one in the end zone at the end of the game
13:11to lose it i mean people were wondering if if drake may was just a flash in the pan and
13:17is he is he
13:17kind of broken at this point was last year just him feasting on uh some bad teams and i think
13:24what
13:24he's shown the last four weeks is that last year was not a fluke that he is a very good
13:28quarterback
13:29and it's now the same thing for him two years in a row last year he had a shaky start
13:34to the season
13:34the patriots started one and two they had a bad loss at home to the raiders and then it takes
13:39a
13:39few games and then drake may and josh mcdaniels they just click like they find answers to their
13:44problems they figure out what's going wrong and you know how can they figure it out and drake may just
13:49become so much more calm and poised in the pocket and he's able and he sees the field better and
13:54he
13:54and he makes big plays down the field but also against chicago he he took the short throws over
14:00and over again he was impatient those first three weeks just stressing and trying to make a play i'm
14:05sure he heard the chatter all off season about how he struggled in the playoffs and i think he saw
14:10him
14:11really pressing in the first three weeks and since then he's just been cool and calm and really poised
14:16uh for a 24 year old kid back there so i think drake may has been very impressive and uh
14:22assuming he
14:23doesn't fall off a cliff he's going to have the patriots you know being competitive and and being
14:27in that playoff race at the end of the season real quick ben who do you believe in more cleveland
14:31faces pittsburgh both teams five and two deshaun watson a lot of people didn't think he'd be starting at
14:37this point in the season aaron rogers has been playing some good football who do you believe in more
14:42i believe good question neither rogers more than watson i believe in the browns though they have
14:50a very easy schedule this year and like all their games are sunday at one o'clock very easy to
14:55get
14:55into a rhythm they don't have any long travel they're not playing on weird nights or playing
15:00in europe or even going really west of the mississippi and it's it's frankly it's the same
15:04formula that the patriots rode to the super bowl last year so i i think the steelers are going to
15:09win
15:09this sunday i just you know the browns won the first matchup i like the steelers to get their
15:13revenge this time but at the end of the season i think the browns are a playoff team just because
15:18yeah you know they're already five and two and their schedule is pretty easy and i think they're
15:23gonna you know win enough games to sneak in as like the seventh seed so um the the schedule and
15:30and
15:30the the strength of schedule and just when the games are played i think it's such a big factor that
15:34maybe people don't you know look into too much you know it affects these are humans out there and
15:40to be able to have your body in a regular rhythm every week i think it's going to do well
15:44for the
15:44browns this year all right ben thanks for checking in with us that's ben valin from the boston globe
15:49thanks pal thanks bro guys
15:50you
