00:00What's up, Baldy? Good morning.
00:02Hey, good morning, guys. How are you?
00:04We are doing well.
00:05So, Niners beat the Commanders on Monday Night Football.
00:10Looked like the Commanders were just going to get boat raced in that game in the first half.
00:15They stiffened up defensively in the second half.
00:17Now, it helped that Mike Evans went out of the game because they were having a hard time covering him.
00:21But I loved your cut-up, Baldy, that you sent out on Sonny Stiles.
00:26You titled it the captain and commander of this defense.
00:30Gave them a chance to win again.
00:33And, look, you just see all the skills on display that made Adam Peters and Dan Quinn fall in love
00:38with Sonny Stiles.
00:39Like, he's a special one.
00:40You can tell already through six games.
00:42There's no doubt.
00:44And, you know, I mean, Adam comes from, you know, San Francisco where they drafted Fred Warner.
00:50And Fred is, he's that guy and has been for the 49ers for the last eight years.
00:56And I feel like when they were looking at Sonny, that's what they wanted.
01:00They wanted that natural leader.
01:02I mean, he was a guy that started, you know, right away in college and kind of grew up in
01:08a system
01:09and was always the take-charge guy.
01:11And that's what he's doing right now.
01:12But, you know, that play that he made on Mike Evans when they were ready to boat race him.
01:16I mean, Mike caught that ball over the middle for a first down.
01:19He stripped it right out of his hands, forced him to punt.
01:21And then they got a turnover on the next series.
01:24It really kind of slowed him down.
01:26And then, obviously, when Evans went down with the injury, you know, they kind of didn't have the same firepower
01:33that had to start that game.
01:34And Washington got back in it.
01:36And, look, I mean, Traylon Burks got that ball in his hands despite everything that happened in between.
01:41He's got his ball in his hands on fourth and three to go give him the lead.
01:44And Mustafa, you know, gets the ball out at the very end.
01:49But, I mean, that was a perfect throw by Jaden to Traylon Burks right there at that moment
01:53to maybe give him a chance to take the lead.
01:57Brian, this guy who played in the league, been around the game forever, analyzing, looking at game film.
02:01What have you made of the commander's operation offensively the last couple weeks
02:05with, of course, the end of the game and the tie against the Giants,
02:08then the fourth down where Jaden throws it into the stands?
02:12It's been a disaster.
02:13I mean, when I saw it, I'm watching, I'm at NFL Films, I was watching the game right here
02:19in my office.
02:20And when Jaden threw it away, I was like, does he not know it's fourth down?
02:27Like, why would anybody do that?
02:29Like, throw it up in the end zone, do anything but do that.
02:33I mean, it's two weeks in a row now.
02:35Basically, the same thing has happened where they really weren't aware of the situation.
02:40And it doesn't look like the coach was aware either.
02:42And that's just unforgivable at this moment.
02:45I mean, these games come down to a play.
02:47And they've got a chance to win both games.
02:50And then you make those kind of decisions.
02:51It's just, I don't know how...
02:55I think the coach was aware, Brian.
02:57I don't know how you could blank on it.
02:59I don't even know how you could think it's an error, mistake, or, you know, we've got
03:03to get better.
03:03I can't fathom it.
03:06Well, I think it's been shown as times pass and people have really broken down the film
03:11that Dan was telling the truth, that he thought it was a penalty and they would actually get
03:15to, you know, five-yard penalty, whatever, and still get to kick a field goal.
03:19I think that's actually what happened.
03:21I think he was keenly aware of the down.
03:22I think it was misinterpreted.
03:23Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, that's possible.
03:25But, yeah, I know people are making that out to be, like, this cataclysmic mistake.
03:31To me, it's not that much different than a guy that gets sacked when, you know, you shouldn't
03:35take a sack.
03:36I mean, get rid of the ball, don't take a sack.
03:37I didn't understand why we're making it out to be, like, the worst sin possible.
03:41Yeah, I agree with that.
03:44I agree that it's not the end of the world.
03:46It's fourth down, like, there's nobody open.
03:49If you throw it away, you throw it away.
03:51There's nothing else, you know, there's no other play to be made.
03:54At that point.
03:55So, I mean, you know, it's just unfortunate.
03:59What do you think, Brian, what do you think, though, now that they did show some fight?
04:05What do you think, as far as, like, the future holds, these next couple games, I mean, obviously,
04:11you know, I don't think you can say we're favorites, but they're games that are potentially winnable.
04:17Yeah, I mean, like, Philadelphia's a mess.
04:19You know, the Rams are a mess.
04:21I mean, I think those are your next two games.
04:22The Giants, you know, you've got a rematch.
04:24Like, you know, they've been largely competitive.
04:27Yeah.
04:28You know, I mean, the Dallas game turned on a fumble in the third quarter, but that was
04:33a very, that was a winnable game.
04:35And, you know, the loss to, you know, maybe the worst loss was the loss to Indianapolis.
04:40But for the most part, I mean, they've had a chance to win these.
04:43And they, even though they've been downed like they were the first game of the year against
04:47the Philadelphia Eagles, they're a two-point conversion away from tying it up.
04:51Like, they have, like, you look at a lot of their players, and Meek Robertson's having
04:56a very good season.
04:57The defensive line has been great for the most part.
05:01You know, they're good against the run.
05:06They've been, they've found ways to get back in the game.
05:08Now, you can't keep losing players the way they're losing players.
05:11Like, losing Terry really hurts.
05:13But, you know, they overcame it the other day.
05:15Maybe Traylon Burks will look like a first-round pick as the season goes on.
05:19He's going to get a good opportunity.
05:21The rookie, Antonio Williams, looks really good.
05:24Like, they're going to get opportunities.
05:27But, yes, I mean, it's not over.
05:29Like, the one thing that you could definitely say about Dan is the team has never quit.
05:34And there's a lot of fight.
05:36And they've got some playmakers.
05:38Joined by Brian Baldinger, analyst for NFL Network.
05:41Nationwide is so much more than a great insurance company.
05:44They're one of America's largest financial services companies, too.
05:47Nationwide is on your side.
05:49So, you touched on it.
05:50How gutted were you when you saw the cart come out for Terry and put him in an aircast?
05:54I mean, he's like the leader of the team.
05:56You want him to have this healthy season with Jaden.
05:59And he goes down, lost a patella tendon injury.
06:03It was just devastating.
06:05Just devastating.
06:06You just don't think it's going to happen.
06:07It's kind of a routine play, going down to catch a ball like that.
06:10And then to see the, you know, you just see the respect immediately.
06:15You know, here comes Fred Warner over.
06:17And here comes the guys coming over just to, like, baby, dap them up.
06:21And, you know, I mean, all those guys, Fred Warner went down last year.
06:26You never thought he was going to go down.
06:27And George Kittle, they all went down last year.
06:29But they came back.
06:30And they're playing as well as ever right now.
06:32I'm sure they're probably saying the same thing to Terry.
06:35Like, I just saw, like, massive respect, you know, from the 49ers for Terry
06:40and how he conducts his business, what kind of person he is.
06:43The guy's got a smile on his face every day.
06:46Man, I was heartbroken for him.
06:48Right.
06:49Before we move on to some of the other matchups around the league
06:52and other things to talk about, I think we asked you this last week,
06:54but let's update it.
06:56Nobody won in the NFC East again.
06:58If you had to guess, which team wins the division?
07:01Well, this has never happened before in the NFC East,
07:06where all four teams lost two weeks in a row, didn't win two weeks in a row.
07:13I don't know.
07:14I honestly don't know.
07:15I can't see thousands of defense.
07:18It's really hard.
07:19I mean, I don't know what Philadelphia is, how they're going to.
07:22They weren't playing good with their starters that were in there.
07:25And now a lot of those guys are gone.
07:28And I feel like Philadelphia's defense is still the best unit of all the units
07:35in the NFC East right now.
07:38And although they're not taking the ball away and winning games the way, say,
07:43Pittsburgh Steelers' defense did against Tampa the other day,
07:46I feel like that's still the best unit out there.
07:49I just don't know if they can ever consistently score points
07:53the way the offense looks right now.
07:55And so, honestly, I feel like last year, I think Carolina won the division at 8-9.
08:02I feel like it could be a losing record to win the division.
08:07Baldy, do you think Howie Roseman, GM of the Eagles,
08:10goes into full sale mode at this point, 2-4?
08:13Or does he keep most of it intact?
08:16Because, as we've been talking about, the NFC East is not very good.
08:19You could still win the division with eight or nine wins this year.
08:23What do you think Howie does at the deadline?
08:24I've never seen – you know, they've had some bad years.
08:27Like when Doug Peterson's last year, they won four games.
08:30They didn't do anything like that.
08:31Now, they ended up getting a new coach, and Jalen Hurst became the quarterback,
08:35and they went on a great six-year run.
08:38But Howie's never done it.
08:40It's not his DNA to kind of give up on a season.
08:43They've got a couple contracts that I'm sure going forward they're not in love with right now.
08:49But I don't see him doing that.
08:52I don't know exactly, you know, I mean, Saquon, Devontae Smith.
08:55Like, I can't see them unloading those players to potential playoff teams
09:01or teams that want to make a run.
09:03It hasn't done it.
09:04I don't expect him to do it.
09:06Did you see this coming with the Chargers?
09:08Did anybody?
09:10No.
09:11No, no.
09:11I mean, they won 11 games in a row, two years in a row.
09:14And they thought getting Mike McDaniel – like, the playoff loss was disappointing.
09:19I thought, you know, they fired the offensive coordinator, the offensive line coach,
09:23almost immediately.
09:25And I think when they brought in Mike McDaniel, I thought – everybody thought it was going
09:29to be a real big upgrade.
09:30But, you know, they're starting four rookies in the offensive line.
09:33That's not an excuse because they weren't playing pretty – they weren't playing well
09:37before that.
09:38But, you know, they can't run the ball at all.
09:41Like, they had first down at the one, and all they did was go backwards last week.
09:44Like, they can't get a yard, basically, right now.
09:48And Justin Herbert is a mess, and the talent around him isn't very good.
09:53But they were winning with those guys for the most part before that.
09:58And so we just thought, you know, Jim Harbaugh could coach you out of any situation.
10:03And right now, you know, it's not looking good, and they've got the bye right now.
10:10And maybe they'll make a change to make a change right now.
10:14But I didn't see it happening.
10:15I don't think – and I know the people that are in that building there in Los Angeles
10:19pretty good.
10:20Nobody saw this going this far backwards.
10:23Hey, Baldy, if you had told me last week, last Saturday night, hey, the Cardinals are
10:29going to go to SoFi, and they're not going to score a touchdown in their game against
10:33the Rams, I would have hit you up for a massive interest-free loan to bet on the Rams to
10:38win the game, the Rams fall at home 18-16.
10:42They're now 2-4.
10:43They lose Devontae Adams to a ruptured hamstring.
10:46Like, things are just coming apart at the seams for the Rams.
10:50They're finding different ways to lose.
10:52But, I mean, honestly, when you watch the game and study it, Arizona outplayed them.
10:56Their defense just outplayed their offense for the most part.
11:00They made stops when they had to make stops.
11:02And Puka made a couple of plays, but that was about it.
11:06They held them just two touchdown drives the whole day.
11:09Their defense played way better than their offense.
11:11And offensively, they have a style, and the style is basically they dink and dunk it to
11:18death, and they just possess the ball.
11:20Jacoby Brissett's good at it.
11:22They don't make a lot of big plays, but they hang on to the football.
11:25They get a lot of first downs.
11:27And that's what they did.
11:28They went down and kicked a game-winning field goal there.
11:30You know, in the final, they got one big play to get in field goal range, and they made
11:34six of them.
11:35And so, they eked out a win.
11:37But, you know, the Rams right now have lost three out of four.
11:42You know, one was to Denver when they were up 16-0.
11:44One was in overtime to Buffalo where they just couldn't stop Josh Allen at all the whole
11:50day.
11:51And then they lose to Arizona like that.
11:53They're finding ways to lose games.
11:54All their games are very close outside of that first loss to San Francisco when we kind
11:59of just chalked that up to bat international travel, and they looked like they were sleepwalking
12:07that game.
12:07But they're in trouble right now.
12:09They're in a pretty big hole, and they've got to dig themselves out of this right now.
12:14Baldy, good game tonight.
12:16Matchup of two of the quarterbacks drafted in the same class.
12:20Last three games after everybody was assaulting Drake Mays got 10 touchdown passes during
12:26this three-game winning streak.
12:28Caleb comes back last week.
12:29His completion percentage is much higher this year.
12:32What do you think happens tonight?
12:35The way it was the defense should be fun, man.
12:36Yes.
12:37Yep.
12:38I've never been to the University of Michigan.
12:40I've never been to the big house.
12:42Oh, wow.
12:42I can't wait to get there.
12:44I'm sure it'll be awesome.
12:45Well, Baldy, thanks for the time, man.
12:46We'll have you on again next week, and safe travels this weekend.
12:50Okay.
12:51Appreciate it, guys.
12:51Thanks, bud.
12:52That's Brian Baldinger, analyst for NFL Network.
