The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is seeking more than $210 million over the next six months to sustain food assistance and emergency relief operations in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), where an Ebola outbreak is worsening a hunger crisis fuelled by years of armed conflict. According to WFP, nearly 3.5 million people across affected areas are facing crisis levels of hunger or worse, as disrupted markets and isolation measures leave families struggling to access food.

WFP has delivered more than 740,000 hot meals at nearly 60 treatment and isolation facilities and distributed around 3,000 metric tons of food rations to patients’ families. The agency is also supporting the transport of medical supplies and other relief materials, but insecurity, poor roads and bad weather continue to hamper access. WFP warns that without timely funding, food deliveries and critical logistics supporting the Ebola response could be disrupted.
