It's that time of year where kids from the bush compete for the title of best bird caller. The Borunda Bird Olympics gets bigger every year and once again students have done an im-peck-able job of impersonating the sounds of native Australian birds.

00:02Mimicking Australian bird calls is no mean feat.
00:08Students from seven primary schools have met in Marimbula,
00:11taking part in the 2026 Bounda Bird Olympics.
00:19The event, hosted by the Bounda Environmental Education Centre,
00:23has entered its ninth year.
00:30It's the first time a school in the Snowy Mountains has joined the event,
00:34with students from Nimit Bell Public School making a solid debut.
00:41We've all sat together and watched the different calls online
00:44and listened to them, as well as out in nature,
00:47and they've all been practising in the playground,
00:49so during playtime they'll all be...
00:51you'll hear lots of bird calls while they've been practising,
00:53which has been a lot of fun.
00:58The competition once thrived in the 1950s
01:02and has made a triumphant return.
01:06There's quite a lot of teams here this year,
01:09I think a lot more than there was last year,
01:11and it's gratifying to see them getting involved with the birds
01:15and seeing what's around.
01:23Deciding a winner is the tough part.
01:26When the judges set a score,
01:27they take into account the accuracy of a bird call,
01:30technique and tone, but also creativity.
01:36A lot of the scores come in fairly close together
01:39and you have to try and differentiate them.
01:42And that's the most difficult thing about judging this.
01:46The rest of it is a very enjoyable process.
01:49This year's winner was Tartara Public School.
