00:00Toby Altizer in for JP. Appreciate Chase Hughes for stopping by, giving us his insights into what
00:07he saw at the NBA Draft Combine, NBA Draft Lottery out in Chicago. So I want to play some audio
00:14for
00:14you here in just a moment. So we heard from a couple of different things, and I think it's
00:18interesting when you talk about the different things that could go down for this NBA Draft
00:23and the way that the Wizards could maneuver, the way that they could make some moves. So
00:29I want to play something for Brian Windhorst here in just a moment that I think is interesting
00:34in terms of we just assume it's either going to pick one or two. This is from Brian Windhorst
00:39of ESPN saying that maybe, just maybe there's a chance they could move even further down
00:44if the right offer comes along. You know, the sentiment that I have heard is that Washington
00:48is sending out the message that they're willing to deal, but that the, if they do a deal,
00:53people think it will most likely not be with Utah. Um, but of course there's a long time
00:59between now and then. So that's interesting because if they move down and this is kind
01:05of how I feel about this draft B Mitch, I think that when you look at ceilings of players in
01:13this draft, I don't know that the difference between AJ to Bonsa, Darren Peterson is that
01:20much larger than Caleb Wilson. And I don't know that it's significantly larger than guys like
01:25Darius Acuff and guys like that. And so if you start getting past that top two, the reason that
01:30those guys separate themselves in my opinion is they're the most likely to make an instant impact.
01:35Yeah. But I do think you do have to consider like if, if I feel like I can get a
01:39ridiculous
01:40haul for the fourth pick, is that part of what just happened? We know when horse brain
01:47windows normally put stuff out there. What if this is what they want? Oh, he's not, they're
01:53not just trying to talk to the second guy. They're willing to go farther than that. What
01:57you offering more people come out, the more expensive things becomes. I don't think it's
02:02likely that they move off the first pick except with Utah. But from that reporting, I think
02:08it's like you're saying I'm, I'm throwing it out there. I'm going to find out. I want
02:10to find out what, what somebody is willing to offer. Because if you look behind it, we
02:14had a caller yesterday, bring this up. Third is Memphis. And would you want to go after
02:19John Miranda? I'm not that interested in John to be a hundred percent. I don't think they
02:22are going to be making that type of move at this point. But regardless, third is Memphis.
02:26So could they send you an offer that you would really consider? Chicago is fourth. I don't
02:31know that you're going any further than fifth really, but you know, the Clippers are fifth.
02:34I don't think that it's likely, but that is an interesting nugget that you're getting
02:39from Windhorst. Maybe it's a way that the Wizards front office is thrown out there.
02:42Like, Hey, send some offers. Doesn't mean we're going to take them, but just send some stuff
02:46our way and we'll see if we can come up with something good here.
02:49Yeah. We need to, but the thing of it, as Chase was stating, they are going to listen
02:55to and try to figure out everything out there. How do you do it? You get more people
02:59to offer you stuff. Yeah. And what if so-and-so wants us to do this? You're at number two.
03:07Well, and by the way, you want to offer a little more? Correct. By the way, saying, Hey, uh,
03:11we're not really doing deals with Utah. I don't believe that. I don't believe that at all.
03:16I think it's just something saying, Hey, we're trying to get some offers. By the way, Utah,
03:21we know we're working with you. Other people get involved. Yeah. Yeah. Because Utah may say,
03:26Hey, this is what we're offering. Oh, you're talking to other people. Uh, we're going to
03:30offer this too. You know, the, the whole deal is if something were to happen, it has to be the
03:37best deal possible. So Darren, Darren Peterson was on sports center and I think you'll like this
03:43just a little peek into his mentality. I thought what he had to say, you know, it's not like he
03:49said anything crazy, but I liked what Peterson had to say. He was asked about why he should be the
03:53pick and those sorts of things. Here was Darren Peterson, the sports center yesterday.
03:56Uh, like you said, I feel like I'm the best. So, um, any team I feel like I'm placed on,
04:00I can go in and make an instant impact on both sides of the ball. And I'm willing to do
04:04it. I
04:04would make my team better and help my team win. You and, uh, AJ DeBonsa, you got history. I mean,
04:10your former team USA teammates, high school rivals. In fact, y'all combined for 110 points in a game
04:17at one point, how would you describe your ongoing relationship since then?
04:23Uh, just two hoopers competing and chasing a dream, I think. But, uh, obviously when we step
04:28on the court, we trying to go at each other. So that's what we always do. And, uh, I've been
04:32blessed to come out on top every time. I love that right there at the end. In other words,
04:36he said, yeah, taller than me might be a little, he didn't cramp up there. Every time you see me,
04:43I beat him. I love that. That little mentality right there. That little bragging rights, dog.
04:48I like that. I like that. You know what AJ's thinking right now? Sure hope I go before that,
04:53before him. Yeah. Well, so I saw Jonathan Gavoni was talking about this, uh, VSPN and basically
04:59saying that every time that those two have been on the floor competing against each other,
05:03Darren Peterson has been the more impressive player. Okay. And I don't know that I can argue.
05:07Now I've only seen them play really once. I'm not diving into the high school circuit and all
05:11that stuff, but he's talking back to high school. I can tell you this, when you watch BYU Kansas this
05:16year, the more impressive guy was Darren Peterson. Now, unfortunately, Darren Peterson checked out
05:21in the second half and didn't play most of it. So that was kind of the Darren Peterson fit right
05:25into the dialogue there of Darren Peterson. But in that first half he dominated, but you know,
05:31there is someone out there saying, if we can correct that cramping thing, he might be the better
05:38player. There's somebody thinking that. And then there's another person where this guy doesn't
05:43cramp up like, yeah, but he's cooking him. You know what I'm saying? It's just, it's, it's,
05:49it's two sides to it. And, and, and that head to head thing, it means something to some people.
05:55Well, I love the mentality. You got just a little bit of a peek behind the curtain there. Just that
05:59subtle comment. Cause that's a killer right there. That's a guy that I want to be a leader of a
06:04team.
06:04Every time I went to play against him, I came out on top. Like that's the kind of guy I
06:08want in a
06:09big moment. That's the stuff that Kobe would say. That's the stuff that MJ would say. Right. So I
06:14love hearing that from a guy that's a competitor. That's a dude that you want to come in to be
06:19the
06:19star of your basketball team, because in the big moments, give me the basketball. Yeah. Give me the
06:23damn ball, sir. Get out of the way. Let me work. There we go. And I think when you look
06:27at Peterson for
06:28him, he mentions, I'm going to step in and help you on both sides of the ball. That's something that
06:34is a big question about AJ to Bonson. There's not off court questions, not injury questions or
06:39anything like that. It's just more so on the floor for AJ. Can he defend? Is he going to be
06:44an
06:44effective three point shooter for the most part for me with Darren Peterson? The main concern is
06:50really just the cramping. And that's what I said. Like the, if the, that cramping thing was not a
06:58thing it is, but if it wasn't, would we be saying the Bonson is the better player? I think
07:06we'd be having this discussion, but it'd be flipped. I think the, the leader in the clubhouse
07:09would be Darren Peterson. Cause I think for probably 60% of this college basketball season,
07:14he was the leader. So you go back, I played you, I cramp, but I win. Yeah. Well, and he's
07:23just, but like, they won't be the one choosing somebody else going to choose them, but that
07:29little athletic arrogance works for a lot of people. The main reason that I want to Bonson
07:36over Peterson, even though I'd be totally fine with either one of them is I value size. And
07:42I think for the Bonson, size matters, size matters in the NBA. A.J. to Bonson. I think if
07:52you can get him to buy in on the defensive end, which is a question, and if you can get
07:56him to play at a solid level, that's a guy that can guard potentially one through four
08:00versus Darren Peterson's a, a two guard probably a, well, you know, maybe he can guard one
08:05through three, but on the offensive end too, the Bonson is going to be probably better at
08:09the rim. I don't know if it's three point shots ever going to be as good as Darren Peterson.
08:14I also think too, in terms of what the wizards need right now, they need like a score, but
08:18in terms of position need, I think he fits kind of right into where they would need
08:21someone in that starting lineup. So that's another reason why I would do it. But I don't
08:25have an issue with either one of these guys. I think either one steps in and they're going
08:29to be your potential face of the franchise going forward. And it's just about being able
08:33to develop them into being that really good player. Cause I think they could be a fun
08:37team to watch next year with either one of those guys at the helm.
08:39Right now your point guard is Trey. If Peterson were to come here, this is just hypothetical.
08:45He goes as the shooting guard, the two. That's a hell of a deal right there.
08:52Oh yeah.
08:53You have other guys that you see, George, I think you look at, well, Trey Johnson, we got
08:59a Sarr. You still got AD in the mix and all that. You can have a legitimate deal right there.
09:06I understand the size of things, but can he be that too? And then all of a sudden when Trey's
09:12somewhere else, he moves into that. So an interesting part about this last week, we had
09:19chase on chase use on, and I'd asked him basically like, what do the wizards need?
09:24Like, what is it that they need? Not terms like position, but in terms like a trait of
09:28a player. And he said, they need a score. Just a guy that is a certified bucket getter.
09:35Either one of these guys fits that bill. Peterson or DeBonsa. Now DeBonsa comes with less
09:42questions, but Peterson can fill it up just as good as DeBonsa. So I don't think you can
09:48go wrong with either one of them. The tough part about this draft and why this trade discussion
09:53I think is so interesting is as much as those two have separated themselves, the reason I
09:58think they've separated themselves is because I just think they're more instant impact.
10:01I don't know that it's because their ceiling is significantly higher than a Caleb Wilson
10:06or a Cameron Boozer or a Darius Acuff or any of those sorts of guys. I think it's just more
10:11obvious that when you drafted DeBonsa or a Peterson, that they step in, they're competing
10:15for rookie of the year, and they're hopefully getting this wizards team to a spot where they're
10:19competing for a playoff spot next year. And I don't think, I think you just go with the best
10:26player. And that's why personally, for me, I'm just not going to move off of,
10:31I'm not going to move off the first pick unless it's a ridiculous offer. And I just
10:35get my choice. Now I do want to play some audio for you next where a business person
10:40threw out the idea that maybe you just take the number one pick because it's better for
10:43business. I don't know that that plays a lot into my thought process, but we'll play
10:48that audio for you.
