00:21U.S. First Lady Melania Trump has secured an agreement between Ukraine and Russia to temporarily hold military operations in
00:29the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky, the White House announced on Friday.
00:33The localized ceasefire is scheduled to begin on the 29th of October, with the intent being to allow humanitarian aid
00:40deliveries and evacuate civilians trapped near the front line.
00:43The White House said that the First Lady had initiated the discussions and that she and a representative worked directly
00:49with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to define the terms of the ceasefire.
00:54Oleshky is facing a deepening humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine, while attempts to escape
01:02have exposed civilians to mines and drone attacks.
01:06The city was captured on the first day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
01:11It was further devastated by flooding following the destruction of the Kharkovta Dam in June 2023, which submerged large parts
01:21of the area and damaged already fragile infrastructure.
01:24Before Russia's full-scale invasion, it had approximately 24,000 residents.
01:29According to White House estimates, only 1,700 to 2,000 remain, including around 50 children.
01:41The European Union is looking to play a bigger role in peace talks to end Russia's war on Ukraine.
01:48The United States wants to resume trilateral talks in November, and the European Union sees this as an opportunity to
01:55join in, bringing European representatives to the table.
01:59By doing so, by doing so, the bloc hopes to influence Washington's thinking, which has recently shifted sharply in Moscow's
02:06faces.
02:07The expectation is now that there will be talks, further talks at multilateral level, at senior official level.
02:17Of course, the European Union will also be represented in that occasion.
02:21The peace process stalled in February after the U.S. launched its war on Iran.
02:27As a result, much of its diplomatic focus shifted to the Middle East.
02:32The parliament's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, did not oppose European participation,
02:36but stressed that the next round of talks under preparation would remain trilateral.
02:47Restrictions on Starlink and its military-grade version, Starshield, have not been fully lifted along Ukraine's front lines,
02:55Ukrainian defense officials said on Friday, despite U.S. President Donald Trump's claim that Elon Musk had removed them.
03:02Officials monitoring the systems said they continued to record instances of terminals losing connectivity when travelling at speeds of 161
03:12km per hour.
03:14According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Trump called Musk on October 21st to request that he lift
03:22the restrictions on Starshield.
03:24Following the call, American and Ukrainian officials reported improvements in connectivity,
03:30although some caution that fully functionality had not been restored.
03:35Responsibility for the decision remains publicly disputed.
03:39Ukraine is meanwhile seeking to develop its own satellite communications capabilities
03:44in a move that could eventually reduce its reliance on SpaceX.
