00:01The European Union will maintain its sanctions regime against Russia until Moscow seizes its
00:07war of aggression against Ukraine, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonia Kosta reassured
00:13Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. Their comments were a rebuke to U.S. President Donald Trump
00:18for easing sanctions on Russia to strike a diesel supply deal with his Russian counterpart Vladimir
00:24Putin. We're working now on the 22nd sanctions package and one thing is absolutely clear,
00:32we will not lift any sanctions unless Russia stops the war. This is no time to withdraw the
00:42support to Ukraine. This is no time to relieve Russia's sanctions. Now it's time to increase
00:49our support, to increase our pressure. Zelensky thanked European leaders for their continued
00:55support, pointedly describing them as real leaders who had stood by Ukraine since the beginning
01:01of the war. We don't see now signals from Russian side that they are ready for this, to end this
01:09war. That's why we have to prepare for the winter. Meanwhile, Trump has once again attacked Zelensky,
01:15calling his strategy to strike Russian oil refineries a disgrace and demanding new elections in the
01:20country. Russian attacks struck nine regions of Ukraine overnight, officials said on Friday,
01:32damaging homes, causing emergency power outages for hundreds of thousands of households and
01:36wounding at least 15 people. Four people were injured in the Odessa region, Ukraine's state
01:42emergency service said, adding that an energy infrastructure facility was damaged while a
01:47manufacturing plant producing household goods caught fire. A subsequent attack Friday morning
01:53damaged seven private residential buildings and a separate drone strike hit a private business in
01:58Zaporizhia. Ukrainian civilians are paying a high price for the escalating Russian attacks,
02:05the United Nations Human Rights Office in Kiev said in a monthly report published on Friday.
02:09The report said at least 328 civilians were killed and 2,105 wounded last month, a total that is 85
02:19%
02:19higher than in September last year, noting that intensifying Russian attacks in October have
02:25already killed dozens of civilians, including children.
02:33Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected U.S. President's claim that
02:38he is more difficult to deal with than Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to Euronews on
02:44Friday at an EU summit in Brussels, Zelensky was asked about Donald Trump's criticism.
02:49He is more difficult to deal with me than Putin. And with him better than Putin but with me and
03:02Trump.
03:04I've been the only two meetings with the President of the United States of America. We always find issues for
03:14discussion and making the decisions.
03:16The remarks come amid tensions between Kiev and Washington over Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.
03:23Trump has criticized the strikes, blaming them for contributing to rising global fuel prices.
03:30Zelensky said his priority was to defend Ukraine, adding that it is clear that we have the right to defend
03:36ourselves.
03:36The Ukrainian president said Ukraine remained committed to ending the war, but accused Putin of having no genuine interest in
03:45a peace agreement.
04:07I'm confident that Donbass is too small.
04:11European leaders have meanwhile sought to maintain pressure on Moscow, despite Washington's decision to ease some sanctions.
04:24Ukraine is moving ahead with developing European alternatives to U.S.-made air defense systems and Starlink satellite communications.
04:32It comes amid mounting tensions between Kiev and Washington, and growing concerns about the reliability of American military support.
04:41In an exclusive interview with Euronews, the deputy head of the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Yorzhovka,
04:48said progress to reduce its reliance on American capabilities is well underway.
04:54We focus on the unique possibilities, which is the United States of America, or the United States of America, or
05:02the same system of Starlink.
05:05But look, Ukraine has already started to speak with European countries about the European system of PPO, project FREA.
05:13You know, seven countries are involved in this project, and almost all of the members of the European Union, and
05:21they are very clearly speaking about the current stage.
05:26Project FREA is an anti-ballistic missile program launched in Paris in July.
05:31Kiev is also pursuing talks on a European alternative to Starlink.
05:36Ukraine argues that both these projects are not only essential to Ukraine's defense, but also to Europe's wider security.
05:49The deal between the Trump administration and Russian President Vladimir Putin to lift sanctions on Russian diesel continues to fuel
05:56political controversy in Brussels.
05:59Euronews spoke with Richard Kohl's, who is among the more than 100 MEPs that called on the EU in a
06:05signed letter to maintain its support for Ukraine and impose a full embargo on Russian oil and gas imports.
06:12Moscow is counting on Europe to tire and resume business.
06:16So therefore, we are asking EU leaders to rule that out, keep Russian energy out, complete the oil and gas
06:23embargo, and maintain support for Ukraine.
06:26The EU has continued to import some Russian energy despite sanctions, particularly through remaining supply routes and specific exemptions.
06:36However, on Tuesday, the European Commission pushed back against what it said were inflated claims by both Russia and the
06:42United States regarding the bloc's spending on Russian energy since 2022.
06:49Almost 200 billion euros we have paid for gas, for oil, for the duration of four years.
06:55This is almost, I mean, the second place country who is putting that much revenue in the Kremlin's money chest
07:04is China.
07:04And we call China more and more as an enabler of Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.
07:10And imagine, we're somewhat becoming enablers of that.
07:14And that is really unacceptable.
07:16This is immoral from our point of view.
07:19Paul spoke on the sidelines of the European summit in Brussels, where Russia's war on Ukraine and soaring energy prices
07:27are among the key issues discussed.
07:35Disruptions and cancelled flights were reported on Friday morning at many Italian airports due to faults in the data transmission
07:42network that supports air traffic control services, the National Air Navigation Service Provider, ENAV, has announced.
07:49ENAV also said that although the faults were detected during the night between Thursday and Friday, normal management of air
07:57traffic without any reduction in operating capacity was ensured until 6 o'clock on Friday morning.
08:03The statement issued in the morning rules out any link between the faults and hacker attacks or sabotage.
08:09The authority explained that the source of the faults has been identified in the data transmission network and that it
08:17is working to determine the causes and restore full system operations.
08:21Italian airports are nevertheless experiencing disruption because of the network problem.
08:25Flights have been cancelled or delayed at Rome-Fumicino at the two Milan airports in Naples.
08:37The Vatican has released the first images of Pope Leo XIV since his lung cancer surgery,
08:43showing him celebrating Mass as doctors said that tests confirmed the continued improvement in his recovery.
08:50The 71-year-old Pope had the lower lobe of his right lung removed on Tuesday after doctors identified a
08:57suspected cancerous nodule.
09:00Spokesman Matteo Bruni said he presided alone over the liturgy,
09:04distributed communion to medical personnel and Vatican gendarmes present and delivered a homily.
09:11In his homily, Pope Leo thanked the hospital staff for their work taking care of the sick,
09:16and particularly how they had helped him during his treatment.
09:21Bruni also confirmed the Pope would make his first public appearance on Sunday to deliver the traditional and jealous prayer,
09:27although he did not confirm whether it would be from the hospital or from the Vatican.
09:38After more than two weeks of camping out in Puerta del Sol,
09:42fatigue is beginning to set in among the protesters demanding solutions to Spain's housing crisis.
09:48Amid tents and awnings, they've created a small community right in the heart of Madrid,
09:53where they distribute food donated by citizens, have access to health care,
09:57and work together to keep the area clean.
09:59But conditions are difficult.
10:02They don't have their own restrooms and many barely sleep.
10:05Even so, they say that solidarity and mutual support give them the strength to carry on.
10:10I would say that we are the most tired, but also more organized and more ilusioned.
10:15This is the table where we ask the donations of food and other materials that the camp is needed,
10:22and the people of Madrid pass over here and bring it to us.
10:26Meanwhile, institutional pressure to end the protest is mounting.
10:30The community of Madrid has announced that it will exhaust all legal avenues to secure the eviction
10:35after the High Court of Justice rejected its request.
10:39With this system we can't have aspirations.
10:42Many of our young children and children have had to go to London, Paris, to seek life, to Amsterdam.
10:48And that's why this is a threat of presence, of pressure.
10:51We're pushing this regime, this system.
10:54Of course, we're pushing this regime.
11:08The majority of the protesters have been installed here since the last 26th of September
11:15and make sure that they will not march until they listen to their vindications.
11:20Their goal is to see the crisis of the living house in Spain in a moment of special tension political
11:26at the gates of the general election of the next month of November.
11:30Christina Tücker, for Euronews, Madrid.
11:32Thank you very much.
