00:00I had a lot of trouble staying awake during the second half,
00:02other than the fact that I was like,
00:03I can't believe they're blowing this lead.
00:05They jump out to a 35-18 lead first quarter.
00:08You're like, all right, maybe they do have this figured out.
00:10Good thing, man.
00:11How awesome is this for spoiling the party in Philadelphia?
00:15They only scored 18 points in the first quarter.
00:17We only scored 16 in the fourth.
00:20Like, what?
00:22Yes, we all think Philadelphia's a good team,
00:24but I watched that first half, and I was like,
00:27all right, well, maybe the Cavs figured out their ills.
00:29Maybe they, you know, Philadelphia, are they better than the Knicks?
00:32Well, they did the first game.
00:33They looked better than them.
00:35Second half of this game, again, the first half of this game,
00:40Evan Mobley with 14 points on nine shots,
00:44Jared Allen, or I should say Evan Mobley with 15 points on nine shots,
00:48Jared Allen with 14 points on nine shots.
00:50The second half of this game, Andy.
00:52Yes.
00:53Evan Mobley with three points on four shots,
00:57Jared Allen with zero points,
00:59on one shot.
01:02I mean, I don't even know what to say.
01:03All right, well, Allen, remember, wasn't supposed to,
01:05there was talk about him not even playing last night, so.
01:08Well, he played 15 minutes in this one.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Evan Mobley played 17 minutes and 33 seconds.
01:13In the first half.
01:14Oh, that's the second half.
01:16Oh, you're giving me second half.
01:17That was the second half that they proceeded to.
01:19Because Jared Allen ended up with 28 on the night,
01:21and then Mobley had 34.
01:22Right.
01:23Yeah.
01:24It just, it just disappeared into the abyss in the second half once again,
01:29as Philly applied pressure,
01:30and instead, as anyone who has played fifth grade or sixth grade basketball knows,
01:36when you get pressure, you pass through the pressure.
01:39You don't dribble through it.
01:40And they tried to dribble through it once again.
01:42It's just an old bad habit that needs to stop so fast.
01:46What was that?
01:48That's all you think it was?
01:49A bad habit against a good team?
01:50A team that kind of came in slow, and then,
01:54I mean, they looked a little cooked when they first came in last night.
01:57Philly did.
01:58Maybe that was after their first game, and, you know, now you got to home.
02:01I mean, how many times have we watched an NBA game
02:03where a team's up 35-18 in the first quarter?
02:06It happens all the time.
02:07Home team comes out, and they're a little flat.
02:09Road teams are like, oh, man, what's going to go on?
02:11You know the game's going to be closer than it was.
02:13But then they dropped 34 in the second.
02:15Second, I mean, what, 69 points in the first half?
02:21I look, I was in and out on the first half.
02:23I was listening to it on the radio.
02:25Then I came in on the second half, and I started watching,
02:28and I was just like, oh, man, they got this.
02:30And then all of a sudden it went, come on.
02:33What?
02:34And I don't want to get into overreaction theater
02:36for the first game of the year.
02:37Oh, it's going to be overreaction theater.
02:38That's the hard part.
02:39I go, oh, let's fire the head coach.
02:41Wow, wow.
02:41They lost 114.
02:43They blew it.
02:43You're not firing the head coach after one game of the season.
02:47Especially with a bench that, you know, other than like three names on there,
02:51you don't really, you're like, oh, yeah, yeah, he played.
02:53Well, I mean, it's a hodgepodge of players on the bench on top of that.
02:59I'm excited about Peyton Watson.
03:01I just don't, he's just like, he looked like he fit in there for a couple minutes.
03:05And then second half, it was like, ooh, what's going on here?
03:09Hey, like, hi, guys, Peyton, nice to meet you.
03:11And let's try to force the ball through the middle.
03:14And let's not move the ball.
03:16And all of those things that aggravated us last year.
03:20Like, how do you go back to Eastern Conference Finals so quick?
03:25Well, the M.O. is out there.
03:27Everybody knows what the scouting report says, which is you pressure Mitchell as he's bringing
03:32the ball up the floor.
03:33You pressure Harden as they bring the ball up the floor.
03:35They start dribbling and dribbling and dribbling.
03:37Then make an ill-advised pass.
03:39I mean, it was right there the entire game.
03:42And you kept seeing it in that second half because Philly started picking them up three-quarters
03:47court, full court.
03:48And you just witnessed is Peyton Watson had five turnovers in this game.
03:52James Harden had six turnovers in this game.
03:54Where have we read that story before?
03:56Donovan Mitchell had five turnovers in this game.
03:58Now, is some of that because they had the ball in their hands?
04:00Absolutely.
04:01But another chunk of it is very much the fact that the M.O. is out.
04:05Pressure high.
04:06They have a hard time bringing the ball over the floor and getting into the flow of their
04:10offense.
04:10They kind of just start panicking and dribbling and taking contested bad shots.
04:15It's frustrating to watch.
04:17It's extremely frustrating.
04:19It was almost like we had the ball.
04:21Take it down the floor.
04:22Or maybe we'll get one shot if we're lucky.
04:25If we're lucky, we're going to get one shot.
04:27You know, at the end of the game, still, they were still in it late.
04:30They still had a chance late to win the game.
04:32They just need to man up in the last two minutes.
04:35They didn't.
04:35And they lose their offense.
04:37That's the other side of this.
04:38That's what it was.
04:39It's so frustrating.
04:39They lose their offense.
04:41In the first half, you saw the ball getting shared all over the place.
04:44It was flying all over.
04:45In the second half, it just turned back into pound, pound, pound.
04:47Let me dribble, drive.
04:48Let me get mine.
04:49Okay.
04:49Try dump off pass.
04:50Oop, they read the dump off.
04:52You know, it just turned completely into the mess that we have seen a couple different times.
04:58And while you were hoping for some kind of evolution and innovation, it's not there yet.
05:04Because the thing is, we're all going to have a hard time remembering through this whole thing is it's game
05:09one of 82.
05:11And so I think the frustration is there, the annoyance is there, but it's one of those we may have
05:16to just take a big, deep breath.
05:18Just go, okay, it's one of 82.
05:21They're still figuring out how to use Peyton Watson.
05:24Is that what we take away from this first game then?
05:26Is that what you're saying?
05:27Like, let's just chill.
05:29It's one game.
05:30I did.
05:31You know how hard it is to lose a 29-point lead?
05:34It takes some skill.
05:35You have to put effort into losing a 29-point lead.
05:38It takes some talent.
05:40Yeah.
05:41I just, I was floored at the end of last night.
05:44I was just like, I can't believe they lost that game.
05:47I'm like, okay, one game, maybe they just.
05:49But the problem was, it was the way they lost.
05:52It felt just like the Eastern Conference Finals.
05:55I felt like it was like, oh, this is game eight of the, well, game five, right?
05:58Of the Eastern Conference Finals from last year.
06:02Yeah, it was a lot of bad contested shots.
06:05It was a lot of shots that they should not have been taking.
06:10They make it harder on themselves when they need to, when they panic.
06:14And they seem to just lose their identity when they're picked up full court.
06:18And it's just, someone needs to get a deep breath.
06:22And that was supposed to be James Harden.
06:23Well, that ain't the case.
06:24It's not James Harden.
06:25You're going to need to find somebody else who can be that deep breath that goes,
06:29Guys, we can get it over the timeline.
06:31We can get it over before eight seconds.
06:34And let's go.
06:35You know, let's run our offense.
06:38Let's get the ball humming.
06:39Let's become unpredictable instead of being predictable.
06:42Because clearly we're not good enough against the top tier teams to be this predictable.
06:48I'm just looking at how hard it is to blow a 29-point lead.
06:52There really haven't been that many teams that have done that.
06:55But in 2019, the Clippers came back from 31 in the postseason.
07:03During the regular season, there aren't many.
07:06There just aren't many games where that's happened.
07:112008, Dallas and Minnesota.
07:14Mavericks came back from 29.
07:17Spurs have come back from 29.
07:21I just, I can't believe, I'm looking at this.
07:24Like, it's not, it's a handful of games.
07:27It's one of the worst jokes in NBA history for a regular season game.
07:32Is it a joke?
07:33Right?
07:33That's fair to say it was a joke.
07:34Right?
07:35It has to be at that point, right?
07:36It just doesn't happen.
07:38There's only been one 30-point comeback.
07:41Well, I'm sorry.
07:42Two 30-point comebacks.
07:45One 30-point comeback, and the worst comeback, there was one 35 and then one 36.
07:51In 1996, the Jazz beat the Nuggets 107-103, and they had a 36-point lead.
08:00So, I guess it's not that bad.
08:02It could have been seven points worse.
08:04That's bad.
08:05It's a bad, bad loss.
08:07It's a really, really bad loss, and it leaves a really sour taste in your mouth to start a season.
08:11It's not that I, I mean, it's not that I don't, I still think we have a ton of talented
08:15players.
08:16Oh, yeah.
08:16I still think we're, you know, we're a playoff team.
08:18It's just a matter of where we land, but how do you start the season off with such a bitter
08:23taste in your mouth?
08:24It's one of 82.
08:25Right?
08:26We're going to have to tell ourselves that over and over again.
08:29It's one of 82.
08:32But, man, that's a bad one.
08:35Boy, oh boy, that is a bad one to start this with.
08:38And having LeBron on the other side, it kind of, like, I mean, we all know.
08:41See, that didn't even bug me.
08:42It did at the end.
08:43I don't know why, but I can understand it.
08:45I mean, I don't.
08:46What bugged me was watching James Harden play some good old matador defense.
08:50I mean, that bugged me more than anything is just watching the same thing that I've watched for the last
08:5420 years out of James Harden.
08:55His guys were blown by him on defense.
08:57Then just watching Jalen Brown get into the paint and continue to hit, you know, 17-footers from the foul
09:02line.
09:02You know, same with Tyrese Maxey.
09:04Those two figuring out how to play off each other with three minutes left.
09:07And then I'm watching this Cavaliers side of things where it just is not sharing whatsoever.
09:12It turns into whoever brings the ball up the floor gets to run the offense this time.
09:16And it's like, you're not going to win against top-tier teams if we're going to play.
09:19Okay, whoever crosses the floor with the ball in their hands gets to run their offense.
09:23Yay!
09:25So that's how this works.
09:26That was LeBron was on a team in 2017 here.
09:30Oh, and ignoring the two tall guys.
09:31Sorry.
09:32Yeah, that's true, too.
09:32LeBron was on a team here in 16-17 that came back from 26 down.
09:39But I think last night was, that was a playoff game, right?
09:42That was against Indiana, right?
09:43It was a playoff game.
09:46That's the biggest comeback LeBron's ever had in a game.
09:48So I guess, you know what, I can't get too mad at him for being super pumped at the end
09:52of the game.
09:53It was yesterday, but I was just like, I don't know.
09:55It's just salt in the wound, doesn't it?
09:57I don't know how you, how do you blow these big leads?
10:01And I want to, you know, you want to say, let's turn the page on last year.
10:05You're stuck.
10:06Yeah.
10:06You're stuck.
10:07Your thoughts on last night's season opener, I'm just curious.
10:09What do we take away from it?
10:11You talked about it.
10:12The bigs were forgotten in the second half.
10:14Andrew Siciliano's going to join us at 11.
10:16Tim May at high noon.
10:18We'll do two keys and a lock.
10:19We'll play the Todd Munkin press conference for you today.
10:22And of course, you know what we'll do.
10:24We'll do quick predicts and we'll talk about the Browns in Tennessee coming up on Sunday.
10:28You'll give us the score of the game and the headline for Monday morning.
10:31All of these great stories and you straight ahead on Baskin and Phelps with Dan Mennegan.
10:37Riley's in today too.
10:38216-474-0092.
10:40Baskin and Phelps.
10:40Baskin and Phelps.
