Michigan U.S. Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed (D-MI) takes aim at his opponent Mike Rogers (R-MI) over his private jet lifestyle, arguing that it reflects a growing disconnect between politicians and ordinary Americans. El-Sayed says that when politicians fly on private jets, life may seem amazing for them, but their experiences can be far removed from the struggles facing everyday people. The remarks highlight the contrast between political elites and working Americans as the Michigan Senate race draws attention. Watch El-Sayed’s criticism of Rogers and the debate over wealth, privilege, and political accountability.

00:00On Sunday, Donald Trump is going to come to Michigan at the invitation of Mike Rogers
00:12and John James.
00:18You might have seen yesterday we had a little debate, or I had a debate and he just pointed
00:26at me and said, well, he's Muslim.
00:30And there was a note that Mike Rogers said in the last debate, he said the last two years
00:35have been amazing.
00:42I want to ask you all, Wayne State, when you go pump your gas, do you feel like the last
00:46two years have been amazing?
00:49When you go to the grocery store, does it feel like the last two years have been amazing?
00:54When you hear notes about ice in your community, has it felt like the last two years have been
00:58amazing?
01:00When you go to try to see a doctor, if you can see a doctor, has it felt like the
01:05last two
01:05years have been amazing?
01:08When you think about the fact that we are now at a war, that we have no business fighting,
01:12has it felt like the last two years have been amazing?
01:16When you think about the fact that we are in a trade war with Canada and you pay an average
01:24of $5,600, does it feel like the last two years have been amazing?
01:29But here's the thing, if you're a millionaire from Florida and you've got a mansion and two
01:34yachts, which for some reason are in Maryland, maybe for you life is amazing.
01:42When you fly around in a private jet, maybe for you life is amazing.
01:48But that's exactly the disconnect in our politics that has become the problem.
01:53The very same people who want to tell us that it's all amazing have been pushing a politics
01:58of division, trying to tear us apart from one another.
02:02And here's the thing about it, when they're distracting you, it's because they're picking
02:05your pocket.
02:07They're picking your pocket by sending your tax dollars abroad to drop bombs on someone
02:13else rather than investing in your schools or your infrastructure or your healthcare.
02:17They're picking your pocket by trying to deny you a union that should be fighting for fair
02:22wages and good benefits.
02:28They're picking your pocket when they're gutting programs like Medicaid and the ACA and SNAP to
02:34pass a tax cut for the richest people in America in their one big ugly bill.
02:42And we've got an opportunity to stand up and push back.
02:47I don't have to tell you all this, but unions built the middle class.
02:55Unions built the 40-hour work week.
02:58Unions built the fact that our kids go to school instead of going to work.
03:04Unions built safe working conditions.
03:08And they can do it again if we're willing to stand with our unions.
03:12Which is why, when I get to the United States Senate, one of the first things I aim to do
03:17is finally pass that PRO Act.
