The UK Government has approved plans to begin drilling in the Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, who gave approval for the NSTA to grant consent for drilling, said the move will support the country’s energy security with homegrown gas this winter. 00:00This is about, and look, the key consideration for me in making this decision was partly energy
00:06security, because at a point when the conflict in the Middle East, which is triggering an energy
00:11crisis, is reinforcing the importance of homegrown energy we control, a project that delivers gas
00:19to our homes this month is important. But look, the second consideration for me was that this
00:25project was compatible with our legally binding climate commitments. And so I'm very clear
00:32that this project still allows us to meet our legal carbon limits and get to our end
00:38destination of net zero. And ultimately, look, the choice and the judgment is, as we transition
00:43to net zero, we're going to need gas. Our climate watchdog is also clear about that. So do we
00:49have gas produced on our doorstep, homegrown, or am I importing gas or oil from abroad where
00:57I can't put conditions on, for example, the emissions that come out of the production?
01:01And the common sense judgment for me is that it should be homegrown.
