00:00Hi, Pats. Winners of three in a row. You heard the final call on the feed with Billy Lanny.
00:0426-19. Pats take down the Jets yesterday. A mixed bag, to say the least, out of A.J. Brown
00:11yesterday.
00:12In fact...
00:13I don't know how mixed it was.
00:14Well, Carl in Boston wants to ask, and let me just... I'm taking this right off the subject line on
00:17the screen, Carl.
00:18Okay.
00:19Did A.J. Brown hurt or help yesterday? Carl, why don't you answer your own question?
00:23Did he hurt or help the Patriots yesterday?
00:26Actually, my question was going to be, as all Patriots fans, we were looking forward to the return of A
00:31.J. Brown and Gonzo.
00:33And my question, my general question was, what do you guys... I want your opinion on the effect that both
00:39of those guys had on the game.
00:41Oh, Gonzo was good.
00:42Gonzo, I thought, was pretty good. Gave up a couple grabs, but I mean, we have such a high standard
00:46for him.
00:46It's almost a surprise when he's in the area of a catch. Like, that's how good he is.
00:50Omar Cooper was the one that had the big game, but Garrett Wilson, who we were more like, that's the
00:54guy.
00:55Four catches, 44 yards. I don't know if you ever heard him post-game.
00:58He spoke very highly of Gonzalez.
01:01Wilson did?
01:02Yeah.
01:02Oh, I missed that.
01:02And he was talking about, like, he looks forward to those challenges, and how, like, that could be a matchup
01:07for years to come, and blah, blah, blah.
01:08But, like, I had a lot of nice things to say about him.
01:10So, no, I thought Gonzalez was good, and it was obviously a help.
01:13Just to give you the numbers, Terp had these last night, per NextGenStats.
01:16Christian Gonzalez matched up on Garrett Wilson on 17 roots in Week 6, 12 of them in man coverage.
01:20He allowed two catches for 20 yards on two targets.
01:23So, like, that's about as good as you can expect in that matchup.
01:26Yeah, you're stuffing him out, because we like Wilson a lot.
01:28That, by the way, is the fewest targets, receptions, and yards Gonzalez is allowed to Wilson anytime they've matched up.
01:33Meanwhile, I mean, A.J. Brown, very glaring.
01:37You know, he just dropped everything.
01:39It was hard to watch, and then you almost couldn't believe it at the end of the game when he's
01:44out there on the hands team,
01:45and the Jets did the thing where they went down and kicked a field goal.
01:47That's fine, and then it was a two-possession game, and then it hits him right in the hands,
01:52and he can't secure it, and Pop Douglas has to bail him out.
01:56So, yeah, just a game that he's going to want to forget completely.
01:59And just like when a quarterback throws a bunch of interceptions, you wonder,
02:03all right, what's this going to look like Thursday?
02:04So, a quick turnaround.
02:05He doesn't have to think about it for too long.
02:06I guess that's a positive.
02:08But that first slant route on Thursday night that they throw to A.J. Brown,
02:13if he doesn't catch it, does that start to get into his head a little bit?
02:17Because I think somebody like him can be like, you can lean on your track record a little bit.
02:21Like, the guy's had an awesome career.
02:23He's caught plenty of passes.
02:24He has, but I'll say this again.
02:26A.J. Brown played for a half against Seattle.
02:27I thought he looked good.
02:28His last two full games, okay, because he didn't finish that Seattle game.
02:32I don't know if he's going to catch everything for the rest of that game.
02:34His last two full games, the three drops that he was credited with yesterday,
02:38which I think was more like four or five,
02:41and he was out there on the hands team trying to catch the onside kick.
02:45That one's on Vrabel.
02:46Five or six, seven or eight.
02:47Why the hell he was out there, as you were just illustrating?
02:49I have no idea.
02:50But so, he fought the football all day yesterday.
02:52It was obvious.
02:53And Vrabel puts him out there on the onside kick like a moron.
02:56And then his last game in Philly,
02:58this is a huge narrative in Philly on the way out the door.
03:01They lost to the Niners.
03:02He had three huge drops in that playoff.
03:04So, I think there's a long track record of success, Keefe.
03:07Of course.
03:08But is it fair to say the last two full games he's played,
03:10he's dropped just about everything thrown his way?
03:12Yeah.
03:13That's what's happened.
03:14And so, you just need to stack good games on top of each other.
03:19And it's reminiscent to me, too, Drake May,
03:20where he couldn't help but turn it over the first three weeks of the season.
03:24And then look what he's done the last three weeks.
03:26The guy's been fantastic.
03:27He's had a couple of great, big signature win against Buffalo.
03:31And then lighten up the scoreboard against the Raiders.
03:34And then even in this game, it wasn't the prettiest by a long shot.
03:37But he still threw three touchdowns with no Mac Hollins.
03:41Romeo Dobbs gets hurt on the second play of the game, basically.
03:44And then A.J. Brown couldn't catch anything for him.
03:47So, he still had to rely on Hunter Henry, who had some big catches,
03:51Pop Douglas.
03:51Kyle Williams had a huge conversion for him.
03:54And then he's handing the ball off to Corey, the running back.
03:56So, like, when he started the year, probably thinking of, like,
03:59who am I going to be targeting?
04:00Who am I going to be in the huddle with?
04:02It's like, well, guess what?
04:03You've already played 10, 11 offensive linemen.
04:05You're going through all your different receivers and running backs.
04:08And yet, he still had a really good game.
04:09I mean, Corey, the running back.
04:11I agree.
04:12Because his numbers, I think, was great.
04:13He was 18 of 32.
04:15But you circle it right back to A.J. Brown.
04:17You're like, the completion percentage is a lot higher if Brown can catch.
04:21And they score more points.
04:22I mean, you're talking about easy, easy 30s, maybe even 40 points if he catches.
04:27And he easily throws for 300 yards just on the one up the right sideline
04:31that could have been a touchdown that Brown couldn't track.
04:33In real time, I'm like, oh, he got loose.
04:35And then you're like, what was that?
04:36He dropped the touchdown.
04:37There was another slant that we both, I'm surprised it was overturned on replay.
04:41But there were more plays than that.
04:43But still, still, Drake was 18 out of 32, three touchdowns, no picks.
04:47He had the one play where he flipped it out into the flat that didn't like that one.
04:50It could have been a turnover.
04:51Didn't care for that one.
04:53235, quarterback rating of 111.
04:55QBR, we said he was the first quarterback to go 90-plus.
04:58Two weeks in a row, he just missed 89.2.
05:01He's thrown three touchdowns, three-plus touchdowns in three straight wins.
05:04He's the first Patriots quarterback to do that since Brady in 17.
05:07And that's a good defense on the Jets side.
05:09He had one really big scramble.
05:10He did.
05:10He had one monster scramble.
05:11So that's a good Jets defense on the other side.
05:13They are top 10 still in scoring defense after the week.
05:16They were tied for fifth going into it.
05:18Drake deserves full marks for that.
05:19We can get into it with all your phone calls.
05:21617-779-7937.
05:23A.J.
05:24Brown after the game.
05:25Keith, I give him credit.
05:26He faced the music.
05:27He stood up there and answered a bunch of questions and said all the right things.
05:30Give me a little bit of A.J.
05:31Brown after the game if we could, Nick.
05:34He, like many of us, feel there's more there from A.J.
05:37Brown after a rough first full game with the Pats.
05:39I didn't play good.
05:42I don't know.
05:43My timing was off.
05:46I'm much better than what I put on display today.
05:48There's no excuses.
05:51I'll be better.
05:52Okay.
05:52So he says no excuses there.
05:53But he says timing was off.
05:55And so I guess the hope glass half full would be, all right, timing was off.
05:59Kind of similar to a lot of the Patriots the first couple weeks.
06:01Do you think the timing was off?
06:02Or do you think he wasn't catching the ball?
06:04That's what I like.
06:04He couldn't catch.
06:05Like, he got open.
06:07So if you had to pick your poison here, like him getting zero separation, but coming up
06:14with a couple of, like, contested grabs, or him getting wide open a few times and having
06:18bad drops.
06:19What's, like, what's more correctable?
06:21Yeah.
06:21Yeah.
06:22The drops.
06:22Yeah.
06:23Definitely the drops.
06:24Yeah.
06:25I think that's the whole.
06:26But again, you do that too many more times, and it's like, all right, great, you're getting
06:29open, but the name of the game is catching it.
06:33It's always a bad sign when you can't keep track of how many drops you have.
06:36We had somebody tweet in earlier today.
06:38I think it was Cole.
06:40This next clip from A.J.
06:41Brown reminded him of Antonio Cromartie trying to remember all of his kids.
06:45Phillip Rivers trying to remember all of his kids.
06:47There's just so many.
06:48How do you even keep them straight?
06:50Jay, when you said you're better than the way you played today, do you think the coming
06:54back from the injury had an effect on that?
06:56No.
06:57Like, again, no excuses.
06:59Regardless of if I was sitting down or if I've been going, you know, I expect myself to
07:02make each and one of those plays.
07:04The goal ball, the drop, the other drop on third down on the slant, you know, I'm more
07:11than capable of making those catches, and, you know, and I'd be better.
07:15The goal ball.
07:15There's also the other one.
07:16The drop.
07:17Don't forget the other one.
07:17There's that other one.
07:18What about the onside kick?
07:21I mean, it was not good.
07:23No, it's a bad sign when you're running out of fingers to count all the drops that you
07:27had.
07:27Oh, there was that one.
07:28That was a big play.
07:29In the game yesterday.
07:30One text here.
07:32Guys, we need to chill with the overreacting on A.J.
07:35Brown.
07:35Let's not chase him out of town.
07:36No, he's not chasing anybody out of town.
07:38Shaking my head.
07:39He'll be fine.
07:40Remember this text.
07:41We did the same with Drake the first three weeks.
07:43Yeah.
07:43Right.
07:43And we also weren't running him out of town.
07:46And we were like, he'll be he'll be better.
07:48We said he's the guy.
07:49We expect him to turn it around.
07:51It's taking a while.
07:52And so we were critical of him while he wasn't doing it.
07:54I would say the same thing with A.J.
07:55Brown.
07:55Do I expect him to turn it around?
07:57Yeah.
07:57I expect him to be able to catch.
07:59Because think about this.
07:59It's Romeo Dobbs week one.
08:01Horrible debut.
08:03And we're like, all right.
08:04How do you how do you snap out of that?
08:07How do you start to feel better about the player?
08:08He's going to have to have some good games.
08:10Good catches.
08:10And he has.
08:11Now, I still think there's like a ceiling on Romeo Dobbs.
08:14But you took whatever you thought he was going to be.
08:16But then you were so underwhelmed and disappointed with how the first game played.
08:20But then he bounced back.
08:21Same thing with A.J.
08:22Brown, except my expectation for him is like five times as much as what is for Dobbs.
08:28Yeah.
08:28And then this was even worse.
08:30So it's like you're starting from a lower point.
08:32Or at least the return game is from a lower point.
08:35But, I mean, I wouldn't rule out him having a good game on Thursday.
08:38Me neither.
