00:00Now joining us on the guest line here on a Patriots Monday on WEI Afternoons is Drake May.
00:05Drake May is brought to you by Northeast Men's Health, the experts in treating men's sexual health
00:09with six New England offices or at northeastmenshealth.com. By Windward Mental Health,
00:14start your healing journey now at windwardmentalhealth.com. And by John Sewer and Drain
00:19Cleaning, the name to know when your drains don't flow. Drake May, I almost can't even ask you how
00:25you're doing this week. How could you be doing badly? You're in a four-game winning streak.
00:28You're in the second seed in the conference. You completed 21 of 23 passes. Safe to say you're
00:33having fun these days? Trying to. We've got to keep it up. But yes, sir. Big win yesterday and
00:40we've got a tough challenge this week. So it should be some fun. Let's start at the beginning of that
00:44game yesterday where you guys ran the ball. Chunk play after chunk play to Ramondre Stevenson.
00:49Something I know you guys have been saying is close. Josh has been telling us. Patience.
00:53And it was working early on there. When you see that kind of success on the ground as a
00:58quarterback, are you thinking, oh, this is going to pay off because this is going to open play
01:02action passing game. And this is really going to make this offense that much tougher to deal with?
01:09Yeah, I think that's what you can think. I was really just thinking, hey, keep on feeding them.
01:12Keep on feeding the run game. That's what I was thinking during the game. Just keep giving it. And those
01:16guys were, you know, give Andre some room and they were making plays. So that's what I was thinking
01:21during the game. Just keep on running it. Drake, what does it mean to you
01:25now, you know, 18, 19 starts into your career, not even halfway through your second season in the NFL
01:31to be achieving such statistical rarities every week, you know, earning your name in all of these
01:38graphics on television and social media next to Dan Marino, Tom Brady, Joe Montana. I mean,
01:46you're on such a statistical roll right now. It's almost like we've never seen before.
01:51Yeah, I think one of the best things that Coach Brable was saying this week, you know,
01:57playing the Titans last week was, you know, stuff that's interesting versus important. I think all
02:01that stuff is interesting and it's cool to be, you know, in those graphics and whatever you
02:05mentioned. But I think what's important is trying to keep it going, keep on winning games. And
02:09you've got a home stretch here. So looking forward to getting back in front of the home crowd and
02:13give these, you know, home fans something to cheer for.
02:16Do you consider yourself a perfectionist? And I ask that because last night when the media and your press
02:20conference told you, you were 21 of 23, you set the record for completion percentage. You were
02:25like, yeah, but there was a couple I'd like to have back, a couple I made bad decisions on.
02:28Do you consider yourself a perfectionist?
02:31I think it's the nature of playing this position. You want to be, you want to be perfect and you're
02:36never going to achieve it and you're going to try. But yeah, there's times where I feel like I
02:40tucked it and I had some guys open and there's, you know, one on the sideline I missed,
02:43tied to Kyle and one of the first, third downs. So there's still stuff we left out on tape. And
02:48I'm thinking the fourth quarter, we can do a better job of, you know, really putting them away. And
02:52really from that standpoint, that's how you got to look at it and
02:55still try to learn from these wins that we do, do, you know, keep stacking.
03:00Let's go back to what I think most of us believe to be, well, some might say it was the pass to
03:04digs on the sideline. But to me, it was the deep ball, 39-yard touchdown to Kayshaun Booty late in the
03:10second quarter that was the pass of the day. I think you guys needed that touchdown right there
03:14to really kind of rest control away from the Titans because they were up early on you,
03:1810-3. Take us through that, how that one evolved. Booty said that you guys practiced that one all
03:25week. And I was just curious if you knew that on the TV broadcast, Jason McCourty said right before
03:32you took the snap, step back and hucked it 55 yards, that he was guaranteed sure that Josh McDaniels
03:38was going to slow play the drive and make sure you guys ended with the ball in your hands trying
03:42to score right as the clock expired.
03:45No, I didn't see that. That's funny. She really was just trying to score a touchdown,
03:50usually kind of in a two-minute scenario. You try to, you always take a shot deep to try to get a
03:56touchdown. We did the same thing last week in New Orleans. And, you know, it's true. I think
04:00they gave some opportunity. We took advantage of it. But yeah, what a catch. I saw the replay of
04:05the catch with Kayshawn. Golly, that was a heck of a catch. And, you know, I think you're always
04:11trying to come out with points. And, you know, they say the term double dip after halftime. They
04:15get points before and after. And we did that. So from there, I think the mindset to try to score
04:21points and they give a touchdown. That's what we're going for.
04:26Patriots quarterback Drake May here on a Patriots Monday on WEI Afternoons. Whether it's that catch,
04:31which I agree with you, heck of a catch. I actually thought you overthrew him when I saw
04:35it live. I was like, oh, I missed him. And then right on the fingertips, he snares it.
04:38Or even the throw to Austin Hooper, where he kind of mossed the defensive back. When you
04:43see guys make those plays for you, do you sort of bank that? And does that make you even
04:48more confident next time? Oh, next time? Yeah, there's a guy on him, but I know he'll
04:52make a play for me. Is that confidence in the making?
04:54Yeah, I think it's 100%. I think that's, you know, it gets confidence in me throwing
05:00to him. You know, there's been numerous times, you know, throughout the entire year. I remember
05:04the hunters catch over the middle against Buffalo, you know, up and got it. Kayshon's
05:08made some great grabs on the sideline and Ig's getting his feet in and pop with the one
05:13hander yesterday. I think that's just, you know, just keeps on going back to, you know,
05:18then making plays for me. I think that's what my job is to do, give them a chance to make
05:21plays. And that's what we preach in that room and they're continuing to do it.
05:25Let's talk about Mike Vrabel for a minute, if we can. Obviously, a very emotional day
05:29for him, though. He tried to downplay it all week long, heading back to where he used to
05:32work and prowl the sidelines for six years. Can you sort of talk about how that emotion
05:38spilled over onto you and especially the team? You know, seemed like both your postgame
05:43press conference, which we heard live last night on our postgame show, and then that video
05:48the Patriots circulated on social media afterwards where you gave him a game ball. Seemed like
05:52you were a little bit emotional there as well yourself. What kind of seems like
05:57he's having a real profound impact on you, Drake?
06:01Yeah, I think it meant a lot to us, you know, him downplaying, not making a big deal. And
06:08what I was hinting at earlier, what's interesting versus what's important. And he cared about us.
06:12He cared about his team. And he said that was in the past. And now he's moved on. He's worried
06:16about us. And so we love playing for coach. And I know I had a similar experience back in high
06:22school when I left my old high school and played my old high school in a game and we beat him. And
06:28I know it's not the level of what coach had being a head coach in the NFL, but I know that it just
06:34means more. And we know it means more for him and go back to a place where he's had history and great
06:39success. So we wanted to win it for him. And I think it was cool to see him kind of care in the
06:48locker room and social emotion. You are the captain. You're the quarterback. But were you also a little
06:52bit nervous in that game ball presentation? Because you're still just 23. And this is Mike
06:57Frabel. There's a lot of grown men circled around you. Were you a little nervous there?
07:02I wouldn't say that. I think you just say what comes to mind and whatever's on your
07:05on, you know, comes to mind, whatever on your heart. I think that's always something that's
07:09safe to go with. So that's, that's been my mindset of anytime getting up in front of the team
07:16or inside the hotel, breaking them down. And I think that's the best way to approach it. Just be
07:20yourself. So Drake, obviously you, uh, 21 or 23 in passing yesterday, but you had a bunch of runs
07:25too. You're the second leading rusher, uh, had over 60 yards on the ground and took a couple of
07:30dings as well during the day. How are you feeling today? And, um, any, any sort of talk with Josh or
07:38Mike about avoiding that afterwards or anything you can do to try to make sure that, uh, to keep you on
07:42the field and on the sidelines and out of the little blue tent. Yeah. I think that's important
07:46is being smart, you know, being smart and knowing, you know, when to get down. And, um, I slid a
07:51couple of times yesterday and probably should have slid some more, but, uh, no, I'm feeling good
07:55today and, um, feeling good to go for, um, get back out there practice this week. Do you worry
08:01about your head or is that just something when you play the game of football that, you know,
08:05can be an issue where we're all familiar with CTE and concussions and all that, but you have to kind
08:10of put it out of mind to play the game. Do you worry about it? Yeah. I think that's
08:15something that you try to, um, you know, really try to think of a lot, you know, in this sport
08:22we play, you know, it's a, it's a brutal sport and, you know, we put our, our life on the line
08:27out there and we know that, you know, the benefits of it, you know, they're paying us a lot of
08:31money to play this game. And, uh, really, I think, you know, you're playing to win. So I
08:36think at, you know, whatever costs, you know, third or fourth down or trying to get a first
08:39down or in the end zone is, um, I'm willing to put on the line for the team.
08:45One of the things, uh, that we've seen happen is you continually establish different kinds
08:50of relationships and chemistry with the receivers. You know, it's good with the tight ends. Now
08:54you and digs have something going, had something early with pop as well. Um, and obviously the
08:59deep ball with Kayshawn booty is excellent right now. We keep hearing that Kyle Williams is next
09:04in line, that he's really close to like making an impact on the game. Do you feel like that
09:08connection is near jumping out to the next level for you guys?
09:14Yeah. He's doing all the right things. He's, uh, he's knowing where to line up. He's, um,
09:19making plays in practice. He's making a lot of plays in practice on the scout team. So
09:23he's just keep on doing the right things and, um, he's got the right mindset so he can help
09:27us. And we're just, uh, yeah, we're, uh, decided to see what he can do in the future for us.
09:32I don't know if it annoyed you at the time, but you probably remember a question I asked
09:36you about desire to win or the drive to win early in the year. I've taken a lot of heat
09:41for that. Um, and the more you win, the more, it seems like a dumb question that I asked you
09:45back then. But now I want to ask you a different question that I've talked to a lot of athletes
09:49about over the years. Do you like winning more or do you hate losing more?
09:54Yeah, I think you, I think I, I hate losing. I think hating losing, um, is what I've kind
10:02of, uh, throughout my, you know, any sports career, I think, especially in, um, a team
10:08sport, you know, losing feeling, um, it hurts and it's, uh, it's not a good feeling. So
10:15winning is, isn't enjoyable and fun, but it's still, um, some things to work on and losing,
10:20then, you know, you, you didn't put your best foot out there and, um, it's all that
10:24work you put into it. You want to come out on top.
10:27Uh, with all the praise that's been coming your way recently, obviously pregame shows,
10:32postgame shows, national media, radio guys, everyone has been sending a lot of sunshine
10:37your way for the season that you're having. I'm just kind of curious who in your life right
10:41now is like your perspective checker or who like make sure that you like stay in line
10:46and, and don't get too high on everything. Is it your wife, um, your brothers who famously
10:52roasted you on my brothers, my brothers will be there for the rest of my, the rest of my
10:56life. They're always in the group chatter on FaceTime saying, you know, you had a guy
11:03open deep. My brothers at the game yesterday saying I had a guy open deep late in the game.
11:06So, um, they'll always be there to, as the older brothers to, um, just remind me of, yeah,
11:14yeah, exactly. So I'll be always, they've always done that my whole life. So I enjoy it.
11:19Well, tell them that Jason McCourty on the telecast said he's never seen anyone throw deep
11:24balls better than you. So your brothers must have really high standards. Um, I want to ask
11:29you something about Mike Vrabel. You gave him the game ball. It's clear. You guys love your coach.
11:33Like we can just observe and see how much you care and appreciate for your coach. Has anything
11:37surprised you about playing for Mike Vrabel? Because I, I covered him as a player and I thought he
11:43was more of a hard O than this. He seems to have a little bit more of a loving style of coaching
11:47or supportive style of coaching than I thought he might, but has anything surprised you through
11:52this, to this point playing for Mike Vrabel? No, I would say surprise. You're just kind of
11:57learning your head coach as you go about it. I don't think, you know, much of a surprise.
12:00You're just kind of learning, um, you know, what he expects out of us each week. Um, how much
12:05he's going to challenge us and coach us. And then, uh, how much he cares about us at the end of
12:09the day, um, and sees the big picture of wanting to get the best out of us and, uh, want to do it
12:14in his way. And, uh, what do you feel like it's best for the team? So looking forward, Drake,
12:20obviously you guys, I think a lot of us are surprised, but it's awesome to see you guys are
12:24the number two seat in the conference sitting at five and two, uh, four game win streak, three road
12:29wins in a row. First time the franchise has ever accomplished that. So congrats. And now you come
12:34home for, I think a couple of tougher tilts than people anticipate with Atlanta coming up in a few
12:40weeks, but then Cleveland this Sunday as well. Uh, how's, how's this, uh, how's this little gauntlet
12:45of these two home games followed by Tampa looking at you right now? Yeah, I think it's, it's tough
12:51stretch. It's just tough stretch, um, for us going to be offensively, you know, the, the Cleveland's
12:57really good on defense. Um, Atlanta does some great stuff. Um, but yeah, I think just focusing on
13:01Cleveland and, um, trying to get back out there in front of a home crowd and, um, kind of keep on
13:06making one of our goals is, is being a, uh, make it tough to play at our place. And that's what we're
13:10trying to do. Um, we know we got a tough challenge first, first Cleveland on defense. They're playing
13:14well. Uh, I saw the report that you hosted the, uh, offensive line dinner this week. Um, some
13:20hibachi. Uh, how did that go? Is it safe to say there were not squirt guns filled with sake being
13:25shot around the room? Is that not okay? How'd that go? Yeah, that was, that wasn't, we told
13:32about you guys, that wasn't the vibe. We're just trying to get some food and, and, uh, camaraderie.
13:37So it was good. And your wife made dessert. I read that detail. She made some homemade desserts
13:42for everybody. That's pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah. She's trying to, uh, I think they liked themselves.
13:49They're probably supposed to make some more for them, uh, pretty soon in the upcoming weeks.
13:52All right, Andy, should we welcome him into his favorite new segment? Let's go. It's may or may
13:57not time. All right, Drake. So as you know, uh, okay, well, it's good to know that that's your
14:07all shucks for it. Uh, all right. So every week I want to ask you a couple of questions as we help
14:10get to know you, Drake may or may not, of course, may means yes. May not means no. Um, based off of,
14:16I'll go first based off of your hibachi dinner with your teammates last week, may or may not next time
14:22you have the offensive line over hire a sushi chef. Sushi. Ooh, I probably think that's a may.
14:30I'm not a huge sushi fan, but I know the guys are. So whatever the guys want, that's, that's,
14:34that's a possibility. Okay. Nice. Uh, in light of the trip to Nashville, country music may or may not
14:41may. Yeah. Big country music, big country music fan. You got any favorites or your favorites?
14:47Ooh, favorites. Uh, Luke comes from my hometown. Um, Eric church, big fan, Jason Aldean. Um,
14:59I went to Morgan wall on concert recently. He was good. So I like listening to everybody.
15:03All right. We can maybe have a little rejoin there with some of your favorites here during the
15:07segment, uh, may or may not enjoy a good cry while watching an emotional movie.
15:12may not. No, I'm not a very, um, emotional cry or watching movies. My wife is, but not me.
15:20All right. And last one for this week, pumpkin spice. It is the season pumpkin spice may or may not
15:26may. I love, I love pumpkin, uh, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie. I'm a big pumpkin fan.
15:33Nice. All right. Time now for the quarterback question of the week, which is brought to you by
15:37Northeast men's health, the experts in treating men's sexual health with six new England offices,
15:41or at Northeast men's health.com. Kyle and Kingston wants to know, what did you think of your little
15:48taste of Massachusetts high school football on Friday night lights? I was impressed. I was
15:54impressed. I think, uh, you know, two, two good teams as a, it was a great game. I ended up on game
16:00winning field goal and was impressed with the crowd. It was, uh, it was awesome to get back into high
16:04school sports and, and, uh, you know, take a look back at, uh, reminding me of my days playing high
16:09school. So it was fun to, to go out there and watch. Can I ask you what, uh, like, did you,
16:14did you reach peak selfie or peak handshake, high five or autograph? Like, or, or were people cool with
16:19you? Oh, it wasn't too bad. I mean, a few fish bumps and selfies, but, um, it was cool.
16:28Massachusetts high school football on par with North Carolina.
16:31Uh, I think that'd be interesting. I think that'd be interesting. I think Charlotte,
16:37you know, Charlotte football and North Carolina football is a little bit slept on in my opinion,
16:41but, uh, I was impressed up here. I think it'd be some good games.
16:44All right, man. Appreciate you having a little fun with us. Uh, maybe we'll get you a pumpkin spice
16:48latte if we're ever in studio with you again and, uh, good luck against the Browns and, uh,
16:52Miles Garrett this week.
16:55Thank you guys. Go pass.
16:56Thanks, Drake. Patriots quarterback, Drake May here on W.E.I. Afternoons.
