House of Zen is a deeply personal Bali home renovation that turns an abandoned old house in Sayan Ubud into a warm, family-focused retreat. Eszter and Andras, award-winning documentary filmmakers, share how they moved to Bali during the pandemic, welcomed their daughter, and chose to renovate instead of building new so the trees, rice fields, and surrounding ecosystem could remain intact.

Inside, every corner tells a story: round windows and bevel-glass doors that catch the light, bamboo-covered ceilings, antique Dutch colonial pieces from Java, handmade ceramic lamps from Hungary, and locally made volcanic stone and cement tiles built for everyday family life. Upstairs, a sculptural staircase leads to a bright living room among the trees, a mustard-yellow family bedroom, a moody raku-tile shower, and a copper bathtub on the balcony with jungle, volcano, and starlight views.

The episode blends interior design, Bali architecture, sustainable renovation, and a lived-in family home tour with a creative, grounded feel. It is ideal for viewers who enjoy home makeover stories, tropical house tours, slow design inspiration, and thoughtful renovation content rooted in place and craft.

00:00Hello Bali interiors, I'm Esther and I'm András. Welcome to our home. Please take a peek in our paradise.
00:23We came to Bali in the middle of the pandemic to welcome our daughter here.
00:28We came for four months for the birth and that was four years ago because everything just fell into its
00:35place.
00:35It was almost like a puzzle. The way we felt welcomed on this island by the people and by its
00:41culture and the religion and everything.
00:43And it was really a war zone that was totally abandoned all the way throughout the renovation.
00:48The only person who didn't really believed it was Esther. So our whole family is really grateful and very proud
00:53of what you did.
00:55I couldn't imagine what it would have become. But projects are scary, so no wonder you were afraid of this
01:02project.
01:03Because they're big things and they stir up a family's life completely. That's the reality of a project.
01:09Whether it's a renovation or building something from scratch, it really challenges.
01:27So this is our living space. The first idea I had were these round windows and these metal and glass
01:36doors with the beveled glasses because those reflect the light in a very nice way. So that was the first
01:41idea.
01:42There was a picture. And then when I saw how the construction was going with all these big beams,
01:48of course, it came very easily to have very high ceilings and to cover them with bedeg, which is a
01:54very local thing from bamboo.
02:06One more thing that I've collected a lot of antiques from Java, from the colonial times, like this is a
02:13very old traveling box from the Dutch colonial era.
02:18My goal was just to create an oasis where we can really relax and rest.
02:45So this is like the most important space, of course, where the whole family hangs out and which becomes a
02:52mess every single day. So it's the kitchen, the bar area, the living room. And you know, like you use
02:59small tile manufacturers in Bali where they put these beautiful colors on volcanic stones and everything is local.
03:17This little ceramic lamps have a special story. When this house was just a dream. I have a friend in
03:24Hungary, I'm Hungarian, who is very talented with ceramics. And I asked her to make all kinds of crazy parts
03:30for future lamps. And she came up with these funny shapes. And me and my son were just playing around
03:35endlessly, creating all the
03:37all kinds of lamps, you know, all kinds of lamps, you know, because you can put them in so many,
03:40so many ways. So this is very special for me. And it's something I brought from my country, but we've
03:45made it with my son, who actually also really enjoys interior design. This is our story here in Bali.
04:00So the tiles here on the living room floor, they're traditional cement tiles manufactured in Bali. Still interesting, but still
04:09natural and something that doesn't show a lot of dirt because of my kids.
04:23The most important piece for me in this new building is the stairs reminds me of the whole process, how,
04:31you know, slowly you make your home and how many amazingly talented craftsmen I worked with, which I really enjoy
04:39going up every day. Also, my kids really enjoy feeling the
04:43the rhythm of the rhythm of these stairs. Okay, so let's go upstairs. There is the master bedroom and the
04:50small living room up there.
05:09So this is our upstairs living room and this is where you're among the trees and you see this beautiful
05:17view of the island.
05:19And when we're lucky, we even see a lot of volcanoes. So we designed a big built-in couch here
05:27for friends and family members to chill.
05:30There are very nice sunsets here for all these rugs and pillows from Clothes by Medina, which are done with
05:36natural dyes and everything is handmade.
05:40And there is so much beauty. Look, even the dog loves to destroy everything.
05:54So this is the master bathroom or as I like to call it, the copper tub on the balcony where
06:01you can see the stars and even sometimes the full moon.
06:04For me, this was the most difficult part to do in the house because I imagined the top and, you
06:11know, that it's going to be copper.
06:14And then I found these amazing tiles, but I had to put them together one by one.
06:19So it was a friend of mine and me who laid out the whole wall of the tiles on this
06:25floor.
06:26And then my nice colleagues were putting them on the wall and I always find it, oh my God, it's
06:30too red.
06:31It's too red. Although it's a burgundy. The most important thing is that we're connected to nature.
06:36And we're at the tree canopy and we can see bamboo and jungle and, you know, be connected to this
06:44beautiful island.
06:52I've never done a yellow bedroom and I thought for up here with so much light, this mustard yellow will
07:01suit our family very nicely because it gives a really, really friendly atmosphere.
07:05So usually we put another bed here and then the four of us just sleep in this bedroom and I
07:11just wanted a cozy environment for us to sleep in as a family.
07:30So this is the shower. This is the second part of our bathroom.
07:34And this one I really wanted to make it moody and dark.
07:40Using these amazing Raku tiles are really my favorite part of the house to see the reflection of the light
07:46on these tiles.
07:47And my son is a little herpetologist. He loves snakes.
07:52So I really custom made the snake mirror for him and he was very, very happy about it, that he
07:57can brush his teeth in front of the snake mirror.
08:00It's a delight to work with such talented people.
08:07So I found this very nice pattern. I think it's originally an Indian pattern, but in the next village in
08:15front of us, there are a lot of amazing artists who do art with bricks, which is so common in
08:21Bali with the Batamera.
08:22They worked here for a very, very long time until they created this beautiful piece of art.
08:35So let us show you the other building.
08:39So this corridor is pretty special for us because it was a complete open air terrace with no privacy.
08:49So it gives us a lot of thought, like how to cover it.
08:53So you still have the light coming through and the corridor becomes an experience.
08:57And this is how it turned out to be.
09:08OK, so this is the original building or the old building.
09:12And although we have redone everything and this bedroom, I'm always thinking, when are we going to have the chance
09:19to sleep here without the kids?
09:21You know, just try the two of us because it never happened. Only our friends stayed here.
09:25But I think this is like a really nice couple's bedroom.
09:36The way the land is not very much respected in some cases in Bali and how rice fields disappear and
09:43forests disappear completely and new huge hotels and villas are coming up.
09:48It was a conscious decision not to build anything new.
09:52We wanted an old house.
09:53Take over an old house and renovate it and protect it and turn it to our home and not to
10:00build something completely new in place of trees or rice fields.
10:06And, you know, we are guests on this island, let's face it.
10:09We are not owners of this land.
10:11I really like the concept that we're here as a long term guest.
10:14And, you know, we add something to it, but the culture adds so much to us.
10:19And this is very, very important for us that we don't, they're not here to colonize or to destroy or
10:24whatever, but to kind of try to live in harmony with what we got on this island.
10:40Yeah, when I sit in this bathroom, it makes me think of the very, very long process, how we created
10:46it and how all the elements came together and how many eclectic styles came together here.
10:51I really, really like the warm colors, you know, this bathtub was here originally.
10:57And it's interesting.
10:58Sometimes you have to redo things like this bathtub was done three times until it reached this form.
11:03So, you know, when you see a bathroom, it's ready.
11:06It's beautiful.
11:06It works.
11:08But, oh man, we tried very hard, but at the end, I'm very happy with it.
11:20So this is our blue room.
11:22It's a little bit different than anything else in the house, but I really like the blue and green colors.
11:28And this is a guest room.
11:30And yeah, it's usually a very cozy space where guests really like to stay.
11:43So there is this bathroom here.
11:45What I really, really like to do is to upcycle things.
11:49And of course, nothing used to look like this, but there were some original vanities with some marble, which I
11:57really didn't like.
11:58So what we did, we just covered the marble with terrazzo, which is a little bit brave because I don't
12:03know how long is it going to last, but I hope for a long time.
12:05I just use this very, very simple Bali green stone, which people also use for pools.
12:11For me, it's a very nice raw finishing and it's inexpensive and it just comes out to be beautiful.
12:42Thank you Bali interiors for couple therapy and taking a peek into our paradise.
12:47See you guys soon.
12:48Bye bye.
12:49Bye.
12:49Bye.
12:49Bye.
