In the year 1233 Pope Gregory IX issued a official papal decree called Vox in Rama. This document was sent to King Henry of Germany and aimed to wipe out a growing satanic cult in the region. However the text included a very strange detail that changed European history forever.
The decree claimed that devil worshippers used black cats during their secret rituals. Because of this claim thousands of cats were hunted down and killed across Europe over the next several decades. People believed that destroying these animals was their religious duty to fight evil.
Historians now believe this massive removal of cats created a huge unintended problem. With fewer cats around to hunt them the rat population exploded across the continent. These rats carried the fleas that later spread the Black Death causing millions of human deaths.
