The genus Homo is roughly two point eight million years old; and in that time, our ancestors met some of the most unusual animals ever to live. Many of the animals encountered by the first humans were examples of the mighty, long lost megafauna - a series of giant mammals, birds and reptiles that became extinct towards the end of the last ice age.
Many megafaunal animals, such as woolly mammoths, saber toothed cats and giant sloths have become popularised in recent years, and are now very well known examples of extinct megafauna. What about those animals that don't often get the same treatment, however?
