In the late 16th century, Italian scientist Galileo Galilei challenged the ancient Greek view that heavy objects fall faster than light ones. Legend says he dropped two spheres of different masses from the Leaning Tower of Pisa to prove they hit the ground together. Air resistance, however, always complicated the results for lighter objects in everyday life.

Centuries later, physicists built massive vacuum chambers to test this fundamental rule of physics in pure conditions. At NASA Space Power Facility in Ohio, scientists placed a heavy bowling ball and light feathers inside the world largest vacuum chamber. Once the air was completely pumped out, both items were released simultaneously from high above.

Without air to create drag, gravity acted equally on both objects regardless of their mass or surface shape. The bowling ball and the feathers fell at the exact same rate and struck the ground at the very same microsecond. This dramatic demonstration proved that gravity accelerates all objects equally in the absence of air resistance.
