The Great Hall of Pawgwarts was dressed for Halloween. Floating candles burned inside tiny carved pumpkins, casting warm orange light over the long tables. Black-and-gold banners hung beside grinning jack-o’-lanterns, and enchanted bats circled the ceiling without ever touching the rafters. Ghost cats drifted between the students, leaving trails of cold mist, while bowls of candy and cups of pumpkin juice steamed at every place.
Harry, a small black-and-white tuxedo cat with round glasses and a lightning scar above one eye, sat beside Ron, a tall ginger tabby with blue eyes and freckles across his muzzle. Across from them, Hermione sat alone with a book. Her bushy brown mane spilled over her shoulders, and her small front teeth showed whenever she concentrated.
Ron laughed at her for reading during the feast. Hermione closed the book, lifted her chin, and walked out of the hall without a word.
She did not go back to the common room. She went to the girls’ bathroom on the first floor, where a single enchanted pumpkin candle flickered on the windowsill. Paper bats hung from the ceiling, and fake cobwebs clung to the corners. Hermione shut herself in the farthest stall and tried a small repair charm on a cracked tile. It failed. She tried again.
Then the floor shook.
The door burst open. A mountain troll-cat filled the doorway, its fur matted gray-brown, one tusk broken, its yellow eyes glowing in the pumpkin light. In one enormous paw it carried a club made from the leg of a stone statue. Hermione ran into the stall and locked the door. The troll-cat smashed the first sink. Water sprayed across the floor and put out the pumpkin candle, leaving only the moon outside to light the room.
Back in the Great Hall, the doors slammed open. Quirrell stood there, pale and trembling beneath his dark turban.
“Troll in the dungeons!” he shouted, and collapsed.
The floating candles guttered. The ghost cats turned toward him. Dumbledore rose at once and ordered the prefects to lead every house back to its dormitory. The Halloween feast broke into panic. Harry looked at Hermione’s empty seat.
“She doesn’t know,” he said.
Ron followed his gaze. “The prefects will find her.”
“They don’t know where she is.”
Ron’s ears flattened. He looked at the crowded doors, then at Harry. Without another word, they slipped behind a hanging banner and ran into the dark corridor.
The corridor was full of Halloween magic. Paper bats spun above them. Jack-o’-lanterns floated along the walls, their faces shifting from smiles to warnings. Cobwebs stretched between the torch brackets, and a ghost cat passed through a suit of armor, rattling the metal as it went. Harry and Ron followed a trail of deep scratches and gray-brown fur. The air smelled sour and heavy. Then they heard the footsteps: heavy, steady, and far too close.
They reached the corner just as the troll-cat pushed open the bathroom do
