The sunlight of early spring filtered down through the soil, gentle and golden. Deep below, Mole was hard at work. His small paws scrubbed and dusted and swept, his nose twitching in irritation as dust motes danced in the air. His cozy burrow felt suddenly stuffy, closed, and full of chores.

At last, he dropped his brush. “Hang spring cleaning!” he declared — and before he knew it, he was scrambling upward, up through the damp earth toward the light.

He blinked as he broke through the surface. The world above gleamed with life — the smell of grass, the sound of birds, the sun so warm it made his fur shimmer. Mole stood still, his brown tweed jacket slightly askew, his green trousers brushed with soil, eyes wide with awe.

He laughed softly, almost shyly. Everything was so bright, so alive. He had never seen anything like it.

He wandered through meadows where the wind whispered in the tall grass. Then, faintly at first, he heard a gentle sound — the murmur and sparkle of moving water. The river.

Mole followed it until he saw a figure sitting on the bank — a sleek, friendly-looking rat in a blue striped shirt and white trousers, gazing dreamily at the rippling current. A small wooden boat floated beside him, tied loosely to a branch.

“Hello!” called Mole, hesitant but curious.
Rat turned, his bright eyes glinting. “Well, hello there!” he said cheerfully. “Would you like to come for a row?”

Moments later, Mole found himself in the boat. His heart fluttered with excitement as Rat pushed them off from shore. The river carried them gently along, sunlight glancing off the ripples, willows trailing their green fingers in the water.

“It’s so… so wonderful!” Mole breathed.
Rat smiled. “My dear fellow, the river’s the very best of friends. There’s nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

The two drifted downstream, surrounded by the glow of a golden afternoon. Mole leaned back against the wooden side, his jacket catching the last light of day, his green trousers dappled with reflections of the water. He felt peaceful, free — like the river itself had opened a door to a whole new world.

As the sun slipped below the trees, the current whispered softly beneath them. Mole closed his eyes, smiling. It was the start of something he could not yet name — a friendship, an adventure, a life above ground.
