00:06Here at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, we have some high-flying furry friends, our ring-tailed
00:10lemurs. You can visit them right here at LemurWalk and maybe even catch them in action.
00:22Lemurs are persimians, which means they're related to monkeys and apes, but they're a
00:25little different. They rely on their sense of smell more than other primates and their
00:29long snout, wet and hairless black nose, and curved nostrils make them super sniffers.
00:38Lemurs are herbivores, which means they eat plants like fruit, flowers, and leaves, and
00:43even insects now and then. Do you like to eat any of those things?
00:54A lemur's large eyes are specially adapted to see well at night. They can see trouble
00:59before it can see them. Lemurs live in trees. They move on all fours most of the time.
01:06Can you think of why that would help?
01:11That's right, better balance and no hitting your head on branches. And when lemurs want
01:15to move from tree to tree, it's no trouble at all. Oh, leaping lemurs! They can run across
01:20branches and jump through the trees with no problem.
01:27A lemur's hands and feet are good at grasping branches, and there's something special about
01:31them. Big toe and finger pads help them stick when they land.
01:39Ring tailed lemurs use their long striped tails for balance when running in trees, and they
01:44help other lemurs spot them in the brush. Animal fact, they'll also scent mark their
01:48tails and use them to mark their territory. Aren't you glad we got to catch lemurs in action?
01:56Can you stand here and pray?
