35:02you
35:17well I started in the martial arts back in 1961 a local school opened in the
35:25Pittsburgh area near my home we started in the jiu-jitsu karate background I came involved with the
35:33Okinawa Kenpo system during the early 70s and my first opportunity to get
35:37personally with Master Odo was 1983 with a tour that Grand Master Trias took to
35:45Japan and Okinawa and I was lucky to be selected as one of the members
35:56I currently hold an eighth degree black belt in karate and eighth degree black belt in the weapons and my
36:02kiyoshi or senior teachers license in Okinawa Kenpo karate and kibutu
36:21basically Okinawa Kenpo is a system a very traditional system in the Okinawan arts it traces its lineage back to
36:29around the mid-1700s in a direct line of teachers
36:32to student
36:34Nakamura Siguru Nakamura is the man credited as being the founder of Okinawa Kenpo
36:40however when we say the founder we're really saying he was the individual that coined the term Okinawa Kenpo or
36:46named the system
36:47he was Master Odo's instructor my current teacher Sikichi Odo the current head of the Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kabuto system
36:56Master Nakamura started his karate training at the in elementary school in Okinawa at the Ichu Middle School his instructors
37:05at that time were two shurite practitioners
37:09Chomo Hanashiro and Kansu Yabu they were the physical education teachers and the karate teachers at the at the middle
37:17school
37:18their teacher
37:19their teacher they came out of Itosu
37:23again a shurite practitioner
37:25when
37:26Master Nakamura graduated from school he continued his studies with the gentleman by the name of Kuniyoshi and his teacher
37:35Sakiyama
37:35they were both well known Nahate practitioners
37:39so
37:40that's sort of a little bit of the blend that has made Okinawa Kenpo somewhat unique
37:44in that we
37:45our katas primarily come from the shurite system
37:49yet we have a strong Nahate fighting influence
37:54Nakamura sensei was well known for his power and his punch
37:58and the Okinawa Kenpo practitioners were the first group in Okinawa really to develop the use of the bogo gear
38:07the full contact gear
38:09they modified kendo equipment the headgear and the body armor and use kendo gloves in their sparring
38:16so we carry that lineage on today in the use of full equipment in our Kumite as well
38:31Masterado just as of July 27th of this year this is 1993
38:39celebrated his 67th birthday
38:42he's been involved in the martial arts since he was 13
38:47he's a very
38:48large individual but small in size
38:53he's about slightly under 5 feet
38:57he weighs about 98 pounds
38:59he has more energy than 10 individuals that I've known
39:05his whole existence in life
39:07is perpetuating and teaching and keeping the old ways alive
39:11we're very lucky to have had the opportunity to train with him for many many years
39:19his philosophy is keeping the old ways alive and not changing
39:24his dojo name is called Shudokan
39:27and it means it translates to mean one way keep straight don't change
39:31and that's one of the key philosophies that that all the Okinawa Kenpo practitioners I think have really carried through
39:38and that is we try to maintain the kata in its state as we were taught
39:44we have a lot of opportunity for self-expression in Okinawa Kenpo but the kata never changes
39:50we get into heavy bunkai application
39:53Masterado feels that there should be a base level of bunkai or interpretation
39:57so that all the students have the same idea of what we're doing in the forms
40:04but he's very concerned that we also really understand the kata
40:09and so for each move we get into multiple levels of bunkai
40:14I think Master Odo's biggest contribution to the Okinawan martial arts
40:22is that he was really one of the first of the Okinawan masters
40:26to formally incorporate a full system of Okinawan weapons into a traditional karate system
40:35during the late 60s and early 70s when he was teaching at Master Nakamura's dojo
40:42he was asked to introduce the weapons into the dojo which he did
40:47prior to Nakamura sensei's death in 1969, 1970
40:52Master Nakamura asked him to continue teaching the weapons as part of the program
40:58in the mid 70s Master Odo formally incorporated the weapons into the karate program
41:05thereby giving birth to what we now call Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kabuto
41:11at that time many there was much consternation because most of the weapons at that point in time
41:19had been kept separate you had separate weapons organizations separate karate organizations
41:23although most of the Okinawan karate teachers dabbled and worked in the weapons as well
41:31today almost 15, 18, 20 years later we see most almost every Okinawan karate organization
41:39now has also formally gotten involved with the weapons side as well
41:43one of the key things is part of his concern of preserving the old ways
41:50in that he has handed down to us a series of 27 weapons forms involving 12 different weapons
41:57so it really provides us with a good flavor for the traditions of the Okinawan Kobudo
42:07an additional aspect that we get involved with is the continuing the concept of the contact sparring
42:15that we do in the open hand with the weapons as well
42:19so we also use the protective gear and in addition to the two-man forms of bo-bo, bo-sai,
42:26bo-tunfa, bo-tembe
42:27we also do freestyle sparring with the weapons
42:33so it's a little unique concept and one that is very enjoyable
42:41his focus is a lot of jitsu when you ask Master Oda what do you do
42:48his karate doesn't define the lines it doesn't define the lines between karate-do and jiu-jitsu and this and
42:56that
42:56it's all more like the old way and a lot of grappling, a lot of throwing techniques, a lot of
43:02joint locking
43:03with unarmed and armed as well
43:06so it's been a wealth of knowledge and I found him to be one of the most knowledgeable individuals
43:12that I've come across and I really enjoyed the opportunity to have trained with him and continue to train with
43:18him
43:25as with the other traditional systems Okinawa Kenpo uses a 10-q and a 10-dan system
43:35in Okinawa Sensei still until recently used just a 6-q system
43:43he has recently gone to a 10-q system basically the white, green and brown
43:49we typically do not get into the multicolors
43:54at the black belt level there's a 10-dan system
43:57again the standard system where first through third don is your student level
44:03at fourth don, yon don, you become eligible to go for your teacher's license
44:10your first teacher's license is your renchi
44:13that is indicated in the Okinawa Kenpo system
44:16the person who has attained that rank as having a one gold stripe along diagonally on the back of the
44:23obi
44:24in addition one of the key unique things is that a practitioner of Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kabuto
44:31when they receive their black belt, their shodan
44:34they receive it not only in karate but they also receive it in the kabuto
44:38and we signify that by a little weapons patch on again the backside of the obi
44:45all promotions of fourth don or higher and all of the teacher's license are issued only by Master Odo
44:52so even though I as a high ranking senior student under him
44:57traditionally would have the right to promote within one or two ranks of my level
45:06all the Okinawa Kenpo people basically have turned that responsibility over to Master Odo
45:12we recommend but he grants the final authority
45:15I really feel that's in line with the old ways and traditional way to do it
45:19he's the master of the system and if someone's representing themselves as a teacher of that system
45:24they should have his good housekeeping seal of approval
45:27and that's the way we do that
45:29we bring sensei over every year to the United States
45:32and we also try to go to Okinawa as well
45:35at the seventh degree level and above
45:40the individual becomes eligible for the senior teacher's license or Master level license
45:46and that's the Kyoshi
45:47that would be signified on the black belt by two diagonal gold stripes
45:51or by the wearing of the red and white belt that I have on
45:58at the ninth or tenth degree level
46:01the individual would be eligible for the grand master or the Hanshi license
46:09and we only have one of those at a time in the system
46:13and that is Master Odo
46:16so at this point in time there are no ninth dons in the system
46:20Master Odo has his tenth degree and his Hanshi
46:24there are no ninth dons
46:26the next highest rank is eighth don
46:28I currently hold as I said hold eighth don in both the karate and the kabuto
46:40yes we have a structure that the parent organization
46:45is called the Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kabuto Federation
46:50that is the organization that whose patch is the uppermost on my shoulder
46:55the patch itself the crossed fists in front of the red sun signify the
47:05our connection to China
47:07if you notice the fists they are not one person's arms
47:11they are two people's arms
47:13you couldn't place your arms in that position
47:15so it signifies the connection of the Okinawan and the Chinese cultures
47:19from which the Okinawa Kenpo was born
47:22and the Japanese flag in the background
47:26the Okinawa Kenpo Karate Kabuto Federation is the parent organization
47:30under that we have a structure where we have affiliated organizations
47:36and ours organization is the International Karate Kabuto Federation
47:41that's the patch underneath and that is an affiliate member of the OkKKF
47:45but all the guidelines the curriculum criteria
47:51and all the ranking authorization from yondon and above are in the authority of Master Odo
47:58as an affiliate organization in my organization Master Odo is a member of the executive board
48:05and he has a unique position of veto power
48:09and over any changes or any curriculum materials
48:14and also in the authorizations of the yondon and above ranks
48:18so it's a way that we provide for again that oversight
48:24and the quality control by the master of the system
48:28and I think that's very important to keep the old ways alive
48:31we always must keep ourselves being a student
48:34that's one of the things that Master Odo has drilled into
48:38I think every one of us
48:40in that today even at age of 67
48:43he still studies with two people in Okinawa
48:48Michio Kakaizu for weapons and Sekitoma for karate and weapons
48:53so that's a key consideration
48:56if the master of the system
48:57someone who's been involved in it 54 years or more
49:00continues to try to further his knowledge
49:02I think that sets a very very positive example for us as students
49:06that there's always something more to learn
49:09and we try to pass that down as a senior students to our students as well
49:15the day you stop trying to be a student is the day you should put your obi away
49:19and put your gi away because you really have lost what I think traditional martial arts is about
49:24what we have a structure
49:35well we have a structure where we are a style specific organization
49:41both the OKKKF and the IKKF are strictly style specific
49:46but we do have a number of different system practitioners who come in to us for the weapons
49:54so the only karate we teach is Okinawa Kenpo
49:57that's the only thing I feel I've always been a strong advocate of teaching what you know
50:04and not teaching what you don't know
50:07I'm not a multi-style focused person
50:10so our focus is to Okinawa Kenpo
50:13I feel that's the only thing we can grade in
50:15but we do have a structure
50:17we have a division for just a karate in the Okinawa Kenpo
50:20we have a karate kabuto division
50:22of which most of our practitioners fall within
50:25and we have a weapons only division
50:27in that structure a traditional shotokan, ishenru, goju-ru, tangsu-do
50:37so we have representatives from those different backgrounds
50:41wadaru, shitaru, who have come in
50:43they continue doing their karate
50:45but they adopt and follow our weaponry
50:50and receive their certification for Okinawa Kenpo kobudo
50:55but we do not certify them in karate
50:57they are still proceeding their line through their traditional program
51:02sometimes they desire to make the whole transition
51:05and we have a number of schools who have done that as well
51:09our purpose is really to get the old ways out
51:12and try to keep them alive
51:13so we feel the best thing we can do is to give an opportunity
51:18to have people see what our weaponry is like
51:22what our karate is like
51:23particularly the weaponry so that that does not die out
51:26so fifty or a hundred years from now
51:27that the old traditional ways are still going to be alive
51:40well I think one of the key things is just that
51:43to use this as an opportunity to really further one of Mastoroto's goals
51:49and that's keeping the old ways alive
51:51there are a lot of tremendous martial artists in the United States and around the world
51:56I've been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to train with Mastoroto
52:00I hope through providing these videos
52:04which give just a smathering of insight into the Okinawa Kenpo system
52:09that this will generate for a number of people
52:12the interest maybe to pursue this route a little further
52:16and that we may be able to provide an opportunity for training
52:22for further training for some other traditional karate or weapons practitioners
52:27so that the more people and the more schools
52:31except for that we can get the weaponry out to
52:34the better chance that future generations when we're all dead and buried
52:38that the old ways will still be alive
52:40I think in that way we've all contributed to peace
52:44and as long as I'm teaching
52:46my teachers, my past teachers of Mastoroto, Mastor Trias
52:52and my first teacher Henry Talbot in the Pittsburgh area
52:55they'll always be alive
52:57and through our students we'll continue to live
53:00and I think that that's important
53:42that's important
53:42that our parents and entrepreneurs
53:42are very happy to join in
53:42so don't take a chance
53:42and that's really to be able
