00:00Ladies and gentlemen, the Governor of California, Honorable Ronald Reagan.
00:14Thank you, Dean. I was a little surprised when I was asked to be here tonight to honor Bob Hope.
00:20Well, surprised isn't exactly the right word. Annoyed.
00:25I've got a lot of important decisions to make in the next several weeks.
00:29Like, do I go with beacons or stick with U-Haul?
00:42Now, in accepting this invitation, I don't want the taxpayers to think that I'd make a special trip down here
00:48just to be on this program.
00:49Now, that would be frivolous.
00:51I just happen to be in town anyway for something really important.
00:55A guest shot on Hollywood Squares.
00:59Seriously, Bob would do well in politics.
01:02He certainly has to be one of the most familiar faces in America.
01:05He's entertained over 10 million troops and seen by more than 100 million TV viewers.
01:10And if you throw in the 27 people who've seen these movies, you have a pretty sizable constituency.
01:18Because I'm the last one to criticize somebody's movie career.
01:23I've had a few disasters myself.
01:25I don't criticize governors either.
01:36Bob Hope is a man of remarkable accomplishments.
01:39He's been America's most favored comedian at a time when America was in her most bewildered state of mind.
01:45He's entertained six presidents.
01:47He's performed for 12.
01:57Seriously, Bob, I know that over the years you've received many tributes and awards.
02:02And it gives me great pleasure to tell you that in honor of this occasion,
02:06the state legislature has unanimously passed a bill naming you California's foremost citizen.
02:24Our next guest is America's favorite Western hero, John Wayne.
02:28When Duke first rode into California,
02:31all he carried was a gun and a snake bite kit
02:34in case he was bitten by Don Rickles.
02:40And now, Duke's up in Oregon filming his new movie.
02:44See if you can spot the clever way he sneaked in a plug for his picture.
02:49Ladies and gentlemen, here's my old buddy, John Wayne.
02:53Hi, Bob.
02:54This is John Rooster Cogburn on location in Bend, Oregon,
02:58filming the sequel to True Grit,
03:00co-starring Catherine Hepburn by Hal Wallace Production, Wayne.
03:04Did I do that okay, Dean?
03:07Perfect, pal.
03:08I'm really sorry I couldn't be there with you tonight, Bobby.
03:12You know that one of the great disappointments of my career
03:15is that I have never been able to make a picture with you.
03:17It's about as disappointing as not doing one with Jane Fonda.
03:26I gotta go now, Bob.
03:28My big scene is coming up.
03:31We have got a little problem.
03:33Hepburn thinks it's her big scene.
03:37See you, friend.
03:38Have a good roast.
03:43Bob Hope has one of the most hectic schedules in the world.
03:48A typical week may find him in a dozen cities,
03:52ten different countries.
03:53The responsibility of flying him to all of his commitments,
03:57such as the roast tonight,
03:59rests on the shoulders of one person.
04:02Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the man
04:04who has been Bob Hope's personal pilot for the last 32 years,
04:09Captain Foster Brooks.
04:18I see that you catch her shooter to safely, eh?
04:22Safety.
04:25As I did.
04:27I hate laying those great gray things down in the dark.
04:39As the steward for Alitalia just told you,
04:45I am Boop Hop Hop Boop Boop.
04:53I am Boop Boop Boop.
04:55I am our host's personal pilot.
04:57So far this year, we've logged three million miles together.
05:03Most of them trying to find this place.
05:10Not everyone, not everyone is qualified to perform
05:17a task as demanding as the one I have chosen
05:20to make my wife work.
05:23My life's work.
05:25It requires a man with razor-sharp reflexes,
05:29a man with complete control of his senses,
05:32a man who is able to execute split-second decisions,
05:36knowing that the slightest error in judgment
05:39could mean the demise of one of the most revered
05:43and best loved citizens on earth.
05:46I think I'm going to throw up.
