00:00God, we used to do, Tommy, you're a young buck,
00:02but we used to do two weeks with three-a-days
00:06because of Jason Garrett's schedule.
00:09And an earlier show.
00:11Earlier show, 3.30.
00:122.45, wake up, do the show,
00:15have to come back for Jason's freaking walkthrough,
00:18go back home, and then he had the later practice early evening.
00:23Oh, for two weeks.
00:25Misery for me.
00:26It was tough.
00:27It was very tough.
00:28And Colter, this is the warmest I can ever remember.
00:32I don't think I've ever worn shorts in the morning,
00:34and I've worn shorts the last couple days here.
00:38It's a back-in-my-day Thursday for you guys here.
00:42Telling tales from the Obama administration.
00:44Yeah.
00:46While you were blogging or talking to your little tape recorder.
00:50Tommy Yaris, DallasCowboys.com.
00:53Tape recorder, another old-ass reference over here.
00:55Get a tat machine.
00:57Get the old tat machines.
00:58What an ancient mechanism that is.
01:00You're the newest and the oldest technology sold here, Bobby.
01:04You'd be the one to figure out how to do it.
01:05Well, Tim.
01:09Splicing carts.
01:10Yeah, we're going to get our reel-to-reel up.
01:12Reel-to-reel.
01:13Tommy Yaris is joining us, brought to you by the Windstar World Casino and Resort.
01:16Proud to be the casino of the Dallas Cowboys.
01:18Please game responsibly.
01:20Off yesterday, back to practice today.
01:22But you were breaking down Christian Parker's press conference.
01:26Was he asked about the new 20-minute media policy of filming practice?
01:31He was not asked about that.
01:33So, yeah, no.
01:35Nothing there.
01:36Did you think he was going to be asked?
01:38I don't think so.
01:40No.
01:41I don't know if he would have been the center of that.
01:46But nothing shocks me anymore.
01:48So, if it did happen, I wouldn't.
01:49Who would have asked it?
01:51Oh, I'm not going to do that.
01:52It's Clarence.
01:53Come on.
01:54It would have been Clarence.
01:54I may or may not agree.
01:56Whose side are you on?
02:00I mean, in my job, I think I'm on the media side.
02:03But I understand both sides of it.
02:06And I have a lot of respect for what Cowboys PR does.
02:09They have a very difficult job.
02:10So, I get it.
02:11And I'm glad that it came out to a reasonable solution for everybody.
02:15What jumped out from CP?
02:16I think that, you know, he was asked towards the end of his presser about, hey, how do you feel
02:23like you built the staff?
02:24And what are your thoughts on your staff?
02:27And he went on for almost four minutes.
02:29And I know it doesn't sound like a very long time in the grand scheme of things, but he's a
02:33pretty quick talker sometimes.
02:34Yeah.
02:34And he went through every single member of his staff from position coaches to assistant position coaches and said a
02:42little bit about each one of them.
02:43Like, what do they bring?
02:44What's their background?
02:46How did I find out about this guy?
02:48And I don't know if I've ever heard that from a coach before, unless he specifically asked about every single
02:53person.
02:53He went unprompted about every single person.
02:56So, I think he's really proud of the staff he's built.
02:59He called them a bunch of first-round picks in terms of, you know, the caliber of coach that they
03:03are and what they're able to do to help him out.
03:07So, I put a transcription of all those on Twitter, and you can see what he said about each person.
03:12But that was one thing.
03:14And then he just wanted to, like, give them their shine.
03:15I guess so, yeah.
03:16You can give them their flowers.
03:17And, you know, again, completely unprompted about every single member of the staff.
03:21So, you know, that's – I would think that that's something, if you're an assistant coach, like, hey, this guy
03:26gets me.
03:27And, you know, I'm here for a reason.
03:29I don't feel like, you know, I'm just dragging along.
03:31And so, I have a role here.
03:33So, I think that's one thing that stood out.
03:35And then when he was asked about – we've talked so much about communication with you and how important it
03:41is.
03:42What does that look like in this setting?
03:45And how are you trying to make sure that your players are bought into it?
03:48And are they bought into it?
03:49And he said, I think if you step in our meeting room and you hear how loud it is, you
03:53might think something wrong is going on.
03:55So, he's trying to treat their meeting room like the field.
03:59And he's having guys yell things out as they're watching film sitting there.
04:03And that obviously can get a bit chaotic.
04:04Like, so, I think it's, you know, in this point of the year when it's talking season and he's saying
04:11all the right things and he's off to a pretty good start in that department.
04:14What did he have to say about the defensive practices and how they're progressing and coming along or anyone standing
04:21out?
04:22I think he's saying it's going along well.
04:24He's pleased with how it's gone.
04:26I think he had good things to say about Jayshon Barham, one of the guys that stood out and said,
04:30hey, we drafted him for a reason.
04:32We saw a vision for him and he's executing it right now.
04:35So, that's obviously a good sign.
04:38Savone Revel is another guy that he talked about, you know, saying, hey, the next step for him is seemingly
04:43more the mental side of the game.
04:45You play one rep at a time, but he's strung together some good practices.
04:49I think he likes what DeMarvion Overshawn has done with the green dot, even though all the linebackers are wearing
04:55them right now.
04:55They're trying different things out, so it's not.
04:57So, we're not green dot settled yet.
04:58It's not set in stone yet, no.
05:00So, but he still likes what DeMarvion Overshawn is doing, and, you know, now it's just continuing to put those
05:06pieces together.
05:08But so far, it seems like he's happy with how they've started.
05:10And he keeps referring to it as, hey, we got our undergraduate or our bachelor's, whatever, in OTAs, minicamp.
05:17Now we're working towards getting our master's degree.
05:19But, I mean, I don't know if anybody has experience with doing a one-year master's program, but that's basically
05:25if you crunched a master's program into a semester.
05:28So, I can imagine that's pretty difficult.
05:30Yeah, I went for half my MBA.
05:33Took a year.
05:34There you go.
05:34Got half of it.
05:35Then I dropped out.
05:37Where'd you go to school, Tommy?
05:39Texas.
05:40Welcome.
05:41Tommy Arsh from DallasGowals.com joining us here.
05:43Why are you holding it up?
05:44You didn't go there.
05:45I'm acknowledging it.
05:47You're like, yeah, fellow lawmore.
05:49You didn't even go to high school.
05:51It's the state.
05:52We'll take anybody.
05:52No, that's why statistically I'm smarter than all of you.
05:55But if you look at the...
05:56Socially behind.
05:57No, Texas.
05:58Socially behind.
05:59University of Texas.
06:00I was out there socializing later than anybody else last night.
06:03So, that's where I was at.
06:05So, Tommy, the last couple of days have been really strong for the secondary.
06:09Secondaries look like they've had a couple of good practices, especially the corners.
06:13Where would you say that at this point of training camp and these practices, you say,
06:17that part of the defense still looks like it's behind when they're out here practicing?
06:21Good question.
06:24I would say it's...
06:25Learn that in homeschool.
06:26It's the front seven.
06:28Tommy, worst timing by you.
06:30I would say it's the front seven.
06:33And it's not a thing of, you know, they haven't made those splash plays.
06:37But I don't know if it's popped as much.
06:40You see some flashes.
06:41Like, last practice, Sam Williams had a good play on Jaden Blue that he blew up.
06:45And we've seen Donovan Azaraku have a really good day.
06:48We've seen Rashawn Gary have a really good day.
06:50But I don't know if that unit as a collective has had a day where it's like,
06:54man, you're really noticing this defensive line.
06:57Or you're really noticing these linebackers fly around.
06:59Jayshan Barham has been, you know, one of the examples where he's popped a couple different times.
07:03But I don't know if I'm necessarily surprised by that.
07:07Because I expect this to be a defense that is...
07:11I mean, they're so good up front that that will probably dictate a lot of it.
07:15But with a secondary-minded head coach, the secondary is going to be so important.
07:19So it's no surprise to me that that's kind of where you're seeing a lot of the action at the
07:24moment.
07:24Just because Christian Parker is a secondary guy.
07:28And I think in this defense, they're going to play a huge role.
07:32But you want to see, you know, the defensive line help them out a little bit.
07:36Because that makes everybody's life easier.
07:38They back on the practice field today without pads?
07:41I'm not sure.
07:43I should have come more prepared for that question.
07:44Well, hey, we asked him to come a little bit earlier.
07:47But Ryan Flannoy is getting set to sit down with us.
07:51Fantastic story.
07:52Of course.
07:53Sounds like a fantastic person as well.
07:55And this feels like a locked-in number three.
07:58We were trying to think the other day when's the last time you felt like this thing wasn't going to
08:02rotate.
08:03Or have someone else compete for that, that this thing is settled in.
08:07How would you describe Ryan Flannoy as a player, his skill set in game?
08:11Yeah, I think he is in the perfect situation for a wide receiver three.
08:15Because you've got two wide receivers in front of you that are wide receiver one caliber on any team in
08:21the NFL.
08:23And so much attention is going to go to them that you really just have to do your job and
08:29you will get opportunities.
08:30I think you saw that last year.
08:31And it's no surprise why he has a 100-yard game twice.
08:35So I think his skill set is good.
08:37I mean, he can really do it all.
08:38I feel like he's a well-rounded wide receiver.
08:40He's a good route runner.
08:41He's got strong hands.
08:42He can make plays after the catch.
08:44So if you have all those things and you've got C.D. Lamb and George Pickens lining up with you,
08:48you're going to get your chances.
08:50He cashed in last year, and I think he's going to continue to do it this year.
08:54You know, is he going to get 1,000 yards like he says he will?
08:56I don't think so.
08:57I don't know about that.
08:58Because if you have 3,000-yard receivers, do you have a run game?
09:02Or are you literally the greatest offense there is?
09:06Goaty.
09:07But I think he's a heck of a player.
09:10And like you said, great story.
09:11We were talking to him earlier in the week.
09:12And he said that, you know, he knew about the Miles Austin story and kind of where that number came
09:20from.
09:20And he wants to make a 19 club now.
09:24I've got the 88 club, but he wants to make a 19 club now.
09:27Thank you, Tommy.
09:28We appreciate it.
09:29We'll see you in a few hours of practice.
09:30All right.
09:30Thanks, guys.
09:31Be great, Tommy.
09:31Y'all.
