Is Simon Edvinsson next on the list?
Transcript
00:00I'm not really sure what Raymond was doing with the puck,
00:02but it leads to Hughes going the other way.
00:05Hughes was all around the net, buried the game winner.
00:08Red Wings lose an OT.
00:10Red Wings lost the game.
00:11They've lost a lot of games.
00:12They got an organizational win by signing Alex to Brinkett.
00:16Seven years, $13 million a season.
00:19Taking care of someone who wants to be here.
00:21And John, they didn't cheap out.
00:23They paid market price.
00:24They lived in 2026, the real world.
00:27It's a win because this is a good player.
00:30He performed in March.
00:31He was one of the few guys last season.
00:33He had 20 points in 14 games.
00:35He scored 40 goals.
00:37And to give you a sense of how rare that is,
00:39only four Red Wings have done it since the year 2000.
00:44Shanahan, Zetterberg, Hosa, and to Brinkett.
00:48So this is a guy who you could say,
00:51well, why does he want to be here?
00:53He worked his way here.
00:55He got himself traded here.
00:57He's got a young family here.
00:59He may want to be the captain of this team.
01:01It may hold a special place in his heart to turn this thing around.
01:05He wants to be here.
01:06And the Wings finally did something right.
01:11It's not the order that we thought things would happen in.
01:15But they did something right.
01:17And I think everybody should be happy that Alex to Brinkett is not just here for this year.
01:22You're not going to have to have conversations about him being a trade deadline,
01:25you know, exodus.
01:27And they are, at least now, if you start looking at when they say things about what we, this is
01:35not going to be a rebuild.
01:36This is one of those facts that you can put into, okay, not a rebuild, because they're not going to
01:42send him off at the trade deadline.
01:43He is here for the next, this year, and seven more.
01:47You know, you've got Moe Sider.
01:48You've got some of these guys that are locked up.
01:50But now the question is, may not the order that we wanted things to happen in, but what happens with
01:56Simon Edmondson?
01:57Yeah, pay him market price, too.
01:59And I know there were reports he's flying back to the East Coast.
02:02Get the deal done.
02:03And maybe this is, okay, they're willing to pay market rate for the Brinkett.
02:07Are they going to now do the right thing and pay market rate for Simon Edmondson?
02:11I would sure hope so.
02:12The cap is soaring.
02:14I mean, to give people an idea, the cap was frozen around COVID.
02:18It was like $81, $82 million, and it stayed flat for years.
02:23Over the last three, it's jumped.
02:24So from 82, it went to 88, 90-something, and now it's 104.
02:29It has spiked.
02:30So it's not a surprise.
02:31Like, you're going to have to pay more.
02:33DeBrinckett's going to be the highest-paid Red Wing by almost $5 million.
02:37Good.
02:38Get with the times.
02:39And by the way, the fact that you did lock up Raymond Insider,
02:43Larkin, too, although I know he wants out,
02:45you have some favorable contracts to justify throwing around some money right now.
02:51I also think this DeBrinckett deal starts to solidify a bit of a timeline.
02:55Because it's been murky.
02:56Like, what is the contention window?
02:58Yeah.
02:59Well, you've got this guy signed as a 40-goal scorer into his mid-30s.
03:02So, and it shifts the window a little younger than Larkin, assuming that trade happens.
03:08Larkin's in his 30s.
03:09DeBrinckett's still in his late 20s.
03:10You shift the window down a few years, but you don't, you still have a group of guys
03:15that you can build around here.
03:16Yes.
03:17And that's all a positive.
03:19Now, it's, are they finally starting to get out of their own way?
03:24And can they work through this?
03:26And we saw the Pistons, obviously, with Tom Gores.
03:29We heard some of the similar chants at the LCA for the Pistons and ownership
03:35as we have heard for Wings and ownership.
03:38In three short years.
03:40Now, it felt long while you were in it, but they went from the 28-game losing streak
03:45to winning 60 games and the number one seed.
03:48But they did it because they started doing things the right way.
03:52You can't, you can't keep doing things the way the Wings were doing it.
03:56And is this the opportunity that they're taking of starting to do things the right way?
04:00There's a long road and it may be a lot longer than the Pistons.
04:03I'm very happy you said that.
04:05Starting is the key word.
04:06You've got to start somewhere.
04:07I know, but I don't want people to, they're in the car, they're driving into work.
04:10Wow, you guys are way back on the bandwagon.
04:12No, no, no, no.
04:13No, no, no.
04:14Long, long way to go.
04:16Long way to go.
04:17Long way to go.
04:18But you've got to start somewhere.
04:21You've got to start doing things right at some point.
04:23And is this the first move?
04:26Sign Alex Dobrynkic to a modern-day contract.
04:29And then is the next one, hey, you get Simon Edmondson back and signed to a modern-day contract.
04:35And maybe they have a captain here in Dobrynkic.
04:38And you start to put leadership pillars in place.
04:41I mean, I think it's him or Sider.
04:43Yeah.
04:44Yeah.
04:44I think that individual is on the current roster.
04:47So Dobrynkic has this year plus the seven-year extension.
04:50He's got eight years.
04:51And it's a full no-trade for four years of this new deal.
04:56Yeah, then it becomes modified at five.
04:57Modifieds again at six.
04:58And at seven, again, there's modifications.
05:01But there should be some roots planted here.
05:02And this isn't a surprise.
05:03Like, when Dobrynkic signed, we had him on the show.
05:06I don't think you were in that day.
05:07I was, I think, filling in with Stoney.
05:09And we had Dobrynkic on.
05:10And he talked about, you know, his family are diehard Red Wing fans.
05:14They've got, like, their basement is decked out in this cool Red Wing memorabilia.
05:19You know, I just, and he's got little kids.
05:22I don't think he wanted to move.
05:23He would have moved if the Wings low-balled him, I know.
05:26But the Wings didn't.
05:28No, they didn't.
05:29And it's, like, everybody wants to know, okay, why would he sign here?
05:33He's got to be seeing some of the same things, if not everything, that Dylan Larkin was seeing.
05:38Well, there's a lot of different reasons why you make this.
05:41The number one is the money.
05:42And the Wings ponied up.
05:44Yep.
05:45A couple quick texts.
05:46This says, another Wings misstep.
05:51Here we go.
05:51What do you think the criticism is?
05:53I paid him too much.
05:54He's not that good.
05:55Whatever.
05:56Instead of getting a good haul via trade, we're locking ourselves into a massive contract for a tiny player who
06:01can't do anything besides take open shots.
06:04Tell me you don't watch hockey without telling me you don't watch hockey.
06:09Dobrynkic back checks.
06:10I know he's small.
06:12He does play hard.
06:14He does play defense.
06:16He's not just a one-way guy.
06:19I don't know what hockey you've watched.
06:20The last two marches, he's been a point-per-game player.
06:23At their lowest moments, he has been a driver of offense for this hockey team.
06:28Share his numbers.
06:29I think you have them there about what he did last March.
06:31When everyone else was jerseys.
06:34Yeah.
06:34So, everybody's a jersey.
06:35Everybody stinks.
06:35No one's showing up to the rink to play hard.
06:37They played 14 games.
06:38He scored 20 points.
06:41That's a guy I want to reward.
06:43Yeah.
06:44That's a guy rising to the occasion.
06:45And keep around.
06:46Yes.
06:46We don't have enough of those guys.
06:49I felt like it was Sider and Dobrynkic and a whole bunch of underwhelming.
06:54Well, who are the guys with the longest-term contract?
06:58Sider and Dobrynkic and Raymond, too.
07:00But you are rewarding the good players.
07:04I know that some of the pushback is going to be, should you even be extending him if you need
07:09to go through a full rebuild?
07:10Rebuild, right.
07:11Because now you can't trade him.
07:12He has a no-trade clause.
07:13You can't flip him into a total rebuild.
07:17That's maybe the only downside.
07:20Right.
07:20Oh, you can't tank.
07:21You can't tank and plunge into the lowest points.
07:24Right, because he's going to score goals.
07:26Yes.
07:30But if you're going to employ Sider and Raymond, don't you also?
07:33You know what I mean?
07:34You need good players around those guys.
07:35Yes, you do.
07:36And eventually, you have to start doing things right.
07:39And it may be late.
07:42It may be out of order.
07:43It may be awkward.
07:47But it's something that we all wanted them to do.
07:52And they're finally doing it.
07:54The text says, 40-goal scorer, great tenacity.
07:56Good word.
07:57That's why you keep him.
07:58It says, his line was really good last night.
08:01It was.
08:01Yeah, they scored all the points.
08:03Finney and NBN and a couple young guys playing with him.
08:06Yeah.
08:06Yeah.
08:07You think Simon at 10 million AAV should be enough?
08:10Get it done.
08:11I wish Larkin would stay.
08:12But we can pivot off of that when the time comes.
08:16Another text says, go pay Simon.
08:17There's a lot of Edvinson texts this morning.
08:19Oh, sure.
08:20Why wasn't this done first?
08:22Well, at least it's been reported that he's stateside.
08:25Yeah.
08:26And I don't.
08:26I mean, who knows why?
08:28I would think it's because something is going to happen relatively soon.
08:33Or he would just be still skating in Sweden.
08:35Yeah.
08:36So there's your Debrinket update.
08:38We got open lines if Red Wing fans want to jump in and talk a little hockey.
08:41You have a question about who's next.
08:43Yeah.
08:44Which contract is next?
08:45And okay.
08:46Set Edvinson aside.
08:47Edvinson aside.
08:47Yeah.
08:48Who is the next Detroit athlete to get a big deal?
08:52Because we've seen Pistons.
08:55We've seen Wings.
08:57We had the extension with McGonigal early on in the season.
09:01Like we're starting to see some of the young guys get signed.
09:03There's a couple lions we'll circle.
09:05We'll talk contract.
09:06Who's next?
09:07Next.
09:0897-1.
