00:00Compare that to how we felt last series.
00:02Yesterday, you know, you and I, we were over in Little Italy.
00:07A wonderful time was had by all.
00:09And a lot of people asking about the Guardians.
00:11I said, well, you know, Drew Rasmussen is a tough one.
00:14That's what we kept saying.
00:15I said, if they can find a way to get to Drew Rasmussen, who's a hell of a pitcher,
00:20and they find a way to win this game, be feeling a lot better tomorrow morning.
00:24They found a way to win that game.
00:25I'm feeling a lot better this morning.
00:28I have not felt better about a series after one game.
00:31I went in yesterday, Kenny, with no expectations about the opener.
00:34I thought they had the obvious massive pitching advantage.
00:37It was incredible.
00:39You know, you're wondering, are you running into a buzzsaw with game one,
00:43with the Rays, been a superior team all year.
00:45The last time we saw Rasmussen, I mean, what did we see him a couple times?
00:49We had no shot against him.
00:50He totally dominated us.
00:52So yesterday, my thought was, hey, let's try to steal one.
00:55And I don't even know if I'd call it a steal at this point.
00:59I think everybody felt the same way.
01:00I don't even know if I'd call it a steal.
01:01We were victimized, I thought, a bunch.
01:05We were getting hard hits.
01:06We were putting the barrel of the bat on the ball consistently.
01:11And then we finally broke through.
01:13It was just awesome.
01:14It was just absolutely awesome.
01:15And I'd have to sweat it out late.
01:16They didn't steal one.
01:17They took one.
01:18It's much different.
01:19They bullied that game.
01:20And they looked in very good spirits the whole time.
01:24It looked totally different than the way the White Sox series.
01:28So this goes with the conversation that was had last week and everything like that
01:31about, like, well, you're playing the Rays.
01:33And it's like, well, there's nothing to be afraid of.
01:35You get to the final four teams of baseball.
01:37It's like that's still a tremendous season.
01:39I don't know what we're afraid of when it comes to Tampa Bay.
01:43Owen, I mean, your outlook on it is very positive.
01:46Now, while I was watching the game, like John said, John said he felt great about the game
01:52the whole time the game was going on for the reasons Lima just said about hard hit balls
01:56and things like that.
01:57I was nervous because I'm going, well, we're going to hit lasers right at people.
02:02And then we're going to have a problem.
02:03This will be one of these games that we're upset that they lost, that we had a chance
02:06to win.
02:07I've seen them have nine and ten hits and strand seven or eight runners.
02:10Exactly.
02:11Several times this season.
02:12So, I'm like, I'm hoping after the bottom of the first that Griffin can settle down.
02:16He did.
02:17Everything was fine.
02:18And then I'm hoping that, obviously, they can get through.
02:21They did, which made it great.
02:23And then, obviously, I think Jose Ramirez chuckling on his way to the plate was probably the moment
02:28of the game for everybody involved.
02:29Because I think he knew how big this, like, when you bust a game open like that, he knows
02:34he's one of the smartest players in baseball history, let alone baseball players now.
02:38And he knows how big that win is.
02:40He understands exactly how big that is.
02:43And a guy like that, who knows as much as he knows about the game, the inside of, like,
02:49the real minutiae of the game, I think makes every fan, whether you're a hardcore baseball
02:54guy, you're a baseball coach, or you're one of the people that drop in in the month of
02:58August and you kind of take over while things are going on.
03:01Which, again, everybody's money's green.
03:03It all spends.
03:04It's all needed.
03:05I think everybody can respect that.
03:07Now, I remain respectful of the Rays.
03:09It's not me sitting here saying the series is over or anything like that.
03:13It's the first game.
03:15But I will tell you, I have not felt this good after a game one of a series about the
03:20series.
03:21I don't think in my entire life.
03:23I don't think I felt this good.
03:24Well, you've got to feel great.
03:26I mean, that was the game that you felt a lot of fans that I talked to were like,
03:30ah, we're kind of punting.
03:31You know, we'll see.
03:32But the beauty of baseball is you could throw out the matchups all you want, and the games
03:38normally could change so fast.
03:40You know, the fact that they get two early ones that one gets by Quan.
03:47Basically, the turf, you're like, ah, that would never happen.
03:50If Quan played more games there, that would never happen.
03:53And he would be so much of a better strategist out there on that play because he's, the way
04:00that he's a sponge and he's so smart defensively.
04:03And you're like, all right, you know, they are the Rays.
04:06They know how to do this.
04:07They can just plug away with their lineup.
04:11And then it just didn't feel to me that at any point of that game, we were outmatched.
04:18I just never thought that even though we were down 2-0 going into the, what, sixth inning?
04:22Yeah.
04:23I never felt that way.
04:24I did.
04:25I agreed with John that we were making them work.
04:29At no point did we look like we didn't belong on the field or anything like that.
04:34And they just got more and more confident throughout the game.
04:36They really did.
04:372-1-6-4-7-4-0-92.
04:39Have you ever felt this good about a series after game one of that series?
04:44Because there's always, when it comes to baseball, there's always more things to say after a loss.
04:48There's always more complaints.
04:49There's really that way in sports.
04:50I mean, there's only so many ways you can go around and say how great things are.
04:54But again, I can't say enough about how great things are.
04:59And it's an emotional thing.
05:01I think that it plays on emotions more than anything.
05:04Again, just because I had heard all last week,
05:07well, you know, you win this series, but then as they were making their comeback against the White Sox,
05:12well, you win this series, but then you got the Rays waiting on you and the Rays are this, that,
05:16and the other.
05:17And really, I just felt like, okay, like if they go and they lose to the Rays,
05:22hey, it's still been a tremendous season.
05:24That's why I said what I said to Nick yesterday.
05:25I'm sure you might have an opinion on that where I'm like, hey, I think it's already a successful year.
05:30And I found them to be loose.
05:33They did not press the way they did in the first couple of games against the Chicago White Sox.
05:38I mean, they're playing their very best baseball at the time that they need their very best baseball.
05:41To have that many hits, to score that many runs on a pitcher who is one of the top three
05:47in the American League
05:49is such a huge start to the series for them.
05:53And it cannot be understated that to get the offense going on a day where you don't have one of
05:59your aces,
06:00because it's one thing to get it going while you have your aces.
06:02Like, okay, we can still win these games that we're supposed to win.
06:04Like, tonight would be, if they would have lost last night, tonight would be a pressure-packed thing.
06:08You got Parker Messick on the mound.
06:10Now, it feels more like an opportunity.
06:13Now, that said, like, yeah, you want to win when Parker Messick's on the mound.
06:17And the guy he's pitching against has been good this postseason, obviously.
06:21But you want to win when your aces are up there on the mound.
06:24But when you have a guy like Foster Griffin, who maybe is a little bit underrated,
06:28maybe is a little bit underrated by me, all right?
06:31Because I know when he first got here, there were some Washington fans who got in like,
06:35eh, it's starting to fall off there.
06:37And there were a couple of bad outings.
06:39To see the way that they played yesterday, I don't know how a Guardians fan can be anything but excited.
06:46Hopeful, excited.
06:46You can remain respectful of the Rays and their talent and not try to be crazy.
06:51I'm not saying that.
06:52But I think that you could be very excited about the start of this series.
06:56Yeah, I mean, this is cloud nine.
06:59This is a cloud nine situation.
07:00I think so.
07:01Because a week ago, this team was buried.
07:04It was literally seven days ago.
07:07Everybody wanted their hitting coach fired.
07:09It was a blame Dolan radio.
07:10We don't have enough money to compete, even though, you know, I didn't think that was,
07:15you know, a massive factor against the White Sox of all teams.
07:18But that's what we were doing on this very radio station.
07:22Every call was just bemoaning what a disaster this was, how well we only really made the playoffs
07:29because of the watered down field and everything.
07:31Seven days later, you might have the best offense in the postseason if you actually go by the numbers.
07:38And their trade deadline moves look insanely good.
07:42Like, transform the team into a ball club that's three wins away from going to the World Series.
07:49Bailey wasn't technically a deadline guy, but him, Joe Adele, I mean, that, you can't say enough.
07:56Go ahead, Owen.
07:57I know you wanted to say something.
07:58Seven days ago, there were people in the media, not in the media, everyone, tweeting, writing,
08:06if Seattle wants him, they can have him, about Steven Vogt.
08:09Yeah.
08:10And, I mean, his worst season, they came back from 15 and a half games.
08:17That was last year.
08:18As far as finishes going, right?
08:20I think it's a way to cope.
08:21It's a way to cope.
08:21You've got to blame somebody.
08:22You don't want to blame the players.
08:23I mean, and honestly, like, John, like, there is, you know, you mentioned Vogt.
08:29And this whole show, obviously, this show is as pro-Vot as probably any show in Cleveland.
08:35Especially when he makes a joke about football, guys.
08:38I mean, that's, it's always going to, like, I want to shake your hand after those type of things.
08:42But I think there's a lot more people, like, John's an outsider.
08:45I'm not being mean to John.
08:46I'm telling the truth here.
08:47Where John looks at it from an outsider and a youthful perspective.
08:51He's 24 years old.
08:53He's from Philly, right?
08:53Big market.
08:54Where am I going with this?
08:55Well, you have seen in baseball, John is a baseball guy and a young guy.
09:00And, again, from a big market.
09:01You have seen how they have taken power away from managers over time.
09:05So, there are young people who believe that managers are just interchangeable here.
09:10Like, there were people who did not believe when we had Mike Chernoff on, when he had said, no, Stephen
09:16Vogt's absolutely an essential part of the lineup.
09:18We know that there's organizations that make the lineups, not the managers.
09:22We are not one of them.
09:23And there are people like, no, I just don't believe that.
09:24I don't know how you can not believe that.
09:27So, again, that's kind of what you're fighting there.
09:30That stigma.
09:31Like, you're in a position where they've kind of taken the power away and it becomes a figurehead position.
09:36But, look at how much he's paid compared to other managers.
09:39Like, what is he, the fourth highest paid manager in the American League and the seventh overall?
09:44Chernoff's not walking down and, or, I'm sorry, Antonetti's not walking down and making the pitching change in the middle
09:51of the game.
09:51Well, he's not doing that.
09:52He's not making the decision to put pinch hitters in.
09:55A unpopular decision to put a pinch hitter in like what happened last night with Angel Martinez.
09:59And then, of course, Angel Martinez comes through in the ninth inning for you.
10:04Finally, I think that what you're saying about Stephen Vogt is true.
10:09I just think it becomes a scapegoat.
10:12It becomes a way to cope with it when they were down 0-2 in the series to Chicago.
10:16It's where people are freaking out and, well, Stephen Vogt can go.
10:19And I'm like, well, that's, that's not the way we do things.
10:22Like, maybe you don't want a manager to have that much power.
10:25Maybe that's the case.
10:26Maybe you want the power in the hands of your players.
10:29Okay, fine.
10:31But, I'm sorry, I don't think we're talking baseball at all this morning.
10:34I don't think we're talking Guardians from the month of August on if Stephen Vogt isn't the manager of the
10:40baseball team.
10:41And I would say, too, like, holy cow to Jose Ramirez postseason.
10:46And after those first two games, and remember, game three is, in that White Sox series, is when Jose came
10:53alive.
10:53And he has been, like, the best player in baseball since then.
10:58Yeah.
10:58It is, it is the, it is the, the guy that I kept saying, yeah, we're going to the postseason.
11:04That's great that we made the postseason, but we don't have our MVP candidate.
11:07So, I don't really give us much of a shot.
11:10MVP candidate.
11:11I mean, he has been maybe the best that baseball has to offer since game three of the ALDS.
11:18This has been awesome.
11:19I'm so happy that he has had so many moments.
11:23Yeah.
11:23And then he's even getting the luck to go his way to the infield kind of squibber.
11:29That thing was hilarious.
11:30And you could just see how deflating that was to that crowd.
11:33It almost sounded at times like it was a pro-Guardians crowd.
11:37Well, I wanted to say that.
11:37Because there's so many Clevelanders that were down there.
11:40I mean, I know a bunch of people that were in attendance last night.
11:43That either, that either made their trip, drove from Fort Lauderdale or Miami or Sarasota.
11:50I priced out game five and game six.
11:52And it was almost the same price to fly down to Tampa and get tickets to game six.
11:58Do we have to do a market watch for an away game?
12:01Sure.
12:01I mean, we can.
12:02Okay.
12:03We have a ton of people that follow us listening down there.
12:06We can do the market watch after the way last night went.
12:08I don't know that it'll, I think it's a moot point.
12:13As far as?
12:14I don't know if we're going to six.
12:17Oh.
12:18Oh.
12:19I mean, they did whatever they wanted offensively last night.
12:24They did whatever they wanted last night.
12:26That gets their A's, too.
12:27I love your feelings.
12:29You just saw.
12:30If Jose Ramirez continues to look like a 12-year-old boy having fun playing baseball,
12:35because that's a different Jose than I've ever seen.
12:38Hey, let me ask you this, though.
12:39Let me ask you this.
12:40If I said that.
12:42Yeah, I'd kill you.
12:43I don't care.
12:44I love the Guardians.
12:45Okay.
12:46I didn't say you didn't.
12:47I've been more locked into this team than I've been on any team.
12:50That's not a question.
12:51Even over my Chiefs at points.
12:52That's not a question.
12:53Without a doubt.
12:54That's not a question.
12:54That is not being brought into question.
12:57What's being brought into question is proper respect.
13:01Hubris is a bad thing for Guardians fans.
13:04I know other shows like to use that word.
13:05I'm sorry.
13:06Hubris is a really bad thing for a Cleveland sports fan.
13:10The arrogance that is seen.
13:12And I said, while I feel as good as I felt ever after game one of a series, I have
13:21to remain respectful of the Rays.
13:23History plays into that.
13:24Yeah, history plays into it a lot for me, too.
13:27And I know they won the AL East, and that's the hardest division in baseball and all the talk that
13:33you can have around that.
13:34But history tells me that the one team that's stood in our way for 10 years is already eliminated.
13:41And it wasn't the Tampa Bay Rays.
13:43Hey, that's true.
13:44The Yankees are gone.
13:45They're the only ones.
13:46Same deal.
13:48When I watched the Chiefs, when Tom Brady was available, I was worried about getting past him.
13:53Once he was gone, had no problem.
13:55I'm just surprised.
13:56Had no fears in that stuff.
13:57I feel the same way right now about the way after they came out and just blistered the baseball last
14:03night.
14:03Did whatever they wanted.
14:05Role players, not just contributing, but look like they belong there.
14:09It looks like a different team.
14:11Seven in heaven.
14:12We're going to do it at 7 o'clock.
14:13Come hell or high water, I'm going to do it.
14:15Also, the neutral zone at 840 this morning.
14:17Matt Underwood going to join us at 9.
14:19Guardians TV play-by-play announcer.
14:21I want to ask him about last night's game.
14:22Obviously, what's to come?
14:24Because by 9 o'clock, we are starting to get ready for Game 2 of the ALCS against the Tampa
14:29Bay Rays.
14:29Parker Messick on the mound against Freddy Peralta.
14:32Peralta's been good this postseason.
14:34It will be a tough matchup.
14:352-1-6-4-7-4-0-0-92.
14:37All right.
14:37Are you talking tough after Game 1 of the ALCS?
14:42Because I got to tell you, usually the guy in the other room who pulls me back from saying these
14:47silly things is the one saying it.
14:50So we do have a role reversal here.
14:51And I was shocked at what I heard in the stands last night.
14:55Ken Carman, Anthony Lyman, take us with you to work on the free Odyssey.
