The wedding at Cana tells us about a celebration that nearly became an embarrassment, and a remarkable act of Jesus Christ that revealed something extraordinary about who He was.
There's a detail in this Bible story that I've always found fascinating.
Most of the people attending that wedding probably had no idea what was happening behind the scenes.
They had gathered to celebrate a marriage. There was food, conversation, and the happiness that comes from being surrounded by family and friends.
Then the wine ran out.
Mary noticed the problem and approached Jesus. She told the servants to follow His instructions, and they filled six large stone jars with water.
When the banquet master tasted what the servants brought him, the water had become excellent wine.
He was so impressed that he questioned why the finest wine had been saved until later in the celebration.
And just like that, an occasion that could have ended in embarrassment became the setting for Jesus' first recorded miraculous sign.
I want you to imagine being one of those servants.
You knew what you put into those jars.
You knew what came out.
And you had witnessed something that would be remembered for thousands of years.
But beyond the extraordinary miracle, I want us to think about something closer to home.
How many beautiful moments have we missed because we were distracted by our problems?
How many opportunities to enjoy somebody's company have we postponed?
How many ordinary blessings have we treated as unimportant simply because they weren't enormous, life-changing events?
I think about those questions because I've learned that happiness doesn't always arrive with a major accomplishment.
Sometimes it arrives in the middle of an ordinary afternoon.
A friend makes you laugh. Somebody remembers your birthday. You hear a song that brings back a wonderful memory. You spend a few minutes with somebody you love.
Nothing about those moments may seem particularly remarkable.
But they become the memories we treasure.
In this faith-based motivational conversation, we're going to explore the biblical account of Jesus turning water into wine, the connection between Christian faith and joy, and the importance of appreciating the life God has placed in front of us.
We'll also talk about finding encouragement when you're stressed, recovering your appreciation for the little things, and recognizing that happiness is not something you need to postpone indefinitely.
I don't believe we honor God by ignoring the goodness He's placed in our lives.
And I certainly don't believe we should spend every day expecting something bad to happen.
There is still goodness worth noticing.
There are still reasons to be grateful.
And sometimes, discovering those reasons begins with simply paying attention.
As you watch, think about someone who has brought happiness into your life.
Maybe it's time to tell that person how much their kindness meant to you.

00:00You know, I think sometimes we forget that God wants us to be happy.
00:07I really do.
00:08You know, we spend so much time talking about the difficult parts of our lives.
00:13We talk about struggles, disappointments, broken relationships, financial problems,
00:20and all the things that keep us awake at night.
00:24And those conversations matter.
00:27Believe me, they do.
00:30There are people walking around right now carrying burdens that nobody else knows anything about.
00:39But today, I want to do something a little different.
00:43Today, I want to talk about happiness.
00:47Not the kind of happiness you have to pretend to feel.
00:51Not the fake smile you put on when everybody asks how you're doing,
00:55and you tell them everything's wonderful when it really isn't.
01:00I'm talking about genuine happiness.
01:04The kind that makes you laugh until your stomach hurts.
01:07You know the kind.
01:09It comes from being around people you love.
01:12The kind that makes you wake up in the morning and actually look forward to what the day might bring.
01:18And I want to tell you something that I think is pretty remarkable.
01:25Jesus Christ understood that kind of happiness.
01:28In fact, there's a story in the Bible that I absolutely love because it shows us a sign of Jesus
01:37that I don't think we talk about nearly enough.
01:40It's the story of Jesus that I don't think we talk about in the Bible that I don't think we
01:43talk about in the Bible.
01:43Now, think about that for a minute.
01:46Of all the places Jesus could have performed his first miracle, he chose a wedding celebration.
01:54Not a battlefield, not a palace, not some enormous public gathering where he could impress thousands of people.
02:02A wedding, two people getting married, families coming together, friends celebrating, people enjoying food, conversation, and one another's company.
02:16Just ordinary people having a wonderful day.
02:21And Jesus, well, Jesus was right there with them.
02:26You can find this story in the second chapter of John.
02:31Jesus has been invited to a wedding in a town called Cana in Galilee.
02:37His mother, Mary, well, she was there too along with his disciples.
02:42Now, the Bible doesn't tell us every detail about that celebration.
02:46We don't know all the conversations that took place or what made people smile that afternoon.
02:54But we know something important.
02:58Jesus accepted the invitation.
03:01He showed up.
03:03And I think there's a beautiful lesson in that simple fact.
03:06Sometimes we picture Jesus as somebody who's always standing on a hillside, delivering a sermon, or walking down a dusty
03:15road, teaching people about heaven.
03:18Yeah, he did do those things.
03:21But he also attended a wedding.
03:24He participated in the ordinary happiness of ordinary people.
03:29He wasn't too important to be there.
03:33And then something happened.
03:36The wedding celebration ran out of wine.
03:41Now, today that might not sound like the end of the world, right?
03:44Somebody could just run down to the store, grab a few more bottles, and life would go on.
03:50But back then, hospitality was an enormous responsibility.
03:56A wedding celebration could last for days.
03:58And running out of something important would have been terribly embarrassing for the family.
04:05Imagine that.
04:07You've planned this beautiful celebration.
04:10You've invited everybody you love.
04:13This is supposed to be one of the happiest moments of your life.
04:18And suddenly, something goes wrong.
04:23Now, isn't that just like life?
04:25You could plan everything perfectly, and something still happens that you didn't expect.
04:32Well, Mary noticed the problem.
04:36She went to Jesus and simply told him they had no more wine.
04:41And after the exchange, she turned to the servants and said something that I think is worth remembering.
04:49Do whatever he tells you.
04:52Now, I love that.
04:54She didn't explain to the servants how Jesus was going to fix the situation.
04:59She simply pointed them toward him.
05:03And Jesus told the servants to fill six large stone water jars.
05:08So they did.
05:10They filled those jars with water all the way to the brim.
05:15Then Jesus told them to draw some out and take it to the man responsible for the banquet.
05:21And when that man tasted it, the water had become wine.
05:28But here's the part that makes me smile.
05:31It wasn't just ordinary wine.
05:34It was so good that the man overseeing the celebration called the bridegroom over and wondered why he had saved
05:41the best until now.
05:43Most people, he explained, served the best wine first.
05:48But somehow, at this wedding, the best had come later.
05:54Think about that.
05:56The celebration was in trouble, and Jesus didn't simply prevent a disaster.
06:01He provided something wonderful.
06:04He took an ordinary moment that was about to become embarrassing and turned it into an extraordinary one.
06:12And the newly married couple probably didn't even know everything that had happened behind the scenes.
06:20But the servants knew.
06:23And Jesus knew.
06:25So did his mother.
06:27His disciples saw enough to recognize his glory.
06:31And they put their faith in him.
06:34And that's what I want you to think about today.
06:43Jesus cared about people's joy.
06:47He cared that a young couple was celebrating their marriage.
06:51He cared about something that, compared with the suffering in the world, might have seemed small.
06:58And that tells me something about the heart of our Savior.
07:02He isn't interested only in our emergencies.
07:06He's interested in our lives.
07:09The whole thing.
07:10The laughter.
07:11The friendships.
07:13The celebrations.
07:15The little victories.
07:16And those beautiful moments when everything just feels right.
07:21You know, I wonder how many times we overlook the happiness God has already placed right in front of us.
07:29Maybe it's that first cup of coffee in the morning.
07:33Maybe it's hearing somebody you love laughing in the other room.
07:38Maybe it's an unexpected phone call from an old friend.
07:42Maybe it's sitting outside on a beautiful afternoon, watching the clouds roll by, and realizing just, for just a little
07:53while,
07:53you don't need anything else, I love those moments, because those moments matter.
08:02And I think we're supposed to enjoy them.
08:05Somewhere along the way, a lot of us start believing that being a good Christian meant always being serious.
08:13Always worrying about whether we're doing enough.
08:17Always concentrating on what's wrong with the world.
08:22But I don't believe Jesus came into this world to take the joy out of living.
08:29Quite the opposite.
08:31In John 15, verse 11, Jesus told his disciples that he wanted his joy to be in them,
08:38and that their joy would be complete.
08:42Listen to that.
08:46He wanted them to have joy.
08:48Not just obedience, and not just knowledge, but joy.
08:54And I think that's something we ought to take seriously, even if taking it seriously means learning to laugh a
09:01little more.
09:02Because, my friends, life is short.
09:06I don't say that to make you sad.
09:08I say it because it's true.
09:11We don't know how many mornings we have left, how many conversations we'll get to enjoy,
09:18or how many opportunities we'll have to tell somebody we love them.
09:25And I would hate for any of us to spend all our time waiting for life to become perfect before
09:31we allow ourselves to be happy.
09:34Because life isn't going to be perfect.
09:38There will always be bills.
09:40There will always be somebody who gets on your nerves.
09:44There will always be things that don't go the way you planned.
09:48But happiness?
09:50Well, happiness doesn't have to wait until every problem has been solved.
09:55Just look at the wedding.
09:58Something went wrong right in the middle of the celebration.
10:02And Jesus was there.
10:04Now, I'm not going to tell you that Jesus will magically fix every inconvenience in your life.
10:11That wouldn't be honest.
10:13And I don't think that's what this story promises.
10:16But I do believe it shows us something beautiful about him.
10:21He isn't distant from the moments that matter to us.
10:25He cares.
10:27And I also believe there's another lesson here.
10:30Sometimes the best things in life arrive when we least expect them.
10:35Remember the man at the wedding and what he said?
10:39They had saved the best until last.
10:42Now, I know that was a comment about the wine.
10:46But every time I read it, every time I think about it,
10:51it reminds me not to assume that my happiest days are behind me.
10:56Maybe you've been through a rough stretch lately.
11:00Maybe you've experienced disappointment.
11:05Maybe you've gotten a little older and started looking backward,
11:08thinking about the wonderful things that used to be.
11:13I understand that.
11:15But listen to me.
11:17You haven't lived every good day you're going to live yet.
11:23There may still be wonderful people you haven't met.
11:27There may still be conversations that change your life.
11:31There may still be places you haven't seen,
11:35friendships you haven't formed,
11:36and moments of laughter you can't even imagine right now.
11:42And there may be somebody out there
11:44who needs the happiness that you can bring into their life.
11:49Have you ever thought about that?
11:52You can actually be part of somebody else's answered prayer
11:56without doing anything extraordinary.
11:58You can call somebody who's lonely.
12:02You can encourage somebody who's struggling.
12:06You can make somebody laugh who hasn't smiled in days.
12:11You can sit down with somebody
12:14and let them know that their company matters to you.
12:19Sometimes, happiness is something we receive.
12:23And sometimes, it's something we give away.
12:29And the beautiful thing is,
12:31when we give it away,
12:33we often find ourselves with more of it.
12:36I think Jesus understood that better than anybody.
12:40He welcomed children.
12:42He shared meals with people
12:44who weren't always welcomed by everyone else.
12:47He brought hope into homes that had been filled with sorrow.
12:52He reminded people that they mattered.
12:56And at the wedding in Cana,
12:58He made sure an ordinary family celebration
13:01didn't end in embarrassment.
13:04That's our Jesus.
13:06A Savior who knows our tears,
13:09but who also understands our happiness.
13:12A Savior who walks with us through the darkest valleys,
13:16but who doesn't ask us to live in those valleys forever.
13:22A Savior who wants us to know the joy
13:25that has been placed in our lives.
13:28So, here's what I'd love for you to do today.
13:32For, find something to be happy about.
13:36Whatever it is, it doesn't have to be big.
13:40And don't force it if you're hurting today.
13:43I know, some days just making it through an accomplishment
13:47is enough.
13:51But if a little happiness comes your way,
13:54let yourself enjoy it.
13:56If somebody makes you laugh, laugh.
13:59If somebody invites you to spend time together,
14:04consider saying yes.
14:06And if you have an opportunity to create a wonderful memory,
14:10don't automatically put it off until tomorrow.
14:16And if somebody you love is nearby,
14:19tell them how much they mean to you.
14:22Because one day,
14:23when we look back at our lives,
14:26I don't think we're going to wish we spent more time worrying.
14:29I think we're going to remember the laughter.
14:34We're going to remember the people.
14:38We're going to remember those beautiful,
14:40ordinary days when being alive felt like a gift.
14:45And maybe,
14:46maybe that's one of the reasons
14:49I love this wedding story so much.
14:53Jesus could have chosen so many different settings
14:56for his first miracle.
14:58But he chose a celebration.
15:01He chose a moment when people had gathered together
15:05because of love.
15:06And he gave them something wonderful.
15:10So today,
15:12whatever else happens in your life,
15:15I hope you can find a reason to smile.
15:18I hope you can remember a happy moment
15:21and maybe make a new one.
15:24I hope you'll remember that following Jesus
15:27isn't only about learning how to survive difficult days.
15:32It's also about learning how to appreciate
15:35the beautiful ones.
15:38Because happiness isn't something we should feel guilty about.
15:42It's one of life's blessings.
15:45And I believe the God who gave us laughter,
15:48friendship,
15:49love,
15:50and the ability to experience joy
15:52wants us to appreciate those gifts.
15:56So,
15:57go enjoy something today.
15:59Smile at somebody.
16:02Make somebody laugh.
16:04Celebrate something good.
16:06And remember,
16:08remember that beautiful wedding in Cana
16:11where Jesus turned ordinary water
16:14into extraordinary wine.
16:17Because sometimes right in the middle
16:19of an ordinary day,
16:21life gives us a reason to celebrate.
16:24And wouldn't it be wonderful
16:27if we were paying enough attention to notice?
16:32God bless you, my friend.
16:34And I hope something happens today
16:37that makes you smile so big
16:39you can't help but share it with somebody else.
16:42Because this world has enough sadness.
16:47Let's make a little room for happiness, too.
16:52God bless you.
16:55My name is Douglas Van der Graaff,
16:57and I believe in Jesus Christ.
17:01God bless every single one of you
17:04and everyone you love.
17:07Bye-bye.
17:08Bye-bye.
