House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a sharp attack on Republicans, claiming they have “nothing, nada, zero” to show for their control of Congress. Jeffries accused the GOP of failing to deliver for American families, criticized House Republican leadership, and pledged that Democrats would continue pushing back against Republican policies and Donald Trump’s agenda ahead of key political battles in Washington.

00:00House Democrats remain focused on making life more affordable for the American people.
00:08Donald Trump promised to lower costs on day one.
00:11Costs haven't gone down in the United States of America, costs have gone up.
00:16The affordability crisis is real.
00:18It is not a hoax.
00:20And far too many people across this country, millions of hardworking American taxpayers
00:26are struggling to live paycheck to paycheck, can't thrive, and can barely survive because
00:34of toxic Republican policies that have made life more expensive for the American people.
00:42House Democrats are committed to driving down the high cost of living.
00:47Housing costs are too high, grocery bills are too high, health care costs are too high, gas
00:53prices are too high, and utility bills are too high.
00:58America is far too expensive.
01:00And Republican policies have made a bad situation even worse.
01:06They have been a disaster as it relates to the economy.
01:10And everyday Americans know it.
01:12Donald Trump's reckless and costly war of choice has cost everyday Americans hundreds if not
01:22thousands of dollars more in increased costs, particularly as it relates to gas prices.
01:28This war, this reckless and costly war of choice needs to end today.
01:35House Democrats are going to advance a War Powers Resolution on the floor this week.
01:41And all we need are a handful of Republicans to join us.
01:45And we can end this reckless and costly war of choice.
01:48A war that has cost the American taxpayer over $100 billion, that's extraordinary, and left
02:00our country in a weaker position relative to Iran than when this reckless and costly war
02:06of choice began.
02:08Questions?
02:10I want to get your reaction to President Trump's appointment of Bill Pulte to the acting DNI.
02:18What's your reaction to the appointment, and do you think that will complicate 50702 negotiations?
02:23The appointment of Bill Pulte as the acting director of national intelligence is another indication
02:34of how unserious, reckless, and dangerous Donald Trump and his administration are with respect
02:41to the national security of the American people.
02:44What exactly are Bill Pulte's qualifications?
02:49Does he have a national security background?
02:52The answer would be no.
02:53Does he have a military background?
02:56The answer would be no.
02:58Does he have a law enforcement background?
03:02The answer would be no.
03:05What qualifies Bill Pulte to hold one of the most important national security positions for
03:13the United States of America?
03:14One thing, apparently, that Bill Pulte is willing to say anything or do anything that Donald Trump
03:22demands, no matter how reckless, vengeful, or unlawful Donald Trump's demand may be.
03:30Bill Pulte has weaponized the federal government to go after Donald Trump's perceived enemies.
03:38He's weaponized the federal government to go after Lisa Cook.
03:42He's weaponized the federal government to go after Adam Schiff.
03:45He's weaponized the federal government to go after New York State Attorney General.
03:49Tis James, Bill Pulte is deeply unserious, deeply dangerous, and deeply unqualified.
03:55His supposed elevation as the acting director of national intelligence will jeopardize the effort to pass surveillance legislation that was
04:11already on life support.
04:12Why in the world should Democrats or any member of Congress trust Donald Trump, Kash Patel, or Bill Pulte with
04:25the privacy of the American people?
04:29Mr. Leader, the Republican agenda this week is-
04:32Chad, did I call on you?
04:33You looked at me.
04:34Okay, I said so.
04:37That was a slick move right there.
04:39The slick is the Nixon playoffs here.
04:41All right, Nixon 6.
04:42We'll talk about that.
04:43All right.
04:44So, the Republicans this week have a number of fraud bills on Twitter.
04:47Do you think they're trying to dare some vulnerable Democrats to vote with them unless they would turn this around
04:55against them in the public?
04:57Republicans in the House are in deep trouble.
05:00They are on the verge of losing their majority.
05:03They understand it.
05:04The Republicans have done nothing to make life more affordable for the American people.
05:09Costs having gone down in the United States of America under complete Republican control, costs have gone up.
05:15And so, the legislative games that they may be playing on the floor of the House of Representatives this week,
05:22next week, this month, next month, over the next several months in advance of the midterm election, the American people
05:28have already concluded that the Republican-controlled Congress has been a failure.
05:32And it's up to us as Democrats to continue to make the case that we actually will be focused on
05:38making their life more affordable.
05:40What about Democrats voting yes on people from swing districts?
05:43Listen, Democrats are going to make a decision based on what's the right thing to do for the district that
05:48they represent.
05:49And I trust every single Democrat, particularly those who are in swing districts, to do the right thing for the
05:55people that they are privileged to represent.
05:57Thanks.
05:59Speaker Mike Johnson has repeatedly canceled voting days like today at the last minute.
06:03What's your reaction to those rapid schedule changes?
06:06And if you become Speaker, would you keep the House in session more often?
06:10Well, we certainly are committed as Democrats to get things done for the American people at a moment when there
06:16are a whole host of serious issues that need to be addressed, particularly as it relates to making life more
06:22affordable for everyday Americans.
06:24The Republicans can't get out of their own way.
06:27Democrats have repeatedly governed in the minority as if we were in the majority.
06:32And we're going to do so again this week as it relates to what I believe will be a successful
06:37war powers resolution tomorrow and then a successful vote to stand up for the free world, for democracy, for truth
06:47and the Ukrainian people on Thursday.
06:50At the end of the day, what exactly do Republicans have to show for being in complete control of Congress
06:58over the last 18 or so months?
07:01The answer would be nothing, nada, zero.
07:07They've made life worse for the American people.
07:09And so that's one of the reasons why I'm convinced that Republicans continue to cancel votes and do everything they
07:16can every week to get out of town before sundown.
07:27I have not had any conversation with him and I'm unaware of whether he's under investigation or not.
07:38I've seen those public reports on my way into the Capitol.
07:41We obviously take these things seriously, but I have not had any conversation with the ethics committee.
07:47Do you intend to speak with him?
07:50This is Jeffrey.
07:51It seems, according to a leader,
07:53that Republicans are going to try to move forward on this reconciliation package this week.
07:58If Republicans ultimately do pass this party-line vote,
08:01then how do reforms and Democrats have followed up?
08:04What's this government chucked out?
08:07Well, the American people have clearly come to the conclusion that taxpayer dollars should be spent to make their life
08:14more affordable.
08:14And our view is that taxpayer dollars should not be spent, we're talking about $70 billion,
08:20on top of what ICE already has received from Republicans,
08:25to brutalize and kill American citizens or to violently target law-abiding immigrant families.
08:32There's a clear choice between the Democratic vision of strong, safe, secure borders,
08:42while at the same time having immigration reform that is fair, just, and humane,
08:47and the Republican vision, which has unleashed a violent mass deportation machine on the American people.
08:54Donald Trump promised that immigration enforcement in this country, under his so-called leadership,
09:00was going to target the worst of the worst.
09:03That's what he said.
09:05They were going to target violent felons.
09:07They're not targeting violent felons.
09:09I didn't see any violent felons at Delaney Hall, which I visited with other members of the New Jersey delegation
09:16on Sunday.
09:19I saw people who were entrepreneurs, who were active, productive members of their community.
09:25I saw an 18-year-old teenage girl who's been in custody for months
09:32and was ripped away from her family, her community, and her classmates,
09:38and was being held as of Sunday, just a month prior to her graduation.
09:44That's not the worst of the worst.
09:46And so there's no circumstance where Democrats can support Donald Trump's violent, ice, mass deportation machine,
09:55and the American people don't support it.
09:58But did Democrats sacrifice their leverage in trying to get the immigration?
10:01What happened is that the Republicans completely and totally caved.
10:07We made clear that the Department of Homeland Security should be reopened,
10:13with the exception of ICE and Donald Trump's mass violent deportation machine.
10:20And the Republicans insisted from the very beginning that was never going to happen, but guess what? It did.
10:26And we'll continue to battle it out in terms of bringing about the type of dramatic reform to ICE
10:33that the American people are demanding.
10:36ICE should be compelled to conduct itself like every other cop, police officer, or law enforcement agency in the country.
10:43That's not too much to ask.
10:45They're out of control, and they need to be reined in.
10:48Thanks.
10:50Mr. We are up.
10:51The Mayor of O'Donoghue is the worst against the members of the caucus of New York, Mr. Espayat.
10:55How does that change your relationship with the mayor?
10:58As I mentioned yesterday, the mayor and I have agreed to strongly disagree as it relates to Congressman Adriano Espayat,
11:11who's a bold, effective leader.
11:15He's been battling Donald Trump.
11:17He's been battling MAGA extremism.
11:20Adriano Espayat has been battling ICE to rein them in, because he knows they're completely and totally out of control.
11:28And he's been pushing back aggressively against Donald Trump's reckless and costly war of choice.
11:33I'm going to continue to stand strongly behind Representative Adriano Espayat, and we're going to work hard to make sure
11:41he's reelected.
11:43Governor Sherrill has come under a lot of scrutiny for deploying the state troopers against the anti-ICE protesters at
11:50the Lane Hall.
11:51How would you assess Governor Sherrill's response to the situation there?
11:56Well, Governor Sherrill has overall been an effective governor.
11:58It's a very difficult situation because of the inflammatory tactics that have been used by Donald Trump, ICE agents, as
12:08we've seen in other parts of the country, particularly what went down in Minneapolis.
12:14And we're going to continue, as Governor Sherrill has done, to urge everyone to make sure that they exercise their
12:21right to protest peacefully in a manner consistent with the First Amendment.
12:26And I think she's working as hard as she can to handle the situation as best she can.
12:32What we need to have happen is that ICE needs to be brought under control.
12:37And the only way to do that is to ensure that we can pass in this Congress the types of
12:41dramatic reforms that allow immigration enforcement in this country to be fair, just, and humane, consistent with who we are
12:50as a country, a nation both anchored in the rule of law and a nation of immigrants.
12:57Thanks.
12:58Thank you, Senator.
12:59On the topic of the reconciliation bill, if Republicans do in the passage of the bill about the reforms that
13:04Democrats were looking for, how much would Democrats incorporate that into them?
13:09Well, House Democrats are going to continue to push for the use of taxpayer dollars in a manner that actually
13:18is designed to make life more affordable for the American people.
13:22That's what the American people want.
13:24As opposed to what happened in this budget reconciliation bill the first time around, the one big ugly bill, part
13:31one, where Republicans ripped away Medicaid from the American people, causing up to 14 million folks to be in jeopardy
13:41of losing their health insurance.
13:43Hospitals, nursing homes, community-based health clinics are closing as a result of what happened in that one big ugly
13:47bill.
13:49Nutritional assistance was, you know, nutritional assistance was ripped away from millions of children, seniors, and veterans.
13:56And all of this was done both to reward Republican MAGA extremist billionaire donors with massive tax breaks that they
14:05did not need and do not deserve, and to give ICE a $70 billion or so slush fund.
14:18Which has been used to unleash brutality on everyday Americans and, in some cases, to kill American citizens, as was
14:27the case in Minneapolis with Renee Nicole Good and Alex Freddie.
14:31The whole thing is outrageous and unacceptable.
14:35And all of our challenges that this country is facing can be traced to the fact that Republicans are focused
14:44on the wrong things.
14:45They want to jam their extreme ideology down the throats of the American people, as opposed to actually working to
14:51make life more affordable for the American people.
14:53Our commitment as Democrats will continue to be drive down the high cost of living and make life more affordable
15:00for hardworking American taxpayers across the country.
15:04Thanks.
15:05Congresswoman Debbie Washington Schultz is running in Florida's 20th district.
15:09A number of black political leaders in the state have said this grand black representation in Florida.
15:14Do you support her run in that district? What's your response to this criticism?
15:17I haven't made a decision as it relates to that particular race. Everybody has a right to run where they
15:23see fit.
15:25They got to go make their case to the people that they hope to represent moving forward.
15:29And that's what I've communicated directly to Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz.
15:34Obviously, she has a strong track record of accomplishment here in the Congress and on behalf of the people that
15:40she's represented over the years in Florida.
15:43At the same period of time, I think we all recognize the sensitivities of the moment in terms of an
15:50unprecedented Jim Crow like assault on black political representation
15:54that has been unleashed by the Supreme Court's outrageous decision to gut the Voting Rights Act.
16:01And it's an environment that all of us need to be sensitive to as we move forward.
16:12I haven't taken a look at it yet.
16:15Thanks.
16:17Republicans for a long time, it's been years, obviously been taking Democrats as Socialists.
16:22That seems to have helped in 2024.
16:24Just to back off what Nick had asked you about the Mayor, not only endorsing against SAOP,
16:31but also has made some primary endorsements for these Democratic Socialists.
16:35As you are, you know, thinking about the majority, they could be elected.
16:39It's not like those seats are going to suddenly flip Republican.
16:41They could be elected as part of your caucus.
16:43And what would you do to kind of dispel all those rules when they are declared Democratic Socialists?
16:51Well, I stand behind every single House Democratic incumbent,
16:57whether they're a member of the Congressional and Progressive Caucus,
17:00as is the case with Adriana Espaillat, a new Dem or a Blue Dog,
17:04and I'm going to continue to do that.
17:06And then we'll see what happens at the end of the day in terms of what the voters decide.
17:10But I think what unites House Democrats is the fact that we are all of the view
17:16that Donald Trump and Republican policies have been an economic disaster for everyday Americans.
17:23And that we actually, as a Congress, should be focused on making life better for the American people.
17:31Making sure that people can go see a doctor when they need one.
17:35That there are good paying jobs available to younger Americans who have worked hard,
17:40they're doing the right thing, they've gone to college or picked up a trade
17:45and now are unable to live comfortably and certainly are unable to, in many instances, to afford a home,
17:55which has always been a centerpiece of the American dream.
17:57These are the type of things that will unite House Democrats.
18:01They have up until this point and I think they will continue to as we move forward.
18:05When it's all said and done, after the election in November 3rd, we'll come together as a caucus
18:11and we'll lean into the issues that bring us together, driving down the high cost of living,
18:17fixing our broken health care system, and cleaning up corruption here in Washington, D.C.
18:23Thank you everyone.
