00:00I'm not feeling well today, but I didn't want to miss this one, so I'm making this video for you
00:06anyway.
00:07Every night something stands in the dark, wearing your mother's face, and asks one simple question.
00:14Can I go inside your heart?
00:16That's the trailer that got everyone talking, but here's what they didn't show you.
00:22Days before release, no critic had seen this movie, not one press screening.
00:27When a studio hides a film, it usually means one thing.
00:32So today I will tell you, is Other Mummy a hidden mess or a hidden surprise?
00:39Stay till the end, because my answer might shock you.
00:42Quite set up, no spoilers.
00:45Other Mummy is directed by Rob Savage, the filmmaker behind host and desk camp.
00:51It's based on Joe's Mallory Man's novels, incidents around the house.
00:56Jessica Chastain plays Ushala, a mother, and also the entity wearing her face.
01:03Joy Duplass plays the father, and young Arabella Oliver Clarks plays Bella, a little girl who has secret friend, her
01:12other mummy.
01:13Let's start with the good.
01:15First, this movie breaks a very annoying horror rule.
01:19You know that one?
01:21The child says there's something in my room.
01:24The parent says, it's just your imagination.
01:27And we wait an hour for them to believe her.
01:30Not her.
01:32The parents believe their daughter almost immediately.
01:35And I love that.
01:37Because it asks a real question.
01:39If your wife's twine appeared in your kitchen, who would you even call?
01:45Second, the performance.
01:47Jessica Chastain plays two versions of one woman.
01:51One is warm, warrior.
01:53Him and the others is wrong.
01:55And you feel the difference in the smallest movements.
01:59And little umbrella Oliver Clark, she carries the emotional weight of this film.
02:04Third, Rob Savage scarcely has an eye.
02:07There's an upside-down living room scene.
02:10There's the ball pit scene.
02:12There are moments where the capture shifts eyes.
02:15And for a second you think, okay, that's new.
02:18And the opening, it's genuinely unsettling.
02:21But here's the problem.
02:23The movie cannot decide yet what it wants to be.
02:27One minute it's a family drama, next a haunted house movie.
02:31Then a dark comedy.
02:32And some of these funny moments, they are not meant to be funny.
02:36Then they are jump scares.
02:39The director said there'd be one very two moments.
02:42And that's about right.
02:44But the best horror isn't what jumps out.
02:47It's what you imagine.
02:49And this movie shows its monster a little too much, a little too soon.
02:54Some of the effects look great.
02:56Some make you wonder if you are mean to laugh.
02:59And the paranormal investigator scene.
03:02It feels like it belong in a completely different film.
03:06But I will give it this.
03:07Underneath all the noise, there's something real.
03:11This story about a child who feels her family cracking.
03:14And sometimes the scariest monster isn't in the closest.
03:20It's a silence at the dinner table.
03:22When the film focuses on that it hurts.
03:25And I wish the whole movie had stayed there without giving anything away.
03:30The ending lands a truth that's heavier than any jump scare.
03:35Some people will find it powerful.
03:37Others will find it too little too late.
03:40I will let you decide it.
03:41So, was hiding it a red flag?
03:43Yes, the film is uneven.
03:46But was it totally a disaster?
03:48No.
03:48It's a movie with a brilliant idea, a great cast and a few scenes I won't forget.
03:54Trapped inside a film that doesn't trust its own best idea.
03:58I'm giving Other Mummy 6 out of 10.
04:01Worth watching if you love jump scares and do not mind messy storytelling.
04:06If you want a slow creepy masterpiece, wait for streaming.
04:10Now, tell me, if something in the dark acts to come into your heart, what would you say?
04:17Let me know in the comments and subscribe for more honest reviews.
04:21That's it today.
04:22Bye-bye.
