Torrential rain led to water quickly piling up in low-lying areas. as storm chaser Aaron Jayjack showed live on AccuWeather shortly after Isaias' official landfall.
Transcript
00:00There's Aaron in Destin, Florida. Aaron, I have the, there you are. Hey, take it away. It's all yours.
00:10Yeah, we're still here in Destin, Bernie. You know, we finally lost power here. You can see
00:16the power finally went out here. Dark skies all through this area where we're at, but a little
00:21bit, it looks like some light still, a little bit to the east maybe here in Destin, but we were
00:25talking about the floodwaters being a big problem here, that flood emergency. In fact, you can
00:31see this parking lot in the roadway here completely covered in water with four or five inches of
00:36water here back behind me, and this is kind of the scene all along the roadway here in Destin
00:42with lots of water piling up. You know, we had a bit of calm for a little while there where
00:47the wind died down and the rain died down, but that western eyewall seems to be coming through
00:51this area now. We're kind of getting clipped by that southwestern corner of the precip that's
00:56moving through right now. So some of the strongest winds we've had are actually happening right
01:00now. And of course, and that's why the power finally got knocked out here. You know, earlier
01:04we took a drive down to the coast, south of, just south of Destin, a little bit west of Miramar
01:10Beach and got right on that seawall. And actually we're surprised not to see any storm surge problems
01:16there. But you know, we have been getting north easterly, north northerly winds pretty much
01:21all day here. So, and in fact, we went down to the coast, we were getting easterly, so we weren't
01:25seeing that big push of water there in Destin. So I'm thinking maybe that surge is a little bit
01:31worse, a little bit east of Destin right now. Yeah, probably so.
01:34But I see we're still getting hammered by big, big wind gusts still hitting us here, Bernie.
01:39Back to you. All right, Aaron, anything that has surprised you about this storm thus far?
01:49Well, you know, I would say, you know, I've been hearing those reports of Pensacola with that strong
01:53western eyewall. And, you know, and we are kind of getting the effects of that western eyewall now
01:57here as the storm moves off to the north pretty rapidly now at this point. But I was pretty surprised
02:03how well the power stayed on here for one. But number two, I'm surprised that that surge wasn't
02:08a little bit worse here in Destin. You know, like I mentioned, kind of surprising getting
02:12those northerly or easterly winds all day and never actually getting into any southerly winds
02:16there to kind of help push that water up here in Destin. Back to you. And what, that behind you,
02:22is that water, is that from, is that tidal surge or is that from flooding? I'm sorry, you may have
02:27said
02:27that, but I'm just looking at the power of the water. Go ahead. Yeah, that is all from the rainfall
02:34here. So we're pretty well inland about a mile off the coast. So this is all that rain that's been
02:39falling, that two inch plus per hour rainfall rate. It's really piling up here in the low spots
02:45here in Destin right now, Bernie. All right, I just want to get your impression on this. It was just,
02:51Alex De Silva just told me Santa Rosa Sound confirmed 116 mile per hour wind gust.
03:01Good grief. And where is that located at exactly, Bernie? That's a good question.
03:06I will find out. Santa Rosa Sound, I'm going to find out myself. In fact, let me, let me do
03:13that. But
03:14really quick, what are you going to be doing the rest of tonight?
03:19Yeah, well, so we're going to sit here and monitor, kind of kind of look at the damage
03:22and situation that's going on here. You know, we're keeping our eye on the, for that tornado threat
03:27tomorrow. Yeah. So our plan is to eventually start making our way into Georgia in the morning
03:32and kind of try and cover that tornado threat across Georgia. I'm thinking it's going to be
03:36pretty bad there with severe weather tomorrow. So that's going to be our kind of shift in priorities
03:41to that as this thing moves off to the north tonight, Bernie. All right, that Santa Rosa Sound
03:47off to your south and east, to the southeast of Miramar Beach, uh, and, uh, north of, uh, between
03:53almost a little bit off to your east is that, uh, wind where we had 116 miles per hour. And
04:00I'm
04:00expecting, uh, Aaron, that's a tornado threat. We're going to start seeing those tornadoes start popping
04:06up here in the next few hours. All right, Aaron, you're underneath ECS. Let us know if anything changes.
04:12Thanks. Yep. Sounds good, Bernie. All right. All right. So again, uh, EC is making landfall. I was
04:20checking at some of the wind gusts, uh, here associated with ECS. Let me go back to the, uh,
04:28radar. There it is. So again, there's Destin.
