00:16trade between Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States exceeded 110 billion US
00:21dollars in 2025 and has continued to grow this year. In Yemen Saudi airstrikes targeting civilian
00:32transport and vital public infrastructure have killed at least three people and wounded 13 others
00:39across multiple provinces. In Belgium Labour unions have taken to the streets of Brussels to
00:50oppose Prime Minister Bart de Wever's austerity policies.
01:00Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
01:06We begin with the news so stay with us.
01:23The Commonwealth of Independent States Council of Heads of States convened in Turkmenistan Savasa
01:30National Tourist Zone where leaders outlined priorities for economic integration and the
01:36organisation's role in shaping a multipolar world. The agenda covered more than 15 issues including economic
01:43integration, transport connectivity, social development, humanitarian cooperation and the Commonwealth's
01:50future role in international affairs. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko emphasized that the
01:57CIS should contribute to the development of a multipolar international system alongside BRICS,
02:03the SCO and the African Union. Iranian President Masoud Pesherskyan proposed the new CIS Plus One format,
02:11seeking closer trade and regional cooperation between Iran and the bloc. Uzbekistan is set to assume the CIS
02:19chairmanship on January 1st, 2027.
02:25President Masoud Pesherskyan proposed the new CIS and the new CIS and the new CIS.
02:29Today we need genuine multilateralism in our region more than ever. The countries of this
02:35important and strategic region must be among the principal actors shaping a multipolar world. From this
02:42perspective, regional diplomacy for us is not merely about holding meetings. It must become a tool for crisis
02:50management, maintaining communication, preventing the escalation of conflicts and activating practical
02:57cooperation. This is the very approach that we pursue within the framework of the Islamic Republic of Iran's
03:05neighborhood party.
03:11In this context, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that trade between Russia and the
03:17Commonwealth of Independent States exceeded 110 billion US dollars in 2025 and has continued to grow this
03:25year. He noted that the organization could achieve even greater success by removing trade barriers. Putin also
03:33emphasized that CIS member states unanimously supported the creation of a just multipolar world order
03:40based on universally recognized principles of international law and the central role of the United Nations.
03:47In the summit, the President also addressed the critical environmental crisis and the declining water levels
03:54in the Caspian Sea.
04:04Also, trade between Russia and China is expected to close the year at a new record high, estimated to exceed
04:11270
04:11billion dollars. The Russian Deputy Prime Minister stated that he held a meeting with the Chinese ambassador in Moscow,
04:18where they identified various areas of bilateral cooperation such as trade, transportation and tourism.
04:25He also noted that the leaders of both countries hope to exceed these figures by 2030 when they aim to
04:32reach 300
04:33billion US dollars in trade. Also, they note that bilateral relations between the two nations are at their highest
04:40level, which strengthens as well ongoing cooperation and major projects in various sectors that contribute to global development.
04:57In the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Chinese diplomats issued statements criticizing the nuclear and military
05:04policy policies of the United States and Japan. Speaking at the Disarmament and International Security Committee,
05:09Chinese official Sun Xiaobo stated that the United States' extended deterrence policies affect global
05:17strategies and strategic stability. In this context, Sun also addressed Japan, calling on the country to abandon
05:24remilitarization, maintain its three non-nuclear principles and adhere to international non-proliferation agreements.
05:32Additionally, the Chinese delegation exercised its rights of reply, pointing to Japan's expanding defense spending and
05:40weapon exports as factors impacting regional security.
05:49The international community should reflect on any act that supports Japan's militarization. We urge Japan to deeply reflect on its
05:57history of aggression, completely cut itself off from militarism and fulfill its obligations under international law on nuclear non-proliferation.
06:25In Germany, Saudi airstrikes targeting civilian transport and vital public infrastructure have killed at least three people and wounded 13
06:33others across multiple provinces.
06:35on Friday. The attacks hit a public transport bus carrying medical patients in Thais and targeted
06:41fuel stations in Damar, alongside critical telecommunication towers in IBP Airport and
06:48also in Hodeida Airport. Germany military officials report nearly 1,900 Saudi strikes
06:55across 11 provinces. Human rights bodies condemned the escalation, accusing Rijad of deliberately
07:01targeting civilian infrastructure to cut off emergency medical aid and isolate Gemini communities.
07:12Also, the Gemini armed forces reported that Saudi Arabia has carried out at least 59 attacks on
07:18national territory in the past 24 hours. Since September, when the escalation of the offensive
07:24against Yemen began, the number of attacks has risen to 1,857, including air raids and missile
07:31strikes. Despite Saudi attacks targeting civilian sites and economic infrastructure in Yemen,
07:37Germany forces have retaliated by striking strategic Saudi targets, including airports and also
07:43military facilities. Meanwhile in Gaza, a woman and a child were killed in an Israeli strike on
07:55a residential building in the city of Al Sabra neighborhood nearly a year into a ceasefire.
08:02Footage filmed on Friday shows relatives grieving over the dead and also gathering for funeral prayers.
08:09The family recalled being sitting safely in their homes when suddenly they received a phone call
08:15telling them to evacuate. Within seconds, the strike hit while they were still at the front door.
08:21The last killings come three years after the Gaza war began in October 2023.
08:28Despite the ceasefire taking effect in October 2025, Israeli strikes and gunfire have continued across the
08:35enclave, leaving at least 1,400 people dead and 5,000 injured since October 2025 ceasefire agreement.
08:47They said there was a ceasefire, but there is no ceasefire. Every day there are massacres and every day people
08:53are killed.
08:53This is wrong. We want to live too. We have lost our children, our loved ones and our little ones.
09:00As for the ceasefire in Gaza, it doesn't exist on the ground. Everything being said is just media talk.
09:06The reality is different. We move around, go out and come back without feeling safe. We sleep without feeling safe.
09:15Now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telessure English
09:20where you'll find news in different formats,
09:22news updates and much more. We'll be right back, so stay with us.
09:44Welcome back to From the South.
09:46In Belgium, labour unions have taken to the streets of Brussels to oppose Prime Minister Bart de Weber's austerity policies.
09:53Thousands of workers flooded the capital to challenge severe budget cuts and defend public services, wages and social welfare programmes.
10:02The union-led mobilisation comes amid heightened social tensions and recent student protests, creating a united front against right-wing
10:11economic measures.
10:12Social leaders vowed to maintain momentum, condemning European austerity mandates that force working-class families to bear the cost of
10:21economic crisis.
10:27I am a citizen, a mother and a worker who is angry. I work, but I cannot make ends meet
10:33because the government just raised my children's university tuitions,
10:36will increase my bus costs, already increase my train tickets, so working isn't enough anymore.
10:41And I am very angry about our children's future. I support them 100%. Their future is at stake and that's
10:47incredibly important.
10:52You can feel the social tension, you can feel anger starting to simmer everywhere. The education system is being dismantled
10:59and when young people want to speak out, no one listens to them, it is directly police repression.
11:04So the situation is extremely tense. I don't think I've ever been this anxious about all the measures that make
11:09my daily life difficult.
11:14Meanwhile, in the Spanish city of Valencia, an anti-fascist movement and housing unions organised a peaceful rally in the
11:22city hall square.
11:23Participants erected a memorial in honour of Marie Carmen Abascal, the 87-year-old retired woman who died two weeks
11:30after being evicted from the apartment where she had lived for seven years in Madrid.
11:35These events are unfolding amid the political tension that led Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to call for early elections
11:44on November 29th,
11:46after the Conservative opposition and the far-right in Parliament rejected two government decrees that provided greater protection for vulnerable
11:54tenants against eviction.
12:04Protesters clashed with police in New York City as well after federal immigration agents shot and wounded a Dominican man
12:12during a deportation raid in northern Manhattan.
12:15Local authorities confirmed the agent fired into a vehicle while a five-year-old child was inside, sparking immediate public
12:23outrage over the fatal risks of federal enforcement tactics.
12:27Community members and municipal officials condemned the violence, demanding an immediate halt to aggressive federal run-ups that endangered immigrant
12:38working-class communities.
12:39Social media footage revealed the heavily armed ICE officers surrounding the scene as local residents pledged to continuous mobilisation against
12:48systemic state violence and migrant repression.
12:59And in this context, the New York Major Saram Mamdani called for abolition of ICE.
13:05We know, and I have said this directly, whether to the president or to the public, ICE undermines public safety.
13:13It makes us less safe. New York City will not stand by while ICE agents shoot New Yorkers.
13:21And we will not back down from the demand that so many, including myself, have put forward time and again.
13:28This is an agency that must be abolished.
13:31And I've shared that with the president. I've shared that with the secretary.
13:34This city wants ICE out. We want ICE out of our city, ICE out of our schools, ICE out of
13:41our hospitals, ICE out of our streets, ICE away from our kids.
13:45We want that because we want to keep the city safe.
13:48We do not need them to do so. All they do is terrorise the city.
13:51We want to keep the city safe.
14:03Following the MOT slide in Santiago de Chile,
14:06dozens of people affected denounced the lack of support from José Antonio Casas' government in addressing the emergency.
14:13The executive branch provided immediate aid to the Las Condes district,
14:17prompted by the fact that several ministers reside there while impoverished areas on the outskirts of Santiago de Chile are
14:25in need of national government assistance.
14:28At least 642 families were evacuated by the municipality and the Carabineros police force to be relocated to a camp
14:36outside the Chilean capital.
14:38Furthermore, there is condemnation regarding how real estate development has damaged the vegetation cover
14:44that acts as a natural barrier, triggering mudslides during heavy rains.
14:50During the emergency, at least six people were seriously injured while a child, barely a year old, suffered multiple fractures.
15:07Meanwhile, in Italy, a tornado swept through the city of Marsala in western Sicily on Friday morning,
15:13injuring several people and causing extensive damage to buildings and vehicles.
15:18Intense winds flipped multiple vehicles and caused structural damage to residential and commercial buildings across Marsala.
15:25In this context, local authorities reported that several individuals sustained injuries,
15:31although the full extent of the casualties and property damage has not yet been officially specified.
15:36The tornado formed as a system of severe thunderstorms moved across the island of Sicily on Friday morning.
15:44Weather conditions have since eased on the island,
15:48but meteorologists forecast continued storm activity across other parts of the central Mediterranean region.
16:02In other information, on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navy
16:10Pillai
16:11in recognition of her unwavering dedication to international law and the promotion of human rights.
16:17From defending anti-Aberhaid fighters alongside Nelson Mandela to serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights,
16:26Pillai has spent decades holding powerful states and leaders accountable.
16:30The Norwegian Novel Committee emphasized that her recognition comes at a critical moment
16:36when international law is under immense pressure from imperialist power politics.
16:42Pillai's lifetime of work stands as a symbol of hope for victims of state violence and struggles for justice.
16:54And now we have a second soul break coming up, don't go away, because we'll be right back.
17:18Welcome back to From the South, and let's go to Brazil, where students are holding protests to oppose the rise
17:24of the far right in Rio de Janeiro.
17:26Young people marched this Thursday through the streets of the city's northern district to engage with the public.
17:32Details in the following work by Andre Vieira and Sebastián Soto.
17:41Once again, class was held in the streets.
17:43For the fourth day in a row since the first round of elections in Brazil, students in Rio de Janeiro
17:49took to the streets.
17:50This Thursday, they marched through the Villa Isabel neighborhood to express their support for the re-election of president and
17:57candidate Lula da Silva.
18:01Brazilian universities took to the streets because we know what the Bolsonaro administration meant for Brazilian education.
18:06We know the damage caused by the administrations of Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro.
18:15Because most of the people are poor, most of the people are black, and most of the people are women.
18:22Bolsonarism is directly against all of these people, women, black people, and LGBT plus people.
18:29So taking to the streets is a way of showing that Bolsonaro and the far right won't win so easily.
18:38This Thursday's march set out from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and made its way through the neighborhood
18:44to engage with residents, especially those who did not vote in the first round.
18:49Across the country, more than 33 million voters did not turn out to vote on October 4th.
18:56The importance of this youth revolution is to raise awareness among older people, to make them understand that Flavio Bolsonaro
19:03is no good, and that, if we don't fight for this, we'll face a new dictatorship.
19:10The student protest movement, which has taken to the streets in all five regions of the country, is protesting, for
19:18example, the education cuts implemented during the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, father of candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.
19:26In 2022 alone, the last year of the far right administration, nearly 650 million U.S. dollars were cut from
19:34the Ministry of Education's budget.
19:37We are the ones who are losing our rights today. Our universities are being burned down, and we have to
19:45be here, in the streets, fighting for this, fighting for President Lula, who has done so much for us.
19:51And we have to be here alongside all these people from the university, all of us here protesting so that
19:56these fascists don't take power.
20:01Young people also marched in support of the bill submitted to Congress by President Lula's administration, which guarantees at least
20:09two days of rest per week for workers and puts an end to the six-day workweek followed by one
20:14day of rest.
20:19Workers already contribute a lot to society. A five-day workweek with two days off is the minimum they should
20:25have in terms of quality of life and even the opportunity to participate in politics.
20:29Therefore, I believe that the end of the six-day workweek with one day off is a matter of civilization
20:34or barbarism.
20:35It is the absolute minimum in a society where profit is valued more than life. And I choose that life
20:41is worth more than anything else, that there is life beyond work.
20:48Until October 25, when the second round is scheduled, young people vow to take to the streets and social media
20:54to reverse the result of the first round, which placed the far right in the lead.
21:07And now we go to Ecuador, where trade unions and students took to the streets of Quito to demand radical
21:13social changes and protests against President Lula Novo as neoliberal austerity.
21:17Led by the workers' unitary fund and student organizations, hundreds marched to condemn severe medicine shortages, soaring cost of living
21:26and energy cuts impacting production.
21:30Demonstrators burned an effigy of Novoa near the government balance, denouncing the administration's refusal to dialogue and its attack on
21:40labour rights.
21:41Social leaders are now calling on indigenous and farmers' movements to unite in a national mobilization against neoliberal policies and
21:51political repression.
21:59Employment is a cause for concern among Ecuadorians. Only three out of every ten Ecuadorians are employed.
22:0660% of Ecuadorians work in the informal sector under precarious conditions.
22:11We're taking to the streets to protest the crisis the country is facing under Daniel Novoa's government.
22:17As young people, we're facing job insecurity. Our parents' salaries aren't enough to make ends meet.
22:22There are no medicines in the hospitals, and there's none of the security they've promised us so often with their
22:28so-called Phoenix Plan.
22:29So young people, retirees, and workers are taking to the streets to fight for a dignified life.
22:35And from Ecuador, we go to Venezuela, where Acting President Del C. Rodriguez led the opening of the 82nd Fede
22:41Cámara's annual assembly in Caracas on Thursday,
22:45highlighting the country's economic growth these last years.
22:48During the event, Rodriguez highlighted Venezuela's ongoing economic performance, citing 22 consecutive quarters of growth,
22:55raising the joint efforts between the private and public sectors, pointing to ECLAC projections that positions the country at the
23:04forefront of regional growth in Latin America.
23:06She credited the resilience of the private sector amidst external financial restrictions.
23:12The Acting President also expressed gratitude to business representatives for their immediate response following the June 24th seismic events,
23:22noting that third-quarter growth projections remain above 6.5%.
23:35And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
