00:54Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:56I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:59We begin with the news, so stay with us.
01:16Russian President Vladimir Putin joined heads of states from the Commonwealth of Independent
01:21States in Turkmenistan for a high-level summit in Havasa.
01:25Marking 35 years since its founding, the regional bloc convened to strengthen Russian economic
01:30cooperation, trade, integration and sovereign political ties.
01:35High on the summit agenda were pressing environmental challenges in the Caspian Sea Basin with member
01:41states pledging joint ecological preservation and resource defense.
01:45The gathering underscores ongoing efforts across Russia to consolidate multilateral partnerships,
01:53foster sustainable development and resist external geopolitical pressures.
02:03In this context, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that trade between Russia
02:08and the Commonwealth of Independent States exceeded 110 billion US dollars in 2025 and has continued
02:15to grow this year.
02:17He noted that the organization could achieve even greater success by removing trade barriers.
02:22Putin also emphasized that CIS member states unanimously supported the creation of a just, multi-polar
02:30world order based on universally recognized principles of international law and the central
02:35role of the United Nations.
02:37In the summit, the President also addressed the critical environmental crisis and the declining
02:43water levels in the Caspian Sea.
02:53Also during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Chinese diplomats issued statements criticizing
03:00the nuclear and military policies of the United States and Japan.
03:04Speaking at the Disarmament and International Security Committee, Chinese official Sun Xiaobo stated
03:10that the United States extended deterrence policies affect global strategic stability.
03:16In this context, Sun also addressed Japan calling on the country to abandon remilitarization, maintain
03:23its three non-nuclear principles and adhere to international non-proliferation agreements.
03:29Additionally, the Chinese delegation exercised its right of reply pointing to Japan's expanding
03:37defense spending and weapon exports as factors impacting regional security.
04:04In Yemen, Saudi airstrikes targeting civilian transport and vital public infrastructure have killed
04:11at least three people and wounded 13 others across multiple provinces.
04:16The attacks hit a public transport bus carrying medical patients in Thais on targeted fuel stations
04:24in Damar, alongside critical telecommunication towers in IBB and also Hodeidah Airport.
04:30Germany military officials reported nearly 1,900 Saudi strikes across 11 provinces.
04:36Human rights bodies condemned the escalation, accusing Riyad of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to cut off emergency medical aid and
04:47isolate Yemen communities.
04:56A woman and a child were killed in an easterly strike on a residential building in Gaza City's Al Sabra
05:03neighborhood nearly a year into a ceasefire.
05:06Footage filmed on Friday shows relatives grieving over the dead and gathering for funeral prayers.
05:13The family recalled being sitting safely in their homes when suddenly they received a phone call telling them to evacuate.
05:20Within seconds the strike hit while they were still at the front door.
05:26The latest killings come three years after the Gaza war began in October 2023.
05:33Despite a ceasefire taking effect in October 2025, Israeli strikes and gunfire have continued across the end cliff, leaving at
05:41least 1,400 people dead and 5,000 injured since October 2025 ceasefire agreement.
05:52And now we have a short break coming up.
05:54But first remember, you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English where you'll find news in different formats, news
06:00updates and much more.
06:02We'll be right back so stay with us.
06:21Welcome back to From the South.
06:23In Belgium, labour unions have taken to the streets of Brussels to oppose Prime Minister Bart de Weber's austerity policies.
06:30Thousands of workers flooded the capital to challenge severe budget cuts and defend public services, wages and social welfare programs.
06:40The union led mobilization comes amid heightened social tensions and recent student protests, creating a united front against right wing
06:48economic measures.
06:49Social leaders vowed to maintain momentum, condemning European austerity mandates that forced working class families to bear the cost of
06:58economic crisis.
07:06I am a citizen, a mother and a worker who is angry.
07:09I work, but I cannot make ends meet because the government just raised my children's university tuitions, will increase my
07:15bus costs, already increase my train tickets, so working isn't enough anymore.
07:20And I am very angry about our children's future. I support them 100%. Their future is at stake and that's
07:26incredibly important.
07:31You can feel the social tension. You can feel anger starting to simmer everywhere.
07:35The education system is being dismantled. And when young people want to speak out, no one listens to them. It
07:41is directly police repression.
07:43So the situation is extremely tense. I don't think I've ever been this anxious about all the measures that make
07:48my daily life difficult.
07:53And protesters also clashed with police in New York City after federal immigration agents shot and wounded a Dominican man
08:00during a deportation raid in northern Manhattan.
08:03Local authorities confirmed the agent fired into a vehicle while a five-year-old child was inside, sparking immediate public
08:11outrage over the fatal risks of federal enforcement tactics.
08:15Community members and municipal officials condemned the violence, demanding an immediate halt to aggressive federal round-ups that endanger immigrant
08:25working-class communities.
08:27Social media footage revealed heavily armed eyes officers surrounding the scene as local residents pledged continuous mobilization against systemic state
08:36violence and migrant repression.
08:45For his part, New York Major Sarah Mamdani called for abolition of ICE.
08:51We know, and I have said this directly, whether to the president or to the public, ICE undermines public safety.
08:59It makes us less safe. New York City will not stand by while ICE agents shoot New Yorkers.
09:07And we will not back down from the demand that so many, including myself, have put forward time and again.
09:13This is an agency that must be abolished.
09:17And I've shared that with the president. I've shared that with the secretary.
09:20This city wants ICE out.
09:23We want ICE out of our city, ICE out of our schools, ICE out of our hospitals, ICE out of
09:28our streets, ICE away from our kids.
09:30We want that because we want to keep the city safe. We do not need them to do so. All
09:35they do is terrorize the city.
09:50Schools across Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia's southern Johor state have been forced to close a severe toxic haze blanket urban
09:58centers across Southeast Asia.
10:01Intensified by the El Niño weather pattern and prolonged drought, agricultural forest fires in Indonesia's Kalimantan and Sumatra have unleashed
10:10the toxic smoke across the region.
10:12Satellite data detected over 2,400 hotspots in central Kalimantan alone, destroying thousands of hectares on the shared island of
10:22Borneo.
10:23Neighboring nations, including the Philippines, continue to face critical air pollution, sparking urgent calls for coordinated regional action against climate
10:32-driven environmental disasters.
10:41In Italy, a tornado swept through the city of Marsala in western Sicily on Friday morning, injuring several people and
10:48causing extensive damage to buildings and vehicles.
10:51Intense winds flipped multiple vehicles and caused structural damage to residential and commercial buildings across Marsala.
10:58In this context, local authorities reported that several individuals sustained injuries, although the full extent of the casualties and property
11:07damage has not yet been officially specified.
11:10The tornado formed as a system of severe thunderstorms moved across the island of Sicily on Friday morning.
11:17Weather conditions have since eased on the island, but meteorologists forecast continued storm activity across other parts of the central
11:26Mediterranean region.
11:35In other topics, on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi
11:43Pillai in recognition of her unwavering dedication to international law and the promotion of human rights.
11:50From defending anti-war fighters alongside Nelson Mandela to serving as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Pillai has
12:00spent decades holding powerful states and leaders accountable.
12:04The Norwegian Nobel Committee emphasized that her recognition comes at a critical moment when international law is under immense pressure
12:13from imperialist power politics.
12:15Pillai's lifetime of work stands as a symbol of hope for victims of state violence and struggles for justice.

13:09Welcome back to From the South. In Brazil, students are holding protests to oppose the rise of the far-right
13:15in Europe.
13:16In Rio de Janeiro, young people marched this Thursday through the streets of the city's northern district to engage with
13:22the public.
13:22Details in the following work by Andre Vieira and Sebastián Soto.
13:30Once again, class was held in the streets. For the fourth day in a row since the first round of
13:36elections in Brazil, students in Rio de Janeiro took to the streets.
13:39This Thursday, they marched through the Villa Isabel neighborhood to express their support for the re-election of president and
13:46candidate Lula da Silva.
13:50Brazilian universities took to the streets because we know what the Bolsonaro administration meant for Brazilian education.
13:56We know the damage caused by the administrations of Michel Temer and Jair Bolsonaro.
14:05Because most of the people are poor, most of the people are black, and most of the people are women.
14:11Bolsonarism is directly against all of these people, women, black people, and LGBT plus people.
14:18So, taking to the streets is a way of showing that Bolsonaro and the far-right won't win so easily.
14:27This Thursday's march set out from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and made its way through the neighborhood
14:33to engage with residents, especially those who did not vote in the first round.
14:38Across the country, more than 33 million voters did not turn out to vote on October 4th.
14:46The importance of this youth revolution is to raise awareness among older people, to make them understand that Flavio Bolsonaro
14:53is no good, and that, if we don't fight for this, we'll face a new dictatorship.
15:00The student protest movement, which has taken to the streets in all five regions of the country, is protesting, for
15:07example, the education cuts implemented during the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, father of candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.
15:15In 2022 alone, the last year of the far-right administration, nearly 650 million U.S. dollars were cut from
15:23the Ministry of Education's budget.
15:26We are the ones who are losing our rights today. Our universities are being burned down, and we have to
15:34be here, in the streets, fighting for this, fighting for President Lula, who has done so much for us.
15:40And we have to be here alongside all these people from the university, all of us here protesting so that
15:45these fascists don't take power.
15:51Young people also marched in support of the bill submitted to Congress by President Lula's administration, which guarantees at least
15:58two days of rest per week for workers and puts an end to the six-day workweek followed by one
16:03day of rest.
16:09Workers already contribute a lot to society. A five-day workweek with two days off is the minimum they should
16:14have in terms of quality of life and even the opportunity to participate in politics.
16:18Therefore, I believe that the end of the six-day workweek with one day off is a matter of civilization
16:23or barbarism.
16:24It is the absolute minimum in a society where profit is valued more than life. And I choose that life
16:30is worth more than anything else, that there is life beyond work.
16:37Until October 25, when the second round is scheduled, young people vowed to take to the streets and social media
16:44to reverse the result of the first round, which placed the far right in the lead.
16:56Now we go to Ecuador as trade unions and students took to the streets of Quito to demand radical social
17:02changes and protests against President Daniel Novoa's neoliberal austerity.
17:06Led by the workers' unitary front and student organizations, hundreds marched to condemn severe medicine shortages, soaring costs of living
17:16and energy cuts impacting production.
17:19Demonstrators burned an effigy of Novoa near the government palace, denouncing the administration's refusal to dialogue and its attack on
17:30labour rights.
17:30Social leaders are now calling on indigenous and farmer movements to unite in a national mobilization against neoliberal policies and
17:39political repression.
17:48In other information, Venezuelan Acting President Delsi Rodriguez led the opening of the 82nd Fede Camera's annual assembly in Caracas
17:57on Thursday, highlighting the country's economic growth these last years.
18:00During the event, Rodriguez highlighted Venezuela's ongoing economic performance, citing 22 consecutive quarters of growth,
18:09pricing the joint efforts between the private and public sectors, pointing to ECLAG projections that positioned the country at the
18:18forefront of regional growth in Latin America.
18:21She credited the resilience of the private sector amidst external financial restrictions.
18:27The Acting President also expressed gratitude to business representatives for their immediate response following the June 24th seismic events, noting
18:36that third quarter growth projections remain above 6.5%.
18:49And with this information, we have come to the end of this news brief.
