00:00Let's fact check this.
00:01The priest has been given this sin name by the church and has the power to forgive sins.
00:06I want to be absolutely clear that the Catholic Church does not teach that priests forgive our sins.
00:13Only God forgives sins.
00:15So here you have two Catholic apologists saying two different things.
00:18In this video, Patrick, from the Bible in Context, brings up an apparent contradiction
00:23when playing these clips of Joe Hishmayer and Trent Horn.
00:27Now there's two problems associated with this.
00:29The first is not understanding what an instrumental cause is.
00:33The priest by himself doesn't have the power to cast out demons or to forgive sins.
00:38God is the efficient cause working through the priest.
00:41The second is that he plays Trent Horn out of context.
00:44Catholics believe that the priest doesn't forgive us, God does.
00:47But he works through the priest just like he works through the minister of baptism.
00:50And this is from the video that he clipped at the start titled,
00:53Three Reasons to Confess Your Sins to a Priest.
00:56I want to be absolutely clear that the Catholic Church does not teach that priests forgive our sins.
01:03Only God forgives sins.
01:05Paragraph 1441 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church says the following,
01:09Only God forgives sins.
01:11Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself,
01:15The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,
01:17and exercises this divine power.
01:20Your sins are forgiven.
01:22Further, by virtue of his divine authority,
01:24he gives this power to men to exercise in his name.
01:29So God forgives sins, but he does so through a minister of the church.
01:33Now it's clear that Patrick is pushing a false narrative here,
01:36and that these clips were used out of context.
01:39Only God truly knows his heart, and his intent here.
